most modern vehicles have a calculated set time that emissions related faults will be triggered for replacement including the DPF, Catalytic Converter, Etc
often this is not true as they are working fine.

Think of the environmental cost of replacing DPFs early and think of the environmental impact of scrapping this car early due to anticipated costs to repair! This is criminal.

History repeating. A similar thing happened in the late 70s. When O2 Sensors and Catalytic Converters first appeared, the recommended replacement interval was 30,000 miles. It was several years before things changed.

@@WillMorgan89 Yes, you need to put it back before MOT. I guess problem is that the MOT is very expensive, ive seen prices range from $300 (aftermarket non brand) to $1800 (Audi original), and then you need someone to replace it for you, so labor is probably $5-600 atleast. So replacing a DPF on a car that is worth maybe $2500 does not seem that feasable option.

Well, at least the car can still be operated when the warning sign in that car comes up. Some car manufactures seem to have created a problem of the car failing to start intentionally, a serious problem that may cause someone to miss an important appointment or to be stranded in the middle of nowhere at any time. Not even a jumpstart battery can help. Only a tow truck can help if you don't know how to fix the problem yourself. Here is one example: Google: Nissan Sentra Cars Recalled For Faulty Brake Light Switches The stop lamp switch on some 2016-2019 Sentra vehicles may become contaminated with silicon off-gassing from silicon-based grease used in surrounding components in close proximity. Oxidation may occur at the switch contact surface due to electric arcing, resulting in silicon dioxide build-up When the brake light switch (also called brake pedal switch) stops working, the car does not allow the brake to be pressed down for starting the car, so the car won't start even though the battery is fine. The grease in the brake light switch is absolutely not necessary because the copper contacts are not constantly in friction but only from time to time and the friction is not high enough to wear out the contacts within the lifespan of any vehicle. Moreover, that problem was found to have existed as early as 2004. So for the 2016-2019 models to have the same problem that can be eliminated just by not putting grease on the contacts, it seems the problem was intentionally created or at least intentionally ignored by the manufacturer. In fact the ungreased sliding contacts should have better electrical contact than the greased ones because the occasional sliding contact can polish the contacting surfaces to keep them oxidation free. I was fortunate that my Nissan Sentra 2007 failed to start while it was parking in the garage of my home, so I could check out some DIY RU-vid videos and have problematic grease in the switch removed. Video: Nissan brake pedal switch replacement (not starting fix But the problem did not just stopped there. Seems like my car was programmed not to be able to start for about 24 hours after the brake light switch was removed and put back on unless the program is overridden because I wasn't able to start my car right after the grease-free switch was put back on. When a tow truck came to my home the next day to tow it to the dealership, I was surprised that the tow truck guy could start my car right away and said there was nothing wrong with my car. Since the problematic grease in the brake light switch was removed about a year ago, the fail-to-start problem has never occurred again. Even if I am going to buy a new brake light switch, I'm going to remove the problematic grease before installing it to avoid having the same problem again. Note: The above is my personal experience only. It should not be construed as my advice on how to solve problems in your vehicle.

The same thing happened in Virginia, USA around 2002. The dealer had a chip they could swap into the car's system that would induce a fault after a set period of time. A guy who builds his own computers pulled the chips and read the code on them with a chip reader. When he found the suicide code, he called the police and they set a trap. They arrested the mechanic and the dealership threw him under the bus to save themselves. Eventually, they busted the entire dealership.

I've discussed this with the channel owner and suggested that if he has proof, then he should approach lawyers who will make him rich. I doubt whether he has because his evidence is anecdotal. I do similar work and when I see repeated failures put it down to substandard components or poor design. Peugeot/Citroen have massive problems with Adblue tanks not holding pressure, or pump failure and ithe Adblue injector leaking which blocks the SEC cat. That's not pre-planned obsolescence, just crap parts fitted year back that are failing well beyond they expected life span. Volvo are also having the same problem with the injector leaking but it's much rarer with other vehicles. Land Rover products are just crap in general and use the worst 2.0 diesel engine that's used across the entire range but again when they fail, its poor design. Negligence rather than obsolescence. The end result is the same, expensive repairs are needed but there's no need to invent conspiracy theories. If there are lines of code buried in the software, someone would have found them. Not with the equipment shown, or by anyone in a garage environment, but by a real nerd able to access the source code and understand it. Where you will increasingly find vehicles having to be scrapped long before time, is with EVs where high component costs will render repairs unviable. I've already seen several seen several Renault Zoes that have had £7000 repair bills that are more than the cars are worth, Those owner's had usable, tradeable cars one day that became worth nothing instantly.

