How YouTube Has Helped & Also Affected My Business

some pros and cons of becoming popular on RU-vid.
a major issue for me isconsistent calls of requests for telephone help in large numbers that really affects me being able to efficiently run my business.
Good points are that I've been able to show my work and how effective my dpf cleaning skills and procedures are so I do get more customers.
as a mobile car repair mechanic it's difficult to juggle work, emails, calls, etc.

As a tech myself Jimmy, the message you leave on your answer phone could say that it's for "BOOKINGS ONLY" and your no longer giving out advice on the phone anymore. You will never please everyone no matter how hard you try fella. You go much further than most people by actually putting a video up in your first place!! People seem to forget you need a life as well. Look after no 1 first fella ☝️🤜

Yes, a number redirected to message bank saying bookings only, no advice. Different number for actual clients with instructions to not pass the number on. Also rearranging his schedule to allow some times for local clients. I never fully book myself out because there is a high chance I will get some regular call. Eric from South Main Auto had a real problem with this as he would get people drop-in to chat, and of course he can't do that because he is running a business. He seems to have ridden this out. The other option is training someone to run a second van, or maybe a several static locations he can set up at for a day or two and organise appointments by location. Maybe a school of DPF cleaning? 😁

Success is a double edged sword as you have found mate. You must look after your business first and your mental health. Just put one video up a week. Your viewers will appreciate it one a day or one a week. Your wellbeing is more important than filming anything at all. Do your job and be happy mate.

Hi Jimmy I had a lot of this as a mobile mechanic, I now have my own garage and staff and my productivity has gone through the roof. In terms of the phone calls you just have to be straight up with people and say you can't be handing out advice free of charge all the information you can offer is available on your channel. The volume of calls you receive could definitely be turned into a business in its self if you start charging for your advice and procedures of diagnosis, however you will need trained staff to fix your in person bookings. I wish you all the best pal your videos have taught me a lot and helped my business 👍

Far too many people have this sense of entitlement that their issue is so important that it need your urgent attention. With your reach on RU-vid I wonder if you could team up with a company and set up a system like Dignose Dan did? An online subscription service that lists all technical bulletins. You could have the step by step process for different vehicles DPF.

Your explanation of the faults and the live data is spot on. I'm an ex JLR master tech, but I've learnt more about DPF faults from watching your videos. You explain everything perfectly. As for people ringing you, you are doing the right thing by blocking them, there is more than enough information in your videos for a competent mechanic to fix any DFP fault. You're a professional, hard working honest guy with integrity and the will to help people that have often been let down by their previous mechanics/garages. That in itself is rare, but, you go further, making clear and informative videos - I can personally say that I've learnt a lot from them - for which I thank you. Unfortunately some people can be unthinking, lazy, selfish ....etc... there's nothing wrong with creating a buffer between them and yourself/business - don't feel bad about that. This is good idea. “ Carbon Clean NI “ - Have a good website system. You book a time / date slot,,,, if there’s issues and you email the co. They respond straight away. But they don’t answer or return calls. They also do a regional day. So they’ll use facebook to advertise that on Mon /xx / Jan we will be at ‘Manchester’ book your slot for Jan. … that way you can have 3/4 jobs booked in with booking fee / non refundable 24hrs before date. So the work is well structured and you get paid with less hassle.

The last time I was in business for myself was back in 2005 - A very well known UK Bed Company sunk me, I was driving all over Scotland delivering beds at ANY TIME the customer wanted that bed / beds delivered, BUT the customer wanted that delivery for nothing, it SHOULD have been a VERY SIMPLE transaction, when I arrive with the customers bed THEY PAY ME, after all, me and another human did collect the bed from a warehouse ''NOT NEAR WHERE I LIVE'' I put diesel in the truck and delivered the bed at whatever time they desired, when it was convenient for them 2 take delivery of the bed, that does come with a PRICE! IF the well known bed company were picking up the delivery fee ..................MMMmmmm They paid whenever it suited them, I was chasing up unpaid invoices that were 90+ days old.

