Carve a Wood Spirit Whistle

In this video, watch as I carve a wood spirit whistle from a 1" by 1" by 6 " block of basswood. You could also refer to these caricature cavings as hillbillies or wizards. This will make a great gift for kids or grandkids. You can also attach them to a lanyard. I'll be using my very sharp and efficient DHK knife. And my Flexcut detail knife. I finish the carving with various acrylic paints.

Those DHK knives stay very sharp but I still put them on the strop before every carving. I'm also a very slow carver as you can probably tell - LOL.

Sorry, didn’t mean to be critical. I have no idea how dry and hard your wood is. I have cut and drilled a dozen blanks, and it will become a whittling project for a Friday afternoon group. Thank you for the fun idea.

@@DarkRumAgain No apology needed. I seem to get this feedback on a few of my other videos, but the knives are razor sharp. Sometimes it can be the wood is not the best basswood. I do carve very slowly though and it will appear like the knife (or me) is struggling. Sometimes if I feel like the blade is catching too much in the grain, I'll pull it out and come from the other direction. There can be a lot of factors. Happy whittling!

Thanks for watching! I got into caricature carving a few years back. I started out years ago as a woodturner, then progressed to carving spoons, and in recent years started the caricature carving. As you can see, I bounce back and forth between different woodworking / craft projects on my channel.