Planned obsolescence is completely legal, and most of the semi-official monopolies/guilds/cartels are doing it for like hundred years now, as industry standard. Things are made to break down in the shortest term possible. People who don't do that just can't compete cause if you make product that lasts 2 years you make 5 times as much money as if you make product that lasts say 10 years. So you can only get good stuff as a custom order by paying many times the market price, if its option at all. Great video!! Now we just need to get this info, and a method for them to reset/refresh/unclog their big rig DPF units, to all the poor truck drivers here in the US so they can take care of their own DPF systems when they 'fail'...On this side of the pond there's a pandemic of diesel trucks that suddenly go into limp mode and require weeks of downtime to get parts to replace their 'faulty' DPF systems. It's costing truckers thousands extra per year and driving up the freight costs something fierce!!! Meanwhile, doing a little math regarding that strange number - 49336000... I noticed your machine was in metric...And I also noticed the measurement displayed on your scanner was 'm' which usually means meters... So that translates to 49,336 Km...Add that to the current 120,771km and you get 170,107... How much do you want to bet the next time that fault code comes up it'll be right at 170,000km????? For us imperial measurements folks, 120,000km is 74,564 Miles (About 15,000 miles after almost all US OEM warranties expire...), and 170,000 km is 105,633 miles - right about the mileage where American car companies like to call a car 'end of life', all manufacturer extended warranties tend to expire, and the point where a car's value drops like the anchor of an oil tanker... Coincidence???? I think not!!!

The code setting for dpf replacement does not illuminate the engine light, at our workshop we also tell the car it had a new filter if the pressure is good, but eventually the fault will come back soon or later. Interesting. I have a Ford Fiesta with the same 1.6 diesel engine, bought at 6 years old and 73k miles. It was never able to complete regeneration of the DPF and suffered with limping during such regeneration attempts. A specialist advised that the core of the DPF had completely collapsed under the weight of oil - and they only ever dealt with DPF-equipped cars (never a non-DPF car), which meant that their be-all-and-end-all solution was DPF deletion. The car has run faultlessly ever since.

In the USA Fault codes Refer to a specific error but never specifically state a part has to be replaced by code description. Codes are set when specific operating parameters are met. The reasoning for the conditions to be met to set a code are never specific mileage but a actual fault. Faults can be inferred by specific sensor readings such as coolant temp high but actual failure causing the readings must be determined by diagnosis. Coolant temp high could be caused by a failed sensor, sensor wiring, or temp may actually be high for untold number of mechanical reasons. For a manufacture to require or by inference require replacement of a part not verified as faulty by diagnosis is fraud. If this is actually happening as you described it is grounds for a civil lawsuit. Once concern is the description for the code. Was the description created by the Scan tool manufacture or by the Vehicle manufacture. One issue here in the USA is different scan tools give different descriptions even on the same vehicle. Proper diagnostics must be performed as described for the specific code. Anything else is Fraud

Interesting to know when my Peugeot-Diesel-owning neighbours start asking me about this on their car 😅 Incidentally FAP is Filtre à particules (Particle Filter in French). As far as cleaning goes, I've found the only way to truly get the ash out (i.e. incombustible material that builds up over the life of the car versus soot, which can be burnt off in a regen) is to get it back-flushed, where they blast water and air through if for like an hour or so. There are companies that do if for around £200 if you take the DPF to them, definitely cheaper than a whole new DPF.

At around 110,000 miles, it did have an issue with the car trying to regen the DPF every 100 miles. It turns out the pressure hoses originally fitted to the DPF had a habit of burning up at that sort of milage. They cost about £80 to replace, and the car has been fine since and regenerates the DPF every 400-500 miles.

