This is one area that I couldn't figure out. Everyone talks about gaining energy after getting into ketosis but I never got any. 7 months & 70 pounds lost didn't wake me up so I'll try more salt. Now, if I can get educated on keto & depression as well I'd appreciate that, too!

Sorry as I didn't get a notification of responses until this last time. Adding Redmond's salt didn't give me energy. I think when it comes to energy & sleep that I'm out of luck. I hope you all have energy though!

Extra salt helped me so much. I was having horrible inflammation still and the salt finally got rid of it upped my energy.

I've been keto for about a month and still get days like today where I can barely move but other days when I want to sprint up hills. My diets solid macros with plenty of salt. I'm stumped.

You need to increase your fats to 200g per day at least. Keto coaches are preaching .5 for ketosis. For sustaining energy it has to be higher so that You have sustained energy levels. Sounds like you are burning through ketones and your brain is seeking out glucose for energy and there is none. You have to train it the brain to rely primarily on ketones. Increasing fats on top of your current intake keeping carbs at net 20g will not cause weigh gain. Once you get ketones to 1.8 to 3.0 you should have sustained energy. Dr Finney and Dr Naiman recommend this approach. I’ve been following Stephanie Keto Person on youtube who discusses this approach. Don’t worry about calories in and calories out. You can’t cheat using this approach.

Same here, Alex. And I always laugh when someone says increase your protein or fat to X. We’re all different and there is no one universal way of eating that works for everyone. And I’m in great shape, but have those days as well when I wake up feeling I got run over by a truck, and have no energy/motivation...other days my energy is great. I’ve started to keep a food/activity diary to see if I can zero in on the root cause, as I’ve tried everything from electrolytes, taking time off from the gym, and adjusting macros...nothing has helped. Good luck!

@Billy B Hey Billy...any luck? I'm a month in and this is hell. I'm leaning and need not lose any weight but I'm losing weight. I can't eat anymore salads, it won't fit in my stomach. I can't eat anymore bacon or meats or heavy cream or butter either but then how do I get my calories? Worst part is the fatigue! My memory has never been this poor...nor my energy so low! I want to lie on couch all day. This diet reminds me what what you see with overweight unhealthy people w no energy! How is this good? After meals I have never had an issue with nearly falling asleep at my desk...not so now. Every meal wipes me out! Maybe some folks just must have carbs for energy. I'm willing to go another month but if nothing improves this is over.

Again, great information! I enjoy his candor and the helpful information that is provided. I have said it before. Dr. Westman is someone that you can trust with what he says because he backs it up with evidence based science. It is hard to have anyone else on here that compares to him. That is what frustrates me sometimes. When we get off track and make things more complicated and discuss other things that are not evidence based, like Keto for treating Alzheimer's or the necessity for "intermittent fasting." Leave all that to the other so called "experts" out there on RU-vid. Let's focus on using Keto as a powerful tool for treating obesity and diabetes and getting people with these issues off meds!!!

Be careful to check what is in these bullion cubes, many have Maltitol and vegetable oils in them! Better to use pure Sea Salt or Himalayan Pink salt. A pinch on your hand and lick it off a few times a day works amazingly for me .

All the ones I see also have Maltodextrin in them. Maltodextrin raises blood sugar.

I just made what I thought was a healthy meal. I cut 2 bell peppers, and two chicken breasts, seasoned them, and made a fajita bowl. In my bowl, I used about 1/2 cup of rice with a cup of the bell pepper/ chicken mixture. Shortly after I had to go lay down and sleep, which lasted for about 3-4 hours! Maybe im insulin resistant?? I have tried no carbs and lost a lot of weight, but quit because it made me completely lose my appetite. Having some carbs seems to jumpstart my appetite. I overly salt my food and use keto chow zero sugar electrolytes in my water. I wish I had the money to see someone but I'm 20 pounds overweight 😢 i dont feel my best! Two days ago I went to buy new jeans because I'm so uncomfortable in the normal ones but I dont want to move up sizes. The main reason for weight gain is that I worked overnights over 2 years and slept during the day. I quit that job because my health is more important!

