You’re a natural presenter. That demonstration was at just the right pitch for where I am in terms of developing my skills. Lots of good details to take away, like using a card scraper, and masking tape. The result, a very crisp looking lamb’s tongue (bears no anatomical resemblance) is what I was searching on You Tube for. Thanks.

Thanks for the great demo Tom. I felt I was so "there" that I found myself blowing the sawdust on my screen! That detail is so sweet and says "handmade" all over it. Thanks again.

As usual an excellent demonstration as in all of your season 1 of Classic Woodworking. I was wondering, how did you make the two cradles for the post, and how do you secure the post in the cradles so it does not move while you do the chisel work? Finally, will there be a season 2 of Classic Woodworking?
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking 2 года назад
Thanks Bob, glad you enjoyed it! To make the cradles I just took a couple chunks of wood and cut the shape needed to support the post in the different positions needed. One block, large enough to support the square of the post just below the lambs tongue position, and a second smaller block to support at the smaller top end…which also has a closed end to act as a stop. First drew 45 degree angles to form the “V” seat for the post when positioned diagonally as when cutting the lambs tongue. And then drew the square which set into the “V” a little bit to support the leg when it was positioned horizontally. Once drawn, just bandsawed the shapes and glued the blocks to the long plywood base. The plywood base is clamped to the bench top and you can add a clamp on top of the post above the lower block if needed. But usually it sits in the recess firmly enough that I don’t add the clamp on top. Hope that helps! And there’s some current movement towards getting Classic Woodworking back to shooting new episodes later in the new year. Thanks for watching! 👍😎

Thank you! If you’re interested, we recently posted a free video series on making a low pencil post bed which also featured the lambs tongue in addition to the rest of the traditional bed making techniques.

Excellent demonstration on doing a hand cut lamb's tongue. If you liked this, you can watch Tom McLaughlin build a single bed, coming soon, free video series starting August 25, 2020 on RU-vid. The bedpost's will be sort, no lathe is required and he will be doing lamb's tongue's. Tom would love to hear from you..... don't miss it.

Thanks again for the great video. Going to try my hand at these for my timber framed patio cover posts soon! Once I practice them in some scrap 6x6.

That sounds great, they should look really nice on something like that. In a large format as those will be, you might want to experiment making some relief saw cuts across the deeper part of the lambs tongue to make cleaning them out easier...and I would probably use a small sanding drum spindle in my drill to sand the cove section. Have fun, and thanks for watching! 👍😎

Great instructional video Tom. I'm getting set up for a king size bed build that I've been promising my wife for some time and this would be a beautiful accent to the piece. Simple but eye catching. I have to laugh though. I notice on almost every video you have bandages on you finders or like in this one you cut your finger, probably with a chisel? LOL I guess I'm in good company in that respect. If your tools aren't sharp, you can't cut yourself, or do great work! Thanks for all the professional lessons.

Rick Setina Thanks Rick, I’m so glad you found this useful, especially when it’s part of giving a great gift! I love the lambs tongue detail, simple but adds so much. And yes, I had to laugh too at your comment 😂, I’m always dinging up my hands somehow, but never seriously so far thank God. In general I like to bleed a little on everything I make! Thanks for watching 👍

I had to laugh when you said you like to bleed a little on everything. I consider it putting a little bold, sweat, and tears in every project I make. 😆

Just an FYI but the warp stabilizer is a BAD choice for this and most other stabilization needs that include anything in closeup! This was almost unwatchable because of the jello effect making me nauseous!!!! If you need to stabilize a closeup use the motion tracker stabilization option in the future it will crop in so give yourself some extra room on the sides in the shot and it will look 100 times better!