In fairness to PSA & Ford the real story is as follows. Normally a DPF will not burn off the soot fully until it reaches approximately 550-600 deg..C . This requires continuous main road driving and a choice of post injection, in exhaust injector or an in exhaust vaporiser to supply fuel vapour to the exhaust catalyst. Small light cars can find it particularly difficult to reach the required temperatures and DPF clogging due to soot accumulation can be a problem. Ford and PSA decided to adopt a different tack on the 1.5/1.6hdi range of engines and dose the fuel with small quantities of a Cerium catalyst so that the resulting soot is embedded with catalyst and can burn off at a lower temperature of about 460-520 deg.C . This has distinct advantages and failed regenerations are far less of a problem, in fact almost non existant. There is a downside however, and that is the accumulation of ash, mainly from the Cerium catalyst but also from small amounts of ash from the fuel and engine oil. This is not combustible and will never burn off even if the regeneration was at 1000 deg.C. Over time the DPF will build up an excessive accumulation of ash and the cars are programmed to alert the driver of this at about 150,000 KM . This ash can never be washed through with a cleaner as the ash particle size is larger than the DPF pore size , anyone who tells you otherwise is either a scam artist or an idiot. However this ash can be removed by removing the DPF, soaking in detergent and a surfactant that will soften the ash without damaging the catalyst. The ash can then be removed by reverse flushing the DPF with water. If done properly more than 95% of ash can be removed . This ash is reddish and very similar to rust in appearance . Once cleaned the DPF is refitted in the car and the system is reset as when installing a new DPF. Hope this helps. I have cleaned at least 500 of these catalysts with excellent results.

Interesting... I have a Volvo V50 with the same engine and apparently the DPF is supposed to be a 'service item' every 5 years or 60,000 miles. Last time mine was done it was £800-ish for a DPF replacement... Since then I had to have it cleaned once as a result of a broken boost pipe messing up the sensor readings, causing it to stop regenerating.
@Stoney3K
@Stoney3K Год назад
The broken boost pipe is a common problem. It will screw up the MAF air flow reading which causes an abnormally high (calculated) soot content in the DPF, even if the pressure isn't excessive, as well as a low boost fault, and that will inhibit regeneration. The bigger problem with the 1.6D (16 valve) engines is that the injector oil seals will start leaking over time, causing the engine to burn oil, and this will contaminate the DPF. The injectors as well as the seals *are* a service item.

I still do not understand 2 things. 1. How this procedure on the video can remove an unburnable material=cinder=ash (not soot burnable during regenerations) from the DPF with just flushing a chemical substance the same direction (not back-flush) as the exhaust gasses normally flow? 2. How is guaranteed that a wet, fragile material (Cordierite or Silicon Carbide) in the DPF does not crack when is heated by the engine again, because this is the exact thing the companies (doing back-flushing with drying) warn? I mean - I do not know, maybe these companies say it just for business, but is not there some logic in it? Because DPFs crack often and then the differential pressure sensor shows very low values and then it appears the DPF is clean, but is not, it is just cracked and leaks all the poisons out, and it can be indicates when the end exhaust pipe is black by full of soot.

This may be of interest to some . I have this last week being driving a brand new demonstrator , heavy truck . Now this is a merk 26 tonner , and in my opinion it will be scrap in 5-10 years . Technology gone mad is my only conclusion . All the major functions of the vehicle are controlled through one visual display unit , should this go down the truck is useless . It's perfectly normal for the truck diagnostic system to malfunction on a regular basis , don't forget these things are used 52 weeks a year , sometimes 24 hrs a day . The mirrors are by camera , and heavily affected by the weather , i couldn't believe this one . With the sun behind you're virtually blind , and there's no way to clear rain from the lens . Even the old mirrors were never affected so badly , but it gets worse , should a camera be damaged , the vehicle stops dead . And finally , an automatic braking system that's more likely to cause an accident than prevent one . The radar can see false images and slam the brakes on , without warning . Though it didn't apply the brakes , i did have audio warnings , of a couple of parked cars . The system cancelled before this actually happened , but i have had false warnings in the past as it picked up what i'm convinced was a shadow . There were no vehicles anywhere near me , and on one occasion where it shifted the load . Because a car was parked on the verge , on a corner , leaving the road totally clear .