I stuck with healthy keto and IF, eating twice a day, for over a month, and I'm done with this nonsense. I drank tons of water, carefully measured out electrolytes and salt, and used the myfitnesspal app to record what I ate. I never got over crippling fatigue that grounded me since I tried keto. My blood pressure was normal before keto, no prescription meds, but now I have very low blood pressure that keeps me so wiped out that I'm unable to do much. I had to give up running, backpacking, and weights. I only hope that I can fix the BP and feel better by eating healthy carbs. I'm tired of internet influencers telling us how wonderful keto is, and how it will work for everyone. And if someone has trouble with the diet, they're told by others online that they didn't do keto correctly. I did see a local doctor who is a big keto and carnivore fan, and he says it can take years for your body to adapt to the diet. He has no clue about what's causing my low BP. He ordered an EKG and heart ultrasound to see if there are any cardiac irregularities.

Great info. This just happened to me. Found my BP too low with 3 BP meds. As soon as they reduced one in half and removed beta blocker my weight loss even excelerated . Took me 7 months of strict keto to lose 36+ pounds. A third of goal weight. I take 100mcg’s of levothyroxine for low thyroid function will that ever be too much med?

Im on keto second time i am losing weight, but feeling terrible always light headed, im taking so much sea salt n pink salt+ multi vitamins+ pottassium supplements, tracking macros, and also counting calories. Blood sugar is mostly 4.3. I love to get the benefits of keto and intermittent fasting and ready to sacrifice anything but for some reason i dont feel good like millions of people feeling out there, feeling worse is the reason why i quit keto first time and like doctor said i gained all that weight back again. I dont knw why im feeling terrible (lightheaded n dizzy) may be keto is not for everybody ?

I have figured out my problem. It was hypotention. No low carb guru's talked about it. I am very sure a lot of people out there feeling the same. I wasnt drinking enough water worried about losing minerals and faint. Now that i increase water intake extra 2-3 litres and wearing compression socks, i feel so much better and seeing the brightside of keto. Lost 16kg in 2 months and feeling great. I recommend people who feels shitty even after taking salts and minerals its not ur salts or low bood sugar. Its low blood pressue increase water intake and work to bring the pressure up.

its because either: you have still high insuline, or it is because of the fat storage you burn has been compromised by PUFAs. what happens is that you burn ketones that are prone to oxidize in your mitochondira, as far as i understand. they get damaged and you have low energy and inflammation. this goes on until all the bad fat you accumulated has been burnt off. do you eat canola oil, seed oils? fish oil supplementation does nothing. you need to eat the real thing, wild fished salmon for example. dont eat any seed oil. what you an try out to be sure: eat supplement ketones. bhb ketones, they must be of the good kind, not the fake ones from scammy china sites. if you ingest ketones and you get rewarded with energy, then your fat storage is compromised. same test can be made with alcohol: (without carbs, like white wine) if the alcohol gives you energy, you have the problem i describe. alcohol gets metobilzed to ketones, you burn them immediatly without adverse affects (severe longterm sideeffects, though, its alcohol...) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DDVjUmUcFVY.html watch this. she has reservation against keto, but she is a biochemist and knows her stuff.

Thanks so much! Do you think some people that already have lower blood pressure to begin with May need more salt than the recommended 3-5g of salt per day? My blood pressure was 95-110/80 usually and now I haven’t measured my blood pressure. I have been doing keto for a month and have lost weight, eating around 1600 calories. Thanks!

I feel better with Keto, which I started after a covid incident last Nov. so I was naturally weaned off everything, cause I could not eat for 2 weeks. I feel so good, that I would never ever return BUT the chronic fatigue has stalled my life. I wake up so tired, I had to drop out of a course and even went to my doctor who took a blood test, all normal, saying I am healthy and imagining! I went to the emergency unit in our local hospital who said I have a stress induced Belastungsst;rung. I just found out this tiredness could be connected to Keto. I will increase fat, salt and take nutritional supplements, lets see if I am better ... otherwise people need to be aware cause I nearly got antidepressant drugs described because no of the doctors asked for my nutrition.

