Salutations, Erica. I very much appreciated this video, extremely helpful for a newer knife collector and a good reminder for a veteran. I just got a mini Copperlock the other day and I must say, I almost want another one, already! 😅 Cheers!
I can’t sharpen knives anymore without hearing your voice say “Might as well show up with a mirror polished edge Sodbuster- I might get extra lucky” 😅😅😅 Best line in a knife video EVER! Only a “knife person” would think in those terms…
@@ericasedc OMG- I literally had tears in my eyes from laughing when you said that in the video, and my dog was looking at me like “are you OK buddy?” Thanks for all the wonderful content. I still love my CRK knives, but at the moment I’m walking around with a Sod Buster in a Richter slip, thanks to you!
I'm sure some people will recoil in horror at what I did but If I recall correctly I had to flush the cavity and pivots carefully but thoroughly with WD40 on my jig bone handle case knives to remove the polishing compound and schmoo from the pivots and then I used a generic 3 in 1 on the pivots and behind the springs then wiped off the excess. Once they are cleaned and lubed Case Knives operate beautifully and have a very satisfying feel when you open and close them.
I do the exact same thing to my Case knives when I get them haha I usually use my Sharpmaker ceramic rods to knock off the burr, strop, then a touch of KPL (I use the regular but only because its just what I have). Great video
Hey Erica absolutely for sure it’s a complete must you clean and lubricant and sharpen your case knives when you get them I can’t tell you how many videos I did showing how to clean and sharpen case knives….. I show people the paper towels and the blades feel like they were done on a curb!!!!! Fantastic video a lot of first timers have no clue what there doing when they buy a case knife nice job great demonstration 😊be careful out there
Another great video! I'm waiting for my Sod Buster Jr (1095) and large Stockman (cv) from SMKW. Can't wait! I also can't wait until your "Use your shit" t-shirts are ready for sale😃
I'm old enough to remember when American made knife brands like Case, Schrade Old Timer and Western came out of the box razor sharp. Now the best knife brands come out of Scandinavian countries. I couldn't afford a Case Sod buster so I got an Imperial Sod buster knife and despite three years of daily utility use: cutting weeds, cutting boxes up, opening mail, cutting up vegetables & fruits, cutting meat, carving wood, opening plastic packages, gutting fish, cutting finger nails, gathering herbal medicines, the blade remains sharp and holds an edge.
I do like case knives as well, but they do need some work to get them going. Sharpening most of the time, on a few, I've needed to put them in a vise to tighten bolsters adjusting blade play and alignment issues.
A few times when i've recieved new Case knives, i've found that the spring is raised a little bit higher then the liners when the blade is open. So i've actually found myself filing down the surface of the blade which the spring is resting on, and folded som pieces of paper to clean out the gunk. However there is always a risk of skraping against the liners when i use that file. I think at least one time i caused a little bit of side to side blade play when i did that😅
I love Case Knives..but you are so right about the burr...i have at least a dozen out in the garage ..thanks..im going to go tune them up!..Steve from Nova Scotia ,Canada
Great video Erica! I love Case knives and I also follow a similar process when I get a new knife. Your channel is always a worthwhile destination on RU-vid. 😊
As a matter of course I do this to EVERY knife I get from a production company. Its just the way it is. I normally do not use CLPs or penetrating oils on the handles because sometimes that stuff gets into the scales. Food grade light mineral oil works well for me and I don't use my knives as fidget spinners. You can mash the end of a q tip with a pair of needle nose pliers or even whittle down a popsicle stick to help clean out blade channels
Had to come back to this video. I always carried a cheapy knife. Then I saw this video and learned about case knives. I bought the orange mini like in this video and thought it was really cool. Then I bought a bone stag trapper and wow. Then it turned into miniature artwork for me. I even drove to SMKW to look at them. Well now I have 11 case knives and I fiddle with them a lot. Great knives and a fun new hobby for me. So thanks for showing Case knives to me Erica. Love the channel. Take care 😊
Hey Erica, ...yep...dats about it. Only things else left to do I guess is "Dinner and a dance"... Awesome video as usual. I got a Case Large Stockman in Amber bone, peach seed jig, 6375 True Sharp SS coming by Friday. Perfect lil " knivideo" to watch in anticipatory splender. You so cute!!!!!❤😘. Gunny.
Enjoyed the video, great info! On really gritty pivots I’ll use wd40, move the blades partially open to open the springs a bit, and use an air hose (or compressed air) to blow into the pivots while knife is on a towel. Amazing the gunk that blows out.
What a coincidence I get a new Case knife the same day you post this. One thing I would add is if you get a jigged bone model: use a buffer wheel or Dremel with a buffer wheel without compound on the handle. This will clean out some left over compound in the jigging. Also how am I supposed to get my own @richterknives slip if you keep filling up his books? 😂😂😂. Just kidding
Great video. I use White Lighting knife and tool lubricant. It's uses an ultra thin carrier to take a wax film into the pivots. The carrier evaporates and as you work the blades the dry wax causes the dirt an debris to shed out. I will give that KPL oil a try also.
It's an old fashioned way to produce a knife. Back when they started it was normal for manufacturers to leave a burr so you could finish sharpen to your liking. Nothing wrong with it just grab ya a good strop and some compound and work it off. Easy tip if you have a large stubborn burr cut it gently into some wood and it will pull off some of the burr.