Stop lying, automatic breaking doesn't use camera it uses radar it's impossible for it to pickup shadows... You get visual and sound warning if something is close it's super useful especially for trucks. Automatic breaking is last resort, it will only work if it knows your going to hit something and systems like that were perfected over years and work very well and save many people. No your truck doesn't stop if mirror camera fails, your mirror camera is placed in such way it will not rain on it and is illegal in most places so it's only addition or tech demo. While steering all options from one screen is problematic if it fails it's not needed for driving, car will work with it broken (new ram pickups have that issue). Most of the tech you mentioned is not as new as you think and almost never fails, points of failure remain the same as in old cars, low quality connectors in places where elements can reach them, wear and tear of unserviced cars, electrical gremlins that can happen even on old cars and obviously bad design.
@mickey1299
@mickey1299 9 месяцев назад
@@wykydytron Right well first off , do you actually drive a truck . Second i said radar , not camera . The shadow theory is all i can see that was activating the system . It was a motorway at 2200 hrs , and the road was almost empty . I've had other instances where the braking system has activated shifting the load for no actual safety reason . Thirdly the cameras are not placed where spray cannot affect them . That is an impossible task , otherwise they would have figured out a way of removing the wipers by now . Anyone with a reversing camera will tell you the same thing . I suggest you actually read a post , and understand what has been written , before picking up on something , and making yourself look like a complete idiot . @byteme9718 apple intentionally slows down old phones through updates. This, of course kind of forces you to buy a new one. Also think about the irreparability of said iphones. If you break it your better off buying a new one, if you try repairing it yourself with new parts or get it done by a uncertified repairer the phone is intentionally blocked from working order, not because it isn't compatible, just because it's blocked in the software.

I belive that certain manufacturers recommend dpf replacement at a certain mileage, around the 100k mark if it is blocked or not eg it is a service item. Remember most car are built to last 10 years or 100k after that the manufacturer thinks you should just buy a new car 😅😅😅 Great video none the less.

yep - had this exact issue a few months ago (Peugeot 308 Diesel). just because the car was programmed to say the DPF needed a replacement after a specific mileage. it was your videos that I used to educate myself about the pressure - and meant that I knew that my local garage was full of it when they offered to drill out the DPF and remap the computer to think it was all OK.

I have just rebuilt a Fiat Panda 1.3 diesel. An engine used in Pugs, Fiats, GM and Suzuki. The timing chain makes a bicycle chain look big. And it will break soon after 100,000 miles. Mine was not significantly worn but side plates had fractured. It clearly should be a double row. Not the wimpy thing they have fitted.

I often thought about this. Computers ( master and slaves ) run the car. Any computer can be programmed to fail. But I thought to myself that a car manufacturer would never do this because it’s dangerous. I’m in a class action lawsuit, so I can’t say too much at this point in time. I took my wife’s vehicle to the dealership for an oil change and have the mechanic go over it looking for anything that might need servicing soon. I picked up the vehicle, the mechanic said to me, the vehicle is in perfect condition ( that’s always nice to hear ) and there are no worries. Pick up the wife from work, stopped to pick up a few groceries, then home. When I backed out of the parking spot it died. No idiot lights were on and we made it home. Following morning my wife had some errands to run, she comes back into the house and said, the vehicle is dead and the check engine light was on. It started no problem, but put it into gear and it went kaput. I had it towed to a shop where I knew the owner and he is brilliant. He used a 12k scan tool that told him everything that it should, except for one thing. Has the OBDII been messed with? He found it was preprogrammed to quit after 25 miles. The part that was to fail was a camshaft sensor. He replaced it and charged me 50$ the dealership wanted 450$. So, I guess it’s true. You can mess with the computer and tell it to make such and such module fail after x amount of miles. This dealership has dug its own grave and they know it.

Is this an isolated occurrence with this Particular model or, does this happen with any other cars you have come across ? I’ve never heard of this before, DPF codes being triggered intentionally once a vehicle reaches a set amount of mileage. Fascinating stuff ! This video is an eye opener, very informative. You made it very easy to understand and the walk through tutorial on the fix looked simple enough to follow, even for a newbie like myself, who’s watching and learning from the masters to try and develop my diagnostic skills. Thank you for creating such great content.

