Carrier Package Unit Ignition Failure Dirty Crossover Tubes EP168

Go a no heat call for this Carrier package unit. Found a failed ignition error code on this guy. I reset the unit pulled apart the burner assembly and cleaned it. Found some dirty crossover tubes on the in shot burners.

Hey bud, Good job. As a retired Carrier service manager, may I offer this advice: The cross over tubes should have an opening equivalent to the thickness of a dime. Easy gauge to use. Also when cleanings flame sensor please nerve use anything really abrasive. A dollar bill works fine. The sanding causes groove which get dirty faster than previously. Thanks for your always great work.

This is good maintenance, but it is a little bit rare for the maintenance you just did such a great job with to have been the fix for a failure in one of these units. Most likely, an ignition lockout is going to result in replacing the board, and you can find that out very quickly once you've ascertained that code and cycled power. You will find that either the board needs to be replaced because of no spark, or the board is sending voltage to the gas valve but the gas valve isn't opening. The other potential failure is the inducer itself is suffering from a bad motor, or on those older units, he Hall switch at the back of the motor has failed. One of the commenters suggested using a dollar bill for the electrodes, and I have cleaned electrodes using both methods, and I've never had to come back after using a sandcloth. Since I tend to service the same units for 5 to 10 years at a time, I would have discovered if using the sand cloth was a bad idea..

I need some advice if you could give a opinion on. I finished HVAC school and have 1.5 years of residential service. I want to get into commercial and no one will hire me. Should I get into commercial install to get into commercial faster or should I continue to grow my experience in residential service ?

I worked in residential for 10 years before I switched to commercial. We have some techs that started with no experience too. You just got to learn as much as you can and keep applying.