Fun fact Case Knives have a burr Edge because it indicates that the knife is mint and has never been sharpened as soon as you sharpen the knife it is no longer Mint
Love the videos Erica You may have covered this but I would love your recommendation on pocket system for trafitionals Something light small Maybe even packable in a slip pouch ?
@@ericasedc 😊. I have feelings of nostalgia for Case since those knives were a part of my childhood and relationship with my grandfather. And I have been enjoying your channel and recommendations. You turned me on the Archie at NGMCo and his fine work. So hard to get but so good and worth the effort
I got a new Case Muskrat in CV. It's a beautiful piece. However, one of the blades is a little proud in the open position. I am not sure what to do. They say I have to file the tang a wee bit, but I don't know how to get in there without scratching the shit out of the surrounding area. I know it's a bit OCD but a blade should be flush.
@@ericasedc stopped by ktp yesterday. They had a ton of kershaws, spydercos and Benchmades and a small display of case knives. Parking was a nightmare.
I have a question, i have just got a buck 112 ,problem is when the blade is closed the tip of the knife sticks up a very tiny bit, bit if you run your finger over the tup when its closed will cut your finger. Is this normal for buck knives?
File the kick a little bit at a time till the tip tucks down in the handle. Or take advantage of bucks warranty. They’re easy to deal with and will probably just replace your knife.
I love a Mini Trapper bc of the half stops Okay so I use my ceramic rod or my Lansky Box My strop is two sided and I use Flexcut Gold and the other is hard leather I find that I can get the Spay Blade almost like a razor I mean all my blades will shave the hair off my arm but the Spay is like a Straight Razor I am too chicken to try it on my face lol I use Ballistol for my lubricant guns and knives Some of my Case Knives and LOTS of my Bear and Son Knives have come so loaded with grit that the blades were locked up and wouldn’t move till I washed the grit out with Ballistol You and I do exactly the same things to our new user knives except we use slightly different products but as my dear departed grandmother used to say Great minds think alike Love you more E
I agree with the process and the reasoning, but I do this with every new knife, even a $400 Benchmade. Maybe just a little too much shade on Case. I like to use ceramic as a touchup or final hone. Smiths used to make a variety of lengths in both fine and medium. I have a set I purchased and dated 1984. They were the top name in sharpening once upon a time. Good job and a great demonstration👍
@@ericasedc I've been carrying only budget level stuff since I started Dave Ramsey's baby steps plan just to make myself feel more broke while I crush debts. I had forgotten how much I liked traditionals until I started rocking my Buck 110 and my Bear and Son. Definitely makes me want more traditionals
For the money case charges, there is no excuse for a knife not to come sharpened properly. It should not need sharpening for a while with proper none abusive use...only stropping. Sharpening is a major task for a knife and should not be viewed as something routine. Unless it is commercial application, and even then its a major task. $20 knife? Okay, I expect it to be dull and need a sharpening to put an edge on it and if it is soft steel then sharpen more often. But $60 to $150???? Sorry, we should not except nothing less than proper sharpness from the factory.
Fine edges on Case knives roll quickly due to the steal they use they have a rougher edge due to the process you pay for hand made USA not Chinese parts assembled in USA like most benchmade knives. I put them on a strop and use them just fine
Bought a Case knife on vacation, did not check it out at the shop. Long story short, the knife had a wobbly blade when I unpackaged it. Sent the knife to Case for repair, 4 months it had not returned. I called they sent it back untounched.
I don't own any Case knives but I do have Rough riders that come the same way, they always get a blast out with metal cleaner to get the crap out, then a blade touch up and oiled! Go use your shit!!!!
hey erica , hope all is well with you , great vid , i only have email here , i am tracking down some tactical items/stuff for trade here only , if you know anybody or know any military guys , send em my way please, thanks n talk soon > tom !
I'm not gonna lie and please don't take this the wrong way. I was a little skeptical when I saw a female doing this. However I was wrong. Young lady you killed this video! She definitely knows her way around a blade and her experience showed! I learned a lot about a case factory blade and appreciate your efforts. Well done!
I hope your friend that bought that knife paid some type of factory second price for it. I would send that one back, but probably get the same thing on return. It's like Chinese made brands are looking better these days.
It is annoying that more often than not, one has to repair brand new knives from Case. I won't buy a Case knife unless I can go through a pile of them and find a "good one"...
@@WhiteTrashTennessee You're the one full of shit. There are two Case Master Dealers near me and I have bought from both of them. For every purchase, I have had to go through their stock to find a good one. On average, 8 out of 9 were badly put together. All of them have a nasty sharpening burr because Case simply refuses to put a good edge on their knives. I can sharpen a knife, but I can't fix blade wobble, off-center blades, and gaps between the scales and liners.
The 1 thing I would do with a case knife is throw it in the garbage can. They do not take pride in their work anymore. Downfall of one of the most iconic knife brands ever.
Name one thing these days that you don’t have to tune it a little when you get it home. It is because people don’t take Tate no pride in their work anymore and they have been dumbed down. It is pure and simple incompetence. BEST NOT TO RIDE ON AN AIRPLANE THESE DAYS. MASSIVE INCOMPETENCE!!!!!!!!
