Get Surfshark VPN at surfshark.deals/rebeltaxi and enter promo code REBELTAXI for 83% off and 3 extra months for free! Had to make this vid in 3 days. Wish I had more time. But I guess I'll save the final game Urban Yeti for another vid. Strange Colorful GBA Games 2. Need more GBA game recommendations.
They're probably too long, but I'd like to see you look at Riviera: The Promised Land or Yggdra Union: We Shall Never Fight Alone. They're very weird genre-melding games made by Sting.
If you mean it feels funny? It's suppose to. It's parody taken to the nth level and a bunch of people using this to be themselves and to get together and have fun. People are weird. Bob embraces that. Join us. We have good dental
@@shinanon How about vision? Being in the basement with no light but my screen has irreparably damaged my eyes, would definitely like some vision coverage.
As someone who has studied the Church for a while and is planning on being ordained, i appreciate this coverage of this wonderful weird Dada art collective
Fun fact: Maxwell Atoms, the creator of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, was also a member of The Church of the Subgenius. In which it, alongside possibly Discordianism (its precursor), inspired him to add Eris onto B&M. Hail Eris and praise Bob!!
It's like 20 years past being vaguely funny. What us it even mocking anymore? America has not had a very thin veneer of explicit Christianity since the 90s, and that's being generous.
Have you been to the us there still is a huge Christian influence in the government and even then it can still be funny without that just cause you don’t find it funny and don’t watch/read the news or even go outside doesn’t mean it’s not funny.
I looked up that documentary on letterboxd and the top review is most cracked out piece of writing I've seen since that review included in the Free Birds review.
I remember being told my late dad used to be a member of this church and made a lot of friends there, but never did I actually find out what they actually did. Now's my chance to find out... EDIT: I feel like I'm hallucinating. I think the cameraman at 3:17 is my dad. He did occasionally do camera work, but painting and sculpting were his real specialty. He made a life-sized Watto statue for his local Blockbuster store, and I'm convinced it is now in MoistCr1TiKaL's possession.
THANK YOU for covering the oddity that is Duelin’ Firemen! Also, interestingly, the CGI animation in Duelin’ Firemen was done by Dave Foss, known on RU-vid as “davyforce”. He’s worked on stuff like Tim and Eric, and the iconic “GOLD BOND LIQUI-SHAQ” meme video
@@datanotfoundpleasetryagain3559 Yep! Here's a Reel of davyforce's animations from 1996 showcasing the plane crash scene, as well as mentioning RunAndGun! in the credits. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MTyr9mZbEFg.html
One of the actresses in Duelin Firemen is Nancye Ferguson, who also starred in a pair of Noggin shorts by Klasky Csupo called "What's in Heidi's Head?". It's a really strange trip...
Man, more people need to talk about this funny-ass satirical cult. I've been somewhat fascinated by it for years and I look into it every now and then. I'm really surprised by how little Internet documentation there is of subgenius, I guess because it mostly died out by the early 2000s. My guess as to why is because a lotta teens and college kids joined it in the 80s and just never bothered passing it on, which I guess makes sense since it's basically a giant shitpost
It's shitpost before that became popular. And who knows maybe if enough people are intereseted in the cult it could make a comeback much like others more serious cult (KKK comes to mind). Hopefully one day, it will make a comeback.
From the documentary it died out around the 2000s firstly because the wrong sort of crazy was drawn to it. Taking it seriously. Feeling they had to eliminate the "normies". So between an event like Sandy hook and then later 9/11 it felt in poor taste to continue poking that fun. Especially if those that took it seriously saw these terrible events as good gospel. It got so bad the group started being on lists for potential dangers to keep an eye on.
I thought this would be like Aum Shinrikyo where they made mysterious media (including video games and an anime) and committed awful atrocities. Nope, just a harmless joke group openly pretending to be a cult. A welcomed surprise tbh.
@@raspberry1440kb Ooh!! Now I remember that one! Apparently, it’s made/distributed by Toei (one of the most prolific Japanese media companies of all time) as well!
This was literally one ear rape and 2 creepy stills away to be considered an analogue horror ARG with 30 RU-vidrs trying to discuss the meaning behind the 9/11 scene
I know your views are suffering but i really like the direction youve been taking and i hope your stuff on obscure underground media leads to your audience expanding passed adult animation fans who just want to hear about the latest cartoon network show. Youve currently got some of the best content on this site.
I mean... Some other channels are already covering forgotten medias pretty well. It was a nice niche for Rebeltaxi to be in, especially with his focus on Y2K.
@@aleflippy1997 im not talking about lost media, im talking about underground obscure media and games. The stuff hes been talking about also plays into his aesthetic really well. Like, what other review channel like rebeltaxi would cover something like the church of the subgenius? Its brilliant. I hope he continues this path.
@@IYamJayJay I also just like the remnants of the old humor he carried over the years on the channel. If some other youtuber like night mind reviewed it it would be too dark and serious for me to really stay on the insaneness of the cult, but its def perfect with pan's humor
Got a few gba games to check out. -Summon Night -Drilldozer -the Jet Set Radio port -Klonoa Empire of Dreams and sequel -any Megaman Zero or Battle Network game -Rebelstar
Glad there's someone else who appreciates free streaming services for the same reason I do. Those things may have hot garbage, but some of it is good hot garbage.