The problem is that people are to lazy to learn stuff by them self. A have a story from my experience. My mothers car developed a problem and I tried to fix it using internet. No luck. The car went to the dealer and costed a lot of money to fix. After some time the same issue came up. This time I new what was wrong but made a lot of effort to learn how entire common rail system works that next time what ever the problem would be I knew what to look for and what is not right on diag tool real time data. It took a lot of effort and time, reading books, repair manuals, forums but it was worth it. I'm not a pro by any means but it saves me a lot of money doing myself.

The trick is finding the balance. I recently downsized my business and I have put more emphasis on the technology and the machines I have. My business runs on standing orders during busy periods and I've never been so secure. Add staff slowly and build really strong foundations. Once you have a strong bank balance, try and find the money making niches. A garage is a great idea as long as you are not tied to it 7 days and nights a week. Maybe get a cheap garage and stick a few young fellas in there and let it break even for a few years and then you will have an idea if its a goer.

I would say that's the cost of fame, Jimmy. DPFs have become a major nightmare for every diesel owner, so it's natural that people run to the guy that provenly can sort problems that others can't. With what I learned in your videos, I would probably be able to clean the DPF in my car, but I would need to invest 3 or 4 grand on a scanner to clear codes and reset counters (not to mention manufacturer access subscriptions and all other tools and chemicals) - this isn't affordable on a DIY level. Wish there were more trustworthy techs like you, across Europe.

What about 'what three words' for sharing your location? Put a disclaimer on your website asking people not to call unless booking a job in because time is money. I work in a factory repairing machinery. I'll show the operators how to do basic stuff like unjamminng a part, removing a confine to get to it using allen keys, cleaning a sensor. I can show a person a hundred times and they still will not get it. That's the same people who are calling you after watching your videos mate. Tell them it's 70quid an hour for you to speak to them. They'll soon stop contacting you.

He’s done so many videos now you’d think it was kinda obvious what the process is. If you don’t have a resetting scanner then all you can do is poke and hope looking for leaks and checking adblue and oil levels, clean the adblue injector and the DPF, check the throttle body on the landrovers, the outside temp sensors on the van mirrors etc but still usually someone has to go into it and reset it, there’s no point watching a video and then phoning the man, all the info is in the video. Those Launch scanners are thousands and thousands of pounds, no one spends that unless it’s necessary for the job, indicating that if you don’t have access to one then it’s unlikely a phone call will be able to bypass the need to get it scanned and reset. People are tossers, I had a bloke ask me to get him pads for a Lexus, £19 trade, he’d diagnosed the squealing as low pads, I got the wheels off and the pads were half worn, he insisted I clean and refit them and take the new ones back. The pads were off, so why not just fit the new ones, he saved nothing cos come the mot I refused to do the suspension arm for him and a couple of other little bits and he ended up getting a £500 bill.

Hi Jimmy..i have the same issues as you, i'm a mobile mechanic, i get alot of people asking for advice etc....i don't get into any techie advice and just advise the diagnostic charge and when i can attend...that tends to filter out the people who want to spend and the ones who don't...all the best mate.

It's very easy to fix it brother, you need a flywheel added to your business, a private group with only fitters join and where others help them when they have a question, have this automated via a paid form, have a paid PDF download on your website to get a link to a privet contact form to ask a question via email only and you get back to them within 48 hours and send them to the private group also, and another PDF for more to get your number but you knock it off the price if they book it in the same day only. As for your local customers just get a cheap phone only they have. I would love to try help you with this and give you some tips and tricks. Also brother you need to double your price at this point and get less calls and more time back and more income. Control traffic and you control money. Be more kind to yourself Jimmy seen my dad get like you when he was a full-time fitter he never listened to me but now he can see I was right. Most people don't like us, they only like what we can do for them so don't try please people it won't work. You got this bro, and after Christmas your life will change and you won't look back and wish you did it quicker. We all got you bro.

