It would almost be a sin for someone to duplicate Karen Carpenters sweet, basey, silky smooth, voice. With all due respect to her musical genius and talent, there was another vocalist that could almost cover Karen's songs, save for that she was playing hard rock, instead of soft rock. Heart's Ann Wilson's voice in this era was very dynamic and hand incredible range, too. Again, different genres of music, but I would still say Karen has a definite edge in base. Yet, Heart was playing to a different audience with different expectations.

@@michaelstancato6057 Hi Michael. I should have clarified more. It was my whole 6th grade class that sang with the Carpenters at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho where they put on a concert. We sang the chorus for Sing, Sing a song. We practiced for months with our grade school music teacher. It was so much fun. A month or so later we all received carpenters memorabilia from them which I still have today. That was 50 years ago! I’ve loved her ever since and my heart still aches that we don’t have more music from her. I can’t wait to meet her in heaven and listen to her singing music with her angelic voice!

Oh my. My favorite Carpenters song, with Karen at her peak, vocally. This remix with orchestra brought tears to my eyes. I think Richard was great, but let's keep the record straight this was was co-written by the immortal Leon Russell and Delaney Bramlett [Not Bonnie, Bonnie was locked out of the room when the two men wrote the song over a long afternoon]. The idea for a song about a Groupie chick was pitched by Bonnie Bramlett after getting the idea from Rita Coolidge, Leon's Girlfriend at the time. The Carpenters bought the song from Leon you might say and Bonnie did her own recording [watch it, it's sucked IMHO] spreading the rumor that she wrote it. BS. She never wrote a song in her entire career. Leon was a master of space and time, a journeyman, a maestro.

I knew many rockers who appreciated not only her vocal talents but her drum playing abilities as well. She could have held her own on a drum kit against the great ones. She simply had talent. I’m a 23 year old girl so I guess it’s a fair assumption that I love Lady Gaga or Katy Perry or her like. When I was growing up my father adored Karen. He said her voice was rich, like honey or chocolate. He gave me his Carpenters vinyl records which I couldn’t play then bought a vinyl record player off Ebay. Sadly my father passed a year ago but part of his enduring legacy is the love he inspired in his children, not only me but my brother, of the finest vocalist of modern times. She did sound like honey and chocolate and I adore her as much as my Dad did.

John Lennon once crossed paths with Karen Carpenter and reportedly said; “I want to tell you love, I think you’ve got a fabulous voice." That was an assessment many of us can agree with, and the fact that she and her brother covered "Help" and "Ticket to Ride" (both of which were primarily written by Lennon) may have also left him with a good impression.

@@MichaelGunner123 I think ..967 probably didn't realize you really didn't know the meaning of the term "covered," since it's so universally used in music. It is usually used when an artist performs a song that another artist is previously known for. It isn't as much used if an artist records something simply *written* by somebody else, but usually if someone repeats something that is kinda already known and associated with some other artist having recorded it. It is used as a verb: "The Carpenters covered 'Ticket to Ride'", as a noun: "I like the Carpenters' cover of The Beatles 'Help'", and as an adjective: "We're going to watch a Carpenters cover band tonight, but I can't imagine anybody coming close to Karen Carpenter's voice!"

On July 31st, 1976, I drove from DeKalb, IL to downtown Chicago to see the Carpenters at the Arie Crown theater at McCormick Place. I picked up a dozen red roses before leaving DeKalb (at "Glidden Campus Florist") and made the 70+ mile trip arriving in time to see their opening act walk on stage (George Goebel... he was funny, but I thought, "This is kind of a weird pairing!") The Carpenters were fantastic. Funny, personable, engaging. Richard was in top form. Of course, Karen's voice was magical. At the end of the show I walked as close to the stage as I could get to see if I could deliver the roses to her personally and security told me I couldn't. But, they did take the roses from me and assured me they would make certain she received them. I don't know if she did receive them (I like to think she did...) She was the best and her voice can still bring me to tears. (BTW, I took tons of pictures that night and still have the slides not more than 10 feet away from me 40+ years later.)

Duane, THANK YOU for sharing this wonderful memory! I never got to see the Carpenters live, though I have corresponded with Richard a couple of times since. Your thoughtfulness in taking those roses to Karen touches my heart tonight, and I think it's SO VERY IMPORTANT that Americans honor our musical artists whose creativity, talent, and hard work has bettered our lives, and that we do so while they are alive and here to receive our appreciation and to hear us say how much they mean to us. My own guess is that Karen indeed received the roses as you were told she would and, if you included a card as well, that she read it too. All the best-Don in Indiana

EVERY instrument and its expert handler in this production makes for an orchestral MASTERPIECE. The luscious, longing, seductive tone of the clarinet and the somber french horns (and other wind instruments) introduce, complement, and reinforce the entire mood; the rest of the equally brilliant musicians coalesce in creating a captivating, soaring, symphonic companion to Karen's pitch-perfect musical story-telling.