I wonder if association could lead to the right connections in the industry... the pieces fall into place. My mind has the path. Praise to JR "Bob" Dobbes LOL
Boktai the sun is in your hands might be worth talking about in a gba video. It was directed by Hideo Kojima and had a sensor in the cartridge so you would have to put it in sunlight to charge your weapon in game.
I'm surprised you never mentioned Harry S. Robins, who voiced Dr. Kleiner in Half-Life 2 & the scientists in HL1. He's a member of the Church of the SubGenius, also going by Dr. Hal.
Damn dude, your editing in this one was really nice! Really like the little animations you've added to the transitions! In terms of GBA games recommendation I have: >Klonoa: Empire of Dreams and Dream Champ tournament (2D Puzzle platformers where you pick-up and throw things. Both of them play almost identically) >Rayman 3 (A Rayman game that plays like a 2D version of Rayman 2 with a Rayman 3 skin slapped on top of it) >TMNT (A beat-em-up game made by the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World devs) >Lady Sia (Haven't played it, but I see this one recommended everywhere)
had it released when it was supposed to, i think duelin firemen would have been one of those games that wasn't that popular in it's initial release, but would have gained a cult audience and probably a rerelease on modern consoles from like limited run
Every saturday at 1 am they host "An Hour of Slack" on a college radio station near me. Without any context (which I didn't have for a long time) it is the most surreal thing to hear driving home sleep deprived from college.
First heard the Hour of Slack in 2005 on the local real collage radio station on a late Friday night. There were Two Christian Preachers having Sex. Praise the name of "Bob"!
I really like how you've used Dottir in this video, their music really gives the vibe of finding ascension or salvation in a place that doesn't feel quite right.
Even weirder is that the space shuttle that crashes into Air Force One and the tower is Columbia, which disintegrated during atmospheric reentry, killing the crew in 2003.
My GBA Part 2 Recommendations: ~Activision Anthology. A collection of old school Atari 2600 games made by Activision. Despite being on the GBA, however, it actually managed to have even more content then its ports on systems like the PS2, with high score saving (which for some reason wasn't present on the console releases), as well as prototypes of unknown and unreleased 2600 games. ~The "bit Generations" series. A collection of what I can only describe as "TRON-esque Warioware microgames", they were released in Japan in 2 different waves by Skip Ltd., who also made the Bit. Trip series. ~Godzilla: Domination. Made by WayForward (Yes, the Shantae Wayforward), it's a 2-D arena fighter that lets you play as a bunch of different monsters from the Godzilla series, each with their own unique movesets & an original story mode. ~Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge. A 3D racer on GBA that, despite the crummy visuals, has a shockingly smooth frame rate. How they did it on GBA I genuinely don't know.
"The Hour of Slack" is a podcast put out by them and its a wild ride. Mix of music, "preaching" and surreal short stories. "The Agent and Mr. Dobbs" is a classic. Discordianism is also a similar movement. By reading this sentence, you are now officially a pope!
A meme cult predating meme cults? Omg sign me up lol I wonder if Rugrats was referencing it when the kids would say "Thank Bob" instead of "Thank God".
4:29 Really, Tubi is what I wish Hulu still was. They have the Dub of Yugioh Arc-V, not even Crunchyroll has that. I mean, no one wants to watch Arc-V, but they are the only free legal way to see it baby!
These guys popped up along the way in the LHOHQ rabbit hole that blameitonjorge did a video on a while back. Half-Life voice actor Harry S. Robins (Dr. Kleiner) is also a member if this and voiced a promotional video for them back in the 80s.
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting you to talk about J.R. “Bob” Dobbs, nor the Church of the SubGenius. It’s pretty cool that they did videos games. It’s the weirdest “religion” that’s unapologetically weird. I’m also surprise that you saw the documentary. Tubi also supports most of Shout! Factory’s stuff. Hope to see more. I await more Bob Dobbs stuff. “F**k ‘em, if they can’t take a joke.” -J.R. “Bob” Dobbs
I have the audio for this video on on while driving home after midnight.. And I gotta say, Just listening to this alone Made me more awake and alert while driving than the fast food that I grabbed along the way. So thank you for getting me home safely, without without falling asleep at the wheel. Because now I will not sleep the rest of the night.
Always love learning more about the weirdness of the Church of SubGenius - had no idea they were connected to some games. I'm surprised more folks on RU-vid haven't talked about them.
OHHH I have been following Grady sain and dueling fireman for a long time now and had no fucking clue church of the subgenius was the reason for all these huge names wow ...
Fringe picks: -nicktoons frame frame frenzy (a pokemon snap type of game with the nickelodeon cast) -Driven (shitty car racing game) -Road Rash Jailbreak (A racing fighting game? Its fun, but weird, a bit like mario kart) -Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: shitty boxing game Normal/good picks: -warioland 4 - mario & luigi superstar saga -metroid fusion/zero mission -the sonic advance trillogy games - megaman zero games (1 to 4) -megaman battle network games (1 to 5)
If you are serious about those GBA recommendations, then I decided to change my mind about the Battle Network games and raise you a Summon Night: Swordcraft story and Yggdra Union.
For GBA games I'd recommend the Starfy series. I believe they got translated and are a really fun underrated series. Starfy also is in Smash as an assist.
This cult figurehead has fascinated me so much I'm going to prom bearing a resemblance to him with that hairstyle, right now I'm looking for a woodpipe.
I'm gonna recommend Lady Sia, it's a very colorful action platformer with a lot of cool animations. I will say it's not too strange but some of the enemies have odd designs.
