Wander over Yonder had an episode titled ‘The Cartoon’, where the main bad guy, Lord Hater, had his henchman make an action cartoon about him beating Wander, it’s kinda similar to the Kirby episode. I haven’t seen the episode, the only thing I know is a clip that’s passed around where Lord Hater says ‘animation is hard and the people who do this should get more credit and respect’, then just stares into the camera.

I love the Beavis and Butthead episode where Van Driessen tries to teach them about animation, and as he’s explaining the limitless artistic potential that animation has, it just holds a shot of beavis and butthead doing nothing for like 2 minutes

Someone once told me “Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken,” was the anime equivalent of Ed Edd n Eddy, and I mean…they’re not entirely off.

Fun fact! At 3:32 The weird ax hat that Ren wears is based on a weapon called the fasces, which was basically a bundle of sticks tied around an ax, im pretty sure it was to give it more weight for executions and generally chopping. It was seen as a symbol of power and justice, theres even a few on American flags and emblems. If you haven't already notices the connection "fasces" would later be turned into the term "fascist", as fasces were often used in totalitarian/ hyper authoritarian governments, and for revolutionaries seen as a sign of checked power. So yes, the episode is directly calling Ren (and by extention John K) a fascist, just thought that was a neat touch.

I was always waiting for someone to talk about the Ren and Stimpy "it's okay, lots of people make cartoons that can't draw" episode... at least subconsciously

It was interesting seeing the view of animation in the early 2000s. It's really neat how modern social media stuff is able to collect animators and content creators to an audience without having to go through business and focus groups. Allows for a lot of unique stuff that might not existed 20 years ago. Also home computers, animation software and digital tablets I'm sure have helped in streaming animation projection. Would be very difficult to do a flash style animation in 1980 let alone find someone to show it to.

I know Pan might’ve not have time to mention this , but I really enjoyed the episode of Big city greens where they visit an animation studio and Cricket comes up with an insanely bad ending for the series the people were working on and Tiley was doing everything she can to stop it (honestly kind of felt like it was throwing shade at finale to Star Vs)

Stimpy's cartoon show was originally supposed to be about how cartoonists and generally people in show production get abused and mistreated by networks and executives. These problems still exist the industry. In my opinion the true middle finger to John K is Reverend Jack, an episode that only has jokes/injokes about him.

Most Japanese jobs are pretty much just office jobs, and like any job, there is burnout. Whether in the Mangaka to the Animation department, it is very common for just a single person(s) so burn themselves out over a sleepless week. Also Eizouken always hits when it comes to the feeling of rushed wonder and determination to finish something you're proud of.

Artist and cofounder of Radio Comix Elin Winkler once gave me advice in the same league as the plot of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. "Your dream project doesn't matter. All that ever matters is finished pages." At first, as an artist fresh out of leaving my full time job and moving into full time commissioned art, it kinda felt less like advice at the time and more like a "give up, kid" sort of message. But as time wore on, I realized that she meant it as "Your dream project can't ever be complete if you can't keep yourself afloat, so keep creating and make your dream project as best you can on the side." Now I've never properly come up with a dream project I truly wanted to make, but knowing full well that all that matters is finished pages motivates me to continue regardless.

These kind of episodes get a lot more entertaining if you’ve actually worked in animation yourself. In fact: The Tiny Toons “Animaniacs” episode was literally my first education on how cartoons are made.

There is an episode of Sailor Moon I watched a few months ago that featured a character named Lori working on the upcoming Sailor V film, but was criticized for her drawings being less than stellar. In desperate hope for more pencils to use, she decides to use some from her friend, with the last one remaining being charged by Nephilite's dark matter. Throughout the rest of the episode, after completing some animations, Lori plans on destroying Sailor V at the end of the film in favor of making her own studio. She was luckily turned back to normal at the end thanks to the Sailor Scouts destroying the Gemini Warriors and the Sailor V film got a happy ending.

Has anyone else seen the Big City Greens episode where Cricket and Tilly get to see how their favourite show is animated? Its also a take that to the final season of Game of Thrones and its one of my fave episodes.

If these were truly accurate to today's animation, there should be at least one episode where the cartoonist has to deal with the pilot either being marked as "for kids", age restricted, or struck down by Sony Music Entertainment for having three seconds of a copyrighted song.

Eizouken I think captures the essence and magic of working on an animation project as a passion. It's wholesome, and has a great dynamic and balance to the cast that makes it feel so genuine.

Animation Runner Kuromi is a great two episode OVA about anime production. Aoi Honoo, or Blue Blazes, is about a guy who went to college with the Studio Gainax founders (Evangelion, Daicon, FLCL, Gurren Lagann) and is one the most anime looking live action show I've ever seen. Very relatable for any procrastinators out there.