This mechanic is an idiot and probably killed this engine for good. This car has the eolys catalytic additive (tank), it is a special case and the dpf really must be removed and emptied (of the deposits) or changed because the additive material forms deposits which accumulate in the dpf and can not be burned out. It helps to burn the carbon deposits, but will itself accumulate. There is no way around it and it will destroy the engine otherwise, thus there is a hard limit and it is supposed to be taken care in the service program (which this car did not follow). Some transition period engines used it as an afterthought and it can not be cleaned without removing the dpf and it will fill the dpf with the catalyst powder and clog it. The cavities physically fill up and eventually there will be no surface area left. Obviously it will not be full at this point yet, but will die later now that it was permanently reset. The back pressure and regeneration attempts the car will do will dilute the oil and if nothing else, will hydrolock the engine. These engine with eolys have practically disappeared because they all failed because of idiots like this. Note that not all the same cars and engines have this, but it made it possible to approve the car to higher emission class when it was not legally required yet, but some cities etc. did mandate it so some have some do not. Note that this is different from adblue etc. or regular dpf regeneration.

The reason the reset mileage was so high is because it was reading in meters, not miles. :) The original reading said zero kilometers remaining, and when you reset it it somehow got set to meters in the process, which is why it's reading four million and change.

Ash loaded is a thing. Soot gets turned into ash it's smaller then soot but still sits in the dpf. But too much ash will plug the dpf. IDK about cars but semi trucks DPF are common place to fail. Mostly from bypass, substight cracking before or during cleaning and in rare case where you can't unclog a dpf. Also other external factors can fail a dpf like if the turbo seal fails, then dumps oil on the dpf, or the whole turbine comes apart and smacks the the doc and dpf.

But im lucky enough to have the laucnh x431 pro 5 so i can see these things and through wathcing jimmys and many other channels have been abke to do somehting about and now its got 119k until dpf needs replacing.

Motor vehicle companies have been doing things like this for decades. I'm an automotive technician and when I was an apprentice in the 80s, Ford used a 'timer' that set a code to have the catalytic converter changed. Of course we were supposed to give the whole emissions system a once over as well. (air pump, PCV, EGR system) What gets me about the diesel DPF filter replacements is that you can have them cleaned (they 'burn' them out in an oven). It's not a quick turn around but it's still doable.

It appears to not follow the pressure sensor for actual regen stats as you can show 0-1kpa and it be 50% full and at 90% full before a regen kicks in it can be 2kpa at 2000rpm, its following some kind of algorithm/calculation?

I knew a top mechanic who worked for one of the big four Japanese motorcycles . He told me that if you paid for servicing at approved dealerships you would have parts replaced at certain miles . Those parts would break if an owner did the maintenance listed in the factory manual . My bike's in built failure point was the carburettor butterfly valve ; it would last a certain mileage and then metal fatigue would cause it to snap of its pivot and end up damaging pistons and valves . Nasty eh ?
@paulmaxwell8851
@paulmaxwell8851 Год назад
I find that story a bit hard to believe. Even the most ordinary of Briggs and Stratton engines can go decades and decades with no degradation of the carb's butterfly. I've never, ever heard of a butterfly in ANY engine ever failing.

Peugeot have been doing this crap for over 20 years, before 2000 they just made unreliable cars by accident and then had special parts which could only be purchased from their dealerships, like lambda sensors. The centreless wheels that nobody could balance, forcing you to buy tyres from the dealerships. TORX screws literally everywhere at a time when the home mechanical simply could get hold of the tools, designed for high torque applications, Peugeot using them to hold down everything from shock top mounts to interior trim panels, but I suppose better then Fords single use plastic clips which break if you try to take anything apart. The last car Peugeot made which was just about worth the hassle/cost, was the 106 and 306, Rallye and GTI6, everything after that (2001) is a shower of sh*te.

I’m about to graduate as an engineer in the US and we did the engineering pledge that we are serving the public. This is sort of behavior here sickens me. Every firm I have worked for would never consider designing something to fail prematurely or have some sort of issue that is profit driven. To put this into perspective, the electrical sizing, sewer, portable water heating, requirements we make for buildings are always too big on purpose. We do not want people in the future to have issues where there is not enough. It would cost-prohibitive to fix such a thing and dangerous to have a shortage.