Well, any update? I find I'm able to adhere to Keto for about 2 weeks to a month before my energy drops to zero. And yes, it also impacts my mental health negatively. I ear plenty if keto appropriate foods that includes fat and salt and still I end up after about a month or two feeling like crap. Low energy and depressed. As soon as I reintroduce some carbohydrates I feel great again. I'm starting to think it's unique to the individual. Some of us might run more efficient on fat/protein only while others, on a combo of carbohydrates, fats, and protein. 😶

How does increasing salt affect stage 3a very stable CKD? I measure the recommended 4g in the am and use it throughout the day in my water, coffee and sprinkled over food. Dash diet recommended by nephrologist. I'm starting to have some fatigue 2 months into my keto journey.

Started keto two weeks ago. Used to average 25-30 miles a week running. Now, I can barely get through a simple 5K and my body feels like I ran a marathon. This is nuts! I went into this diet, simply wanting to lose 15 lbs so I could be under my BMI, but I'm starting to think maybe I should try something different, such as IF.

I’ve tried salt, Slow Mag, and potassium gluconate. I still have fatigue, brain fog, and insomnia, and I can’t get rid of cramps in my legs and feet at night. I started Keto on June 16. My last labs just prior to starting in June were normal.

I had a hard time with leg cramps but if I eat tomatoes with dinner like in a salad I find I dont get the cramps. Turns out tomatoes have a lot of magnisem and potassium and now that i dont get the cramps i sleep better. So try adding tomatoes to your last meal and see if it helps

Hi, Butch. I’ve been taking magnesium and potassium every day, but had a particularly difficult night a couple days ago. Last night I had a couple of cups of chicken broth (about 1600 mg sodium), and had a relatively good sleep. I hope it keeps going that way...

I was keto perfect for 8 months but developed cardiac PAC and other palpitations. I tried extras salt, mag and K+ without luck. It was scary to have them. I saw cardiologist, had tests done and my heart was fine (athletes heart). But I could not get rid of it. Until I went back to eating carbs. I loved my keto lifestyle and want to go back. How to I stop the cardiac issues????

Carol M this is quite puzzling as the Keto diet is really just a “back to your roots”, healthy eating lifestyle. There is no such thing as an essential carb, many years ago, there were long periods where carbs were not obtainable. 🤔

@@AdaptYourLife I understood this can happen during the first few weeks but mine was not going away and in fact getting worse. I was told I might be dehydrated, or low of Mag, K+, Salt but none of that helped. I don't think chronic PACs is good for anyone, so I quite the diet, much to my dismay. I don't see any info on it on the internet or very little.

My muscles feels weak. So I’m adding some carbs back but not many. I’m going to listen to my body. I do use real salt in water all day. IF 16/8 . I’m 69, high bp been doing keto less than a month. Taking it slow but st I feel as if I started out too fast. Insulin resistant.

Yeah but the weakness part doesn't indicate insulin resistance there are some situations where if your body is having lower and lower body fat and your body doesn't have that much to eat ; because you know when you fast your body eats body fat if you don't have enough fat on you you're not going to have energy your bodies not going to be as strong as it was when you first started out. When I first started out 4 years ago I was 250 pounds every time I fasted for 3 days I went and walked for 20 Miles my God I had so much energy. now fast forward 2024 I have less energy I have muscle issues in my legs and I'm flat chested im 145. There are plenty of studies and videos out there that talks about if you become healthy weight and you fast too much there are some side effects such as muscle weakness unable to perform at the gym.

I know my comment is going to get deleted that's the fucking problem with keto right now you guys want to talk about the positives, but you don't talk about the negatives that some people may suffer. Just like how other people like you don't want to talk about the negatives of the convoy diet How it can affect your performance in the gym how if you do it too much and you go and eat something unhealthy after several months on a meat only diet you can end up having severe health problems remember there was an article a couple months ago 1 person had a heart attack another person had a stroke.

I have a question for my favorite Doc: I've been on Keto for 6 months, down 43 lbs, stopped acid reflux meds. I'm still feeling lethargic a lot. Could it be not enough salt intake? I take 50mg of Losartin for BP, and it's finally working like it should.. BP has normalized in the last 4 months.. So, can I drink salt water since my BP is under control?? I've been getting cold a lot too, and I live in a hot place. Lol

I lost weight very quickly on Keto - 20 kg in less than 3 months and nearly 35kg after 4 months (5ft 10 and was 90 Kilos now around 66 KG). But am low energy in some ways.

