In this video, I attempt to paint one of the alloy wheels with no prior experience, only access to Halfords, B&Q and the internet.
This is NOT a how-to video. It's just me sharing my experience of doing this with you.
BE SURE TO WATCH PART 2 - I repaint the wheel for a much better finish!

Just to be clear, this is NOT a How To video and I am NOT a professional. This video is about me sharing my experience of doing this for the first time 😊 Watch me finish this in PART 2 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rS2m9vCgZy8.html

The idiots that down voted this will make the same mistakes and not learn from your experiences. Thanks for posting this. Life is a learning process.

Out of all the videos I've watched tonight, this is the one I should have watched first - it's made me realise what a mammoth task I have ahead of me and how little I knew! I'm sure you won't take offence at me but watching someone do it and it not turning out well is more educational than watching all the know-it-alls - thanks for sharing!

Looks like it was sanded with a hedgehog! you needs to spend a lot more time on prep before you paint!

+matt goodall Yeah, if the prep was better, the finish would have been much smoother

Hold on.. aren't you ment to wrap sandpaper around the sander block then sand.. not sand with the block.. no wonder you struggled 🤣😀 good video anyways

Respect, John. Others can learn from seeing how much prep is really needed, as much as from seeing a pro do a perfect job. You said yourself you could have re-tried but the car didn't warrant it. I try to park well way away from kerbs. Nearly cried when I saw a lady this week scrape _both_ nearside ali wheels along the pavement (2016 car). Loud graunching noise-ouch!-but she got out and seemed unaware.

Thanks! I'm glad you understood the purpose of the video. I felt it would be a good idea to show people how to avoid making the same mistake as I did. I know what you mean! It's painful to see new or expensive alloys scratched up.

You identified what you did wrong when you did something wrong and from it you've learned. Trial and error is the best way to learn anything and I respect you for uploading this and pointing out what not to do haha. All these people hating drive their parent's car and any damage is paid for with daddys money lol, Awesome video man, I learned from this and am now pretty much ready to do mine :D

Thank you for your experience. I haven't driven in 3 years since I passes my driving test. Finally got my car and started to practice. One thing I noticed when I came back was scratches on my rim and I can't even remember if it was there before. I think I must of scratched it when I was parking. Bummed out since they were new rims. I seen some of ChrisFix video and planning to do the rims. Not now since it's winter, rather wait till Jan to do it but in the mean time, learning how to do it properly. I glad I watched you video and nice insight. Professional makes it so easy but I think this is a valuable experience to have. The material doesn't cost much, only your time but if you learn this skill, then you can carry it with you. It cost in the hundreds to get it done by a professional. Anyway, question, how did you decide your alloy color, I was thinking of going to Halfords and buy the paid from there or did you buy from a garage?
@johnomi
@johnomi 6 лет назад
Thanks! I just picked up a can from Halfords but the colour match was slightly different from the rest of the wheels. I think I’ll get colour matched paint when I do this again.

This was a good honest video for a first time try at repairing curb rash. Looks like more filler and then sanding with some glazing putty for the pin holes in the filler. Nice try though.

Yeah ok well...i gave it a thumbs up. I also tried to remove some rust on my car last year, sanding down, putting on rust remover, filler, base code and clear code and it came out shit but not as bad as looked like with the rust. The rust was gone, that counted for me so yeah, its cool if you try those things on your own, you save money and you'll get better and better...DIY repairs are not known for replacing the work of professionals but at least some money can be saved until you can pay a professional for the job

What can I say, you should have used a lot more of sanding paper to make it more smooth...
@kubolos13

Be much easy if you use grinder instead off sanding block. Should spend more on prep wheel mate.
@nickh2001

you needed to sand more then sand with fine and use spay filler,wet n dry it.well thats my guess lol.

Degrease than sand! You risk driving crap into the surface to haunt you later. Before painting use a prepaint wash.. not a degreaser which is common but wrong.

More effort in the sanding and it would’ve come out a lot better the first time round. In Part 2 I sanded it down again by and it it looked much better. Electric may be the way to go

Not sure what to say about this..well done for trying but i think its fair to say the end result is somewhat of a disaster. can i give you some advice, alloy wheel refurbishment is about patience and attention to detail and quality products. Its often more cost effective to replace the rim.
@johnomi
@johnomi 7 лет назад
+Ian Mines Agreed, i got a much better result in when I redid it in part 2. In this case, replacing the wheel is cheaper.

You do need to spend a lot more time on your prep work but for DIY work it could be a lot worse.
@johnomi

Yeah it was the prep that let me down first time round

Its a learning process and you only make the big mistakes once. Its more important imo that people actually take an interest in looking after their vehicles etc :)

@BR0KEdownUNDER 6 лет назад
Also important that people can see others make honest mistakes as it helps them. A lot of people would've just taken the video down and re-done it after being told "Looks like it was sanded with a hedgehog".
