Your words on snake enclosure security - amen. Escaped snakes just give snake haters more ammo. I like how you thought these things out before putting the snake in. (I know it comes with experience, but everyone can learn from videos like this.) I never thought of using vinyl flooring as spacers, I like that! I was using thin polyethylene strips in a similar application, which are great because they have so little friction, but they come off because even double-sided tape does not stick well to PE.
@AnimalsatHomePodcast

Yes, definitely gives them more ammo. Snakes are great at escaping haha I always encourage newbies to err on the side of being over secure as they are usually surprised at what a snake is capable of squeezing out of! Thanks for watching! 👍🏼

I use a soldering iron to make the holes in the tub, which makes smooth holes the snake can't scratch themselves on.

they also love paper towel or toilet paper rolls that have been sterilised. Mine at now 2 and still have some paper towel rolls in with them because they love them so much, even though they only just fit through them.

Yep the soldering iron method definitely works as well! I actually going to use paper towel rolls as well but I decided to go with something that I could rinse off. Thanks for watching! Glad to her you have jungles too!

This is not a good way of doing it: it creates toxic fumes, and doesn’t make a clean hole. Get yourself a stepper drill bit. You can then drill holes of exacrly the size you want, with super clean edges.

Great video! How long would you recommend using a small enclosure until upgrading to a larger size?
@AnimalsatHomePodcast
@AnimalsatHomePodcast 4 года назад
Thanks for watching! I would only use a small enclosure, until you’re finished Quarantine. So as long as you’ve had the animal for at least 2-3 months and it’s eating well and seems healthy, I wouldn’t hesitate to upgrade it to it’s full sized enclosure (regardless of the size of the animal). Why did you choose to not use the awesome lid that came with the tub? It seemed unnecessarily complicated trying to set up a makeshift rack for a single snake, getting the height just right and all that.
@AnimalsatHomePodcast

Good question! I’m not sure actually... I think there was a reason… But it was so long ago now I can’t remember why 🤔

1 1/2 yr old gator usually stays in water do i need to quarintine baby snake tht im about to order...or just keep the 🐍 across the room?
@AnimalsatHomePodcast
@AnimalsatHomePodcast 4 года назад
It’s always a good idea if you can use separate rooms, however keeping them across the room from each other, keeping any tools separate, and washing hands between handling would probably be OK. I can’t think of too many pathogen’s that can cross between a snake and a gator.

@MASTURBIKER
@MASTURBIKER 3 года назад
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast wow, I paid $295 for mine here in Australia (I don't know what that is in your money, probably around $350?) but I guess it comes down to supply and demand, there would be a much bigger market there considering the population of New York is almost the population of the whole of Australia.....lol
@AnimalsatHomePodcast
@AnimalsatHomePodcast 3 года назад
Actually, I’m Canadian! So the Canadian and the Aussie dollar are quite similar. But yeah, every market seems to be a little bit different. Things are definitely WAY cheaper in the states, you could probably get a Carpet python for until $100 there

So would I would need a quarantine tub for a new snake even if it's my only reptile?
@AnimalsatHomePodcast
@AnimalsatHomePodcast 5 лет назад
Nope! Although sometimes it’s nice to keep a new animal in a simpler setup until they are settled in so you can monitor them a little closer but definitely not necessary.
@SerpentKeeper
@SerpentKeeper 5 лет назад
In that case, a quarantine tub or tank makes sense to provide your setup of parasites etc which can impact your substrate and other decoration stuff. If you realize that your animal was not “safe” after you put it in it’s cage, you have to change or sterilize the whole cage and setup. So you can prevent this with quarantine...
@AnimalsatHomePodcast
@AnimalsatHomePodcast 5 лет назад
Agreed!
@johnschlesinger2009

Just a note about one comment someone left, recommending using a soldering iron to make air holes in rubs. This is a very bad practice! The heated plastic releases bisphenol A fumes, which are highly toxic. The best tool is a suitably sized stepper drill bit. Because it is stepped, each hole can be of identical size, without sharp edges, and there will never be cracks innthe plastic.
@AnimalsatHomePodcast
@AnimalsatHomePodcast 5 лет назад
Yes, good call! I used the soldering iron method once several years ago and was pretty blown away at the volume of fumes it creates and never did it again! Some say as long as you're in a well-ventilated area or outside it is okay but I'm with you... drilling is by far the superior method. I need to pick myself up some stepped its though, that would make things even easier!

Sorry but even for a small snake a quarantine tub imo should never be smaller than 2.5 the length of the snake. Tom Crutchfield is the guru on reptiles and that is his standard for all of his reptiles.