Can you please talk about how to deal with increasing blood pressure on keto. Especially for those who produce more angiotensin converting enzyme. Can reducing saturated fat intake reduce ACE.

Eight days in and fatigue has hit me, I read from Dr Phinney you need 12grams of salt minimum. So from today I'm going to weigh out 12g of salt and use that in my cooking and drinks throughout the day. Unfortunately if the fatigue continues it's a show stopper for me, my fatigue was bad before the diet, but I could manage to go for a decent walk. This fatigue makes me want to do nothing. Not good.

The Agenda this typically lasts for a few days. You can also use bouillon, this works well. We prefer not to use specific amounts as it tends to get complicated. Use sufficient salt or bouillon.

@@AdaptYourLife Thanks. Right now I'm feeling discouraged. Sometimes when I weigh out my veg for dinner I'm left with a tiny bit of broccoli which is depressing, it's one thing cutting out potatoes and bread but now it feels like even my light veg is getting culled. I love broccoli and cabbage but I know it all adds to the carb count, I'm aiming for 20g, any tips here?

The Agenda the only macro that is really reduced is carbs. The other two you should eat to satiety. This really becomes a lifestyle rather than a diet

@@PerfectionHunter Hi, I was into about week six and hit a wall. I had put on weight probably from trying to satiate with fat and I had constant heavy heart beats and fatigue. I upped my carbs in the evening which instantly made me feel better and got into ketosis the next day by eating no carbs. But I just felt fatigued and in the end wanted to get on with my life, I never had that rush of energy the keto champions often talk about so I'm back on the carbs and feel normal again. Very disappointed but I have no explanation for it. I may have another go at some point but I'm in no rush. Guess one size doesn't fit all.

When she said she did feel better after she added more carbs, perhaps it was a psychological response to comfort foods.....it certainly wasn't better for her physically, as she gained weight!🤔

Most definitely, in fact, if you are on Blood Pressure medication, it will need to be adjusted very soon after starting a keto diet as it will become too strong.

It’s funny how,we are told to go to our doctor all the time for any small ailment…I have found many times…I have found answers on my own and that my “doctor” was wrong or didn’t have the answer…not saying you should not consult your doctor, but be reasonably proactive for your own health too. I have found the keto diet very beneficial for me, but it took patience at first. I just feel better in general…my doc always cocks her eyebrow when I tell her I am on a “very low carb” (I don’t dare say keto) 🤪. Proof is on the scale. So, what to do…follow my own intuition, or follow the typical medical advice …eat more carbs and regain the 15 pounds I needed to lose back? Oh yes, and bloodwork is just fine too. For what that’s worth 🙄. We have been lied to by our food industry and doctors by their poor education. Proof is in the population at large who is fatter than ever and suffering more and more from diabetes.

Salt.... of course. So simple. NOT. How about Thyroid hormones needing insulin to be produced properly? How about red blood cells and brain and kidneys needing carbohydrates? How about hypoglycemia? Yes, yes. I know the body has Ketones and produces carbohydrates. But it needs cortisol for gluconeogenesis. So what if she is somebody who can not deal with that amounts of cortisol. Or does not produce the right amounts of carbohydrates for all the body tissues? How about serotonin, which is being raised by carbohydrates? Maybe she is low on that? And so on and so on. Salt is not the only thing, which is important. There are tons of ways to feel like shit on keto, with enough salt. And many people do.

@@AdaptYourLife I did keto for almost two years and dead serious too. I was literally so tired it was bad. I knew what caused it not an increase in fat but I didn’t have carbs. I grew up eating carbs since I was baby had great energy then I did keto which gave me bad energy. I was always sleeping . Then I would get so tired. It was no carbs that caused it.

@@Bhiladpy-up9uy this is not typical. It’s impossible to comment on your specific experience without knowing a lot more. It’s possible you may be one of many that doesn’t need to be on a Keto Diet. Dr. Westman had just launched a book called End Your Carb Confusion, it’s a book about finding your individual carb tolerance, there are 3 phases, only 1 of the phases is keto, the other two are low carb. Perhaps check it out 😊