The only one I think needs an honorable mention is the episode of South Park where the kids try to save christmas and mr Hankey by making a cartoon, and the kids end up making 'The Spirit Of Christmas' aka the south park short that served as unofficial pilot.

Not gonna lie the staff behind Akira are my favorite example for an animation crew going through hell to make something. It's just admirable even if you don't do anything art related, the amount of detail you see them putting in just amazes me every time and inspires me as an artist. Your vid has a lot to appreciate, great job Pan.

I was in the kitchen getting tape for my sketchbook while you were talking about Mr. Pickles, and it reminded me of that time in my one and only semester of art school when my teacher told us of the time they had this guy who would buy coffee for the animators to draw continuously while on drugs, and it's because they saw him draw rats in his spare time. And that's how a certain animated film about a rat who wanted to become a chef came to life.

slight correction on Shirobako. They DONT work together, and that's pretty much the main arc of the girls. Them coming together to work at the same studio.

Eizouken is great and it's one of my favorite animes from last year, the opening is is great and the song is catchy, also, the music video of Easy Breezy is very creative and references the anime, but If I love the anime is thanks to it's imaginative scenery when the mc talk about their projects and the style of the show radically changes and makes you feel like amazing about what are they talking about.

A part of my soul dies every time I see that scene from Paranoia Agent where the clueless production manager folds up the background artist's painting.

There was one episode of Wander Over Yonder in season 2 where Lord Hater tries to make a cartoon making him more badass villain he actually is and the whole thing turns out to be a big parody of He-Man cartoon with a couple of meta jokes on making cartoons. ("ANIMATION IS SO HARD!!! PEOPLE WHO DO THIS FOR A LIVING DESERVE MORE CREDIT AND RESPECT!!!")

Oh man, Paranoia Agent. The episode with the trio of online chat members who meet up for the first time is still amazing.

The funny thing with that Kirby episode is that if you look at many of the anime that came out during the 50's and 60's, this actually doesn't look that much different.

Here are some recommendations if you visit this topic again: - *Otaku no Video* - one of the earliest works by Gainax, there's a part of the story where the characters basically create their own OVA from their basement, using multiple VCR's to copy the footage (it was the 80's) - *Animation Runner Kuromi* - a new hire at an anime studio is suddenly put in charge (the actual studio head is hospitalized and her coworkers all suck at their jobs) - *The Reluctant Dragon* - made by Disney in the 1940's as a propaganda piece during the infamous animators' strike, it's notable for having Donald Duck's original VA on-screen and hearing Walt Disney prior to decades of smoking - *Seiyu's Life* - technically the series is more about voice acting than animation, but it's still really interesting, especially since a lot of notable Japanese voice actors make guest appearances as themselves (Rie Kugimiya for the win!!!)

Watching episodes like this as a kid made me want to make a cartoon of my own so badly. Despite constantly being shown how stressful and hard it was, I just wanted to do it more

Oh shit, you slapped my nostalgia button hard with that opening of Paranoya Agent! I remember Lil Slugger and that dog...but for the life of me, that show just never held my attention long enough and seemed too weird to me, lol. Granted, it also had massive shoes to fill as Inuyasha reigned supreme to all anime during that era for me and if it wasn't cute dog boys and hot demon men, I only gave it a courtesy interest. But wow...damn, it's fun to be reminded of shows you've forgotten :)

I remember Secret Mountain Fort Awesome. It was alright, wasn't my thing and didn't catch on in general, but it had some potential.

Ah Shirobako, I can re-watch that many times and still enjoy it. Would love them to make a season 2 continuing after the movie.

the kirby anime is such an underrated gem, i would definitely recommend checking out the japanese dub of some other episodes! eizouken is one of my favourite anime of all time. its such a gorgeous and charming show. i didnt know much about the others mentioned, but it was really interesting to see each episode's perspective on the process! EDIT: i really appreciate the proper use of rachel's name, even if shes just a cartoon character it makes me feel validated as a trans person. thanks rebel!

Animators is one of the few fields motivated by passion and enthusiasm for the craft and not mostly money. Too bad they usually get taken advantage of because of it. I am so glad that the internet has made a boom in personal animators.

Keep your hands off Eizouken is a show that I feel everyone should watch despite being about anime cos it's a show that really inspires you to do what you love as well as educate you on the obstacles that come with it. Especially for anyone who's interested in the creative fields or someone who's burnt out doing something they may enjoy, I guarantee you watching this show will ignite a spark of passion in you to go and achieve the goals you desire. Plus it's just fun and beautiful as all hell.

When I watched the first episode of Eizouken, it actually inspired me to draw something. Now, I'd been drawing at that point, I continue to draw, and I will always draw, but I tend to be rather lazy and will often go long stretches without even opening up my sketchbook. But that first episode was so full of passion for animation and art that I just really wanted to draw, and I did (I don't remember what it was I drew). It really felt like a piping hot, delicious cup of coffee for my creative motivation.
