Cartoon Network UK promos and ads (November 2000) [1]

Clips from the Cartoon Network from late November 2000, I believe, mostly around episodes of Dragon Ball Z. Lots of mentions of Ed, Edd, n Eddy, Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and one of my personal favourites, Cow and Chicken. Quite surreal in tone, that one, but it always cracked me up. We end going into Tom and Jerry (another fave), but from even that tiny glimpse, we all know it's a 1960s one and therefore not proper Tom and Jerry. Not sure I like CGI Tony the Tiger either, now that I think about it - a classic case of improved technology leading to inferior results, I'd say. Still, plenty here to bring back nice memories.
One of the promos in particular suffers from quite a bit of digital reception loss - sorry about that. I've fixed it the best I can, and it only lasts a few seconds.
Many thanks to ‪@David315842‬ for providing this tape.
(If you're a copyright holder and have any objections, please feel free to contact me. Alternatively, I haven't monetised the video, so you're welcome to do so, and that way everybody wins.)

I'd have loved to have won all those prizes. Ironically i did get that exact same Bush tv/video combi that Christmas, though in black. CN was in a league of it's own around this time. Promos referencing Budweiser ads and Ali G? We never had it so good. Great seeing that Tom and Jerry ident at the end again too.

I've got some more from the same era coming soon, and some of the references are amazing. There's even an extended promo based around a parody of the reality series Survivor, featuring multiple CN stars! You're right - we didn't know how good we had it back then.

Cartoon Network/CNX/Toonami had talented promo editors on staff. Back in the day, Cable & Wireless would inject their own adverts into the Cartoon Network feed, covering up those promos.
@VideotapeFTW
@VideotapeFTW Год назад
That's absolutely criminal of Cable and Wireless - these promos were fundamental to the channel's identity! They really did go above and beyond.

There is another advert with a third answer to "What's a Boomrang".... A friend called Boomer who phoned. "Boomer Rang". I don't think that one has Hugh Laurie doing the voice over. This era of Cartoon Network is a little bit after my time watching but I watched a lot of boomerang, I would think it was a very cheap channel to run as back then it was all archive content from the Turner owned Hannah Barbera / MGM / Warner library.
@David315842
@David315842 Год назад
What you described could have been an earlier commercial for the channel. Boomerang was indeed focused on the older cartoons, that used to air on Cartoon Network a lot more often, but as CN were now producing more of their own cartoons and they wanted to branch out to other genres, they likely thought that giving the older cartoons their own channel would be the best move, that way both audiences who like older shows and newer shows would be appeased. :) It was an idea that was very much inevitable. :) Boomerang though was only available through satellite and wasn't available as an option with On Digital which is how I was able to get these recordings. By then, Turner was fully owned by Time Warner. (AOL Time Warner at this period).
@Majorhappysaccount
@Majorhappysaccount Год назад
@@David315842 Thank for the clarification on which company bought who, I knew they were all owned by the same entity but didn't know the one at the top. And yes it could have been an earlier advert. I worked weekends in an electronic shop selling On-digital boxes around this time, most people were confused by the concept and put off by the price, which was only slightly less than a basic Swindon cable package. With Multiplex space being so sparse I'm surprised CN broadcast 24 hours on On Digital, With cable it switched to TNT at 9pm.
@David315842
@David315842 Год назад
@@Majorhappysaccount Turner was brought out by Warner around 1997. Easy to know as Warner Home Video began distributing Hanna-Barbera stuff around then. Nowadays they are Warner-Discovery after their merger with The Discovery Channel and it's network of channels etc.. Though the company has had many names over the years, though it's easier to keep up, unlike the nightmare that is National Amusements who likes paying 'pass the buck' with it's three main entities; CBS, Paramount and Viacom. What was so hard to understand? You just got a few extra satellite/cable channels through your aerial with a set top box and subscription without the need for a satellite or cable. I guess some people were still bamboozled by things like 'Digital TV' and the fact there was a Channel 5 now with the most silliest way of receiving it possible; through video recorders. I recall now that Cartoon Network was indeed 24/7 with ON Digital, that was impressive for it's time. :) I recall when they got Nickelodeon for a time, they wound up time sharing with Paramount Comedy. That makes sense though as they were both properties of National Amusements (though they will seem to never admit to that),
@David315842
@David315842 Год назад
OK yeah, I watched quite a bit of DBZ and Toonami in general. I think I also saw a few other shows that CN promoted such as Cow and Chicken (the show with the infamous lesbian episode, look it up). So sadly, this was recording off of ON Digital, the ancient ancestor of Freeview with satellite/cable channels tacked on, good idea but as we learnt the execution could have done with more work. Funnily enough nowadays you can probably get away with more of a decent signal, even in London. So yeah some imperfections are unavoidable I'm afraid. Also MASSIVE apologies for my strange dislike of the Gap Kids "Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" ads, I think I eventually gave up and just recorded those down the line, I think? But on other tapes. I forgot CN did the same mistake as Irwin Toys, calling Saiyans from Dragonball Z "Cyans'. LOL. :D Fortunately CGI Tony and Doctor "Tim Curry" Cheetah didn't stay for too long as memory serves. :D Maybe that Furby was telling Dr. X to "hold tight" like he was doing at the end of that McDonald's ad. :D Ah Famosa Toys, they still exist, but pulled out of the UK market years ago, 'before' Brexit people, 'before'! LOL. I don't know though what the heck happened with that first Kellogg's Variety ad, but at least the second one was fine. (Tape age I suppose)? I guess now some people will also know how to 'Ed' now. LOL. :D Thanks again for uploading this. :)

Haha - I was wondering what was going on with those specific ads that kept cutting out after two seconds! Never mind. I don't think I've come across a full recording of any of them yet, but maybe they'll show up eventually. I wouldn't worry too much about the ON Digital quality - it's a really good picture in general, it's just a lot more harsh than analogue when it suddenly glitches. As for Cow and Chicken, that show was absolutely insane and really pushed things further than you'd expect. Then again, this same tape has some SM:tv Live clips (coming soon) that contained jokes and innuendos they wouldn't even consider doing these days, so maybe it really was just 'different times'. Either way, thanks for providing the recordings!
@David315842
@David315842 Год назад
@@VideotapeFTW They will probably show up on future tapes with yep more CN stuff on them, plus some Nickelodeon, some Fox Kids etc. (Though that was when we got Sky). That was the thing though, I like to think that SM:TV Live was trying to cater to kids AND teens, with the innuendo stuff more aiming towards teens. Which helps my theory is the fact that they had both Pokémon for younger kids AND Sabrina: The Teenage Witch for teens, often aired during the same shows. ;) Cow and Chicken was just developed to be as insane as possible. A superhero cow who speaks only Spanish...OK then. :D You're welcome and I'm glad loads of people are getting a kick from all this nostalgia. ;)
