I really appreciate your Video. I'm always trying to learn something new and recently even got into carving leather. I played around with a Wet Saw and made some simple hearts for my family but this looks really interesting!!
Loved watching this. Recently bought a T&H pneumatic and want to get some chisels to carve letters. I find some straight chisels but have not seen the skews. could you help guide me where I might find some good pneumatic chisels for carving letters and what sizes
Hi Mr. Ferree. I plan to carve some letters by hand into a large piece of limestone. Is there a specific set of tools you would recommend? Eventually I would like to carve letters into other harder materials as well. I was hoping I could get one set of tools for all types of stone. Would you recommend Carbide, tungsten, or just cold steel? I looked on Amazon but was reluctant to just purchase a general set of stone carving tools since I have never done this before. Thanks! Tom
Well, I like to use carbide, it can be used to carve harder stones, like bluestone, or granite= ( expect lots of wear and tear plus breakage with granite) I suggest Trow and Holden tool co. or Bybee tool co. specify lettering tools. Having said that steel tools will also work well. I like the blades to be thin and sharp, which may require grinding and sharpening stones. I use 1/2 " 3/8" and 1/4" if the letters are big I use 3/4' for roughing out. Sometimes ebay and other outlets have tools as well. And Sculpture house NYC also has good tools, but really good tools are where you find them.
@@wayneferree5053 Thank you for that information. The cost for those 3 are $166 from Trow & Holden. I assume that is about what I should expect to pay for quality tools?
any air compressor, an air hose, and a pnuematic hammer ( meaning a piston driven rod that pounds the chisel ) Trow and Holden tool co. vermont, Bicknell , or Dallet. I believe the Italians , the germans and the English all have brands as well. Often the chisels are available as well. It is best to start with a traditional handheld hammer and set of chisels, for that I recommend Sculpture House NYC. If you decide you like the work you can invest in better tools. Also dont forget Ebay Craigslist, etc.