Hey, love your vids & congrats on your success. May I suggest an idea. If you are in a position to afford it. Hire someone to operate your phones and emails. Their role is to be in between you and customers. Under no circumstances are they to let customers speak to you direct. If the person on the other end of the phone is wanting free advice .... sorry to bad you can make a booking and you come out or... bye. Book jobs and fill up your calendar. Once the person is trained they could do this from home with a laptop and head set. It takes time to train and employees are rarely forever yet I believe this would be best for you. I spent many years teaching people to do this. Your videos taught me something. I would be happy to talk about it if you would like. All the best and merry x mas.

Was going to write pretty much this. Others have suggested online booking system, but that doesn't remove the need for you to manage that, deal with cancellations, lost souls etc. Have a support person to deal with all of this, and triage stuff so you only need to deal with one person who knows what's priority. You need to have a phone to deal with suppliers and legitimate business.

We live in a country (UK) where most people don't value another person's skill level. I found that the Auto trade is the most underappreciated by the public out of all the trades going. The fact that this person has took the time (yrs) to learn and also investment (tooling) means nothing to them. Sadly as you can see by this video, the public's attitude has not and probably will not change in the future, especially as we now live in a society where the majority of people think that a mechanic's job is easy as "you just plug the computer in and it tells you what to change". Plus also demand that they have your attention immediately to rectify the problem that they have. It's a hard trade to be in when most of the public devalue your time and skill set.... Merry Christmas Jimmy, good luck for the future 👍🏼👍🏼 Paul (23yrs in the trade, switched last yr and now working on Locomotives. Can have my phone turned back on now! 😂).

Feel your pain mate. The pointless endless phone calls, the customers who turn up just wanting a free diag so they can go away and try and fix it on their own cheap and the snotty customers that don't appreciate the time and effort it takes to properly diagnose and fix some of these modern vehicles and don't want to pay the going rate. The trade is ruined.

Having a garage could possibly increase your overheads. But grovelling about when it's pissing with rain isn't fun. Hold fast Jimmy, things will in change in 2024. You're a credit to your trade. I'm sure you've made a lot of customers happy. Good luck mate.👍 Is there anyone who could answer phone calls for you, and pass on serous calls for actual repairs.

The trouble with RU-vid is you don't know who is watching your videos. Be careful. I do sympathise. I have my own garage where I take our vehicles and they do a good job at a reasonable price and are trustworthy. Pity others don't do the same. I like watching your videos but I'd never dream of trying to contact you. Good luck.

Hi jimmy, the problem is obvious, idiots who think they are mechanics, take their car to bits then panic when they realize there not mechanics. I appreciate your videos and have sorted a few problems just by watching your videos. If i think its to technical after watching your youtube video i will take the car to a garage for them to do, (not really rocket science) keep up the good work.

Well said, you’re one bloke who has other things to do than be a phone answering service. I’ve watched your videos and they have helped me greatly as a home mechanic who does the odd bit job for mates. To know that there’s usually an underlying fault causing a blocked dpf has made me search for them, and making use of live data on my scan tool is a revelation. So thank you for doing what you do mate.

now retired but been thru all your stuff--- I repaired auto transmissions in Scotland for thirty+ years and always had the query-calls. I formulated a business policy and tried to stick with it. policy on credit--- staff discipline --- chargeable time etc. My company policy was " No tech chat unless I had carried out diagnostics on the vehicle (which is chargeable)". Any chat about advice on faults.was only guesswork as hadn't seen the vehicle.. I was only interested in repairing the vehicle, if they were not interested in that for whatever reason there wasn't much point in talking about it. Unfriendly? maybe, but it's about business and if the person on the phone wasn't paying for my time, then they were stealing that time from somebody else who was paying for it!

I think that in every country You will have the same issue - people not happy. I come to UK in 2009 and I also saw this change. But in my home country is the same issue. The problem is that we have this global business models and everyone is focus on profits as priority. I remember as young guy, my parents had much more time to spend with us, than I have for my kids today.
