Case of the time the boiler exploded with Ray inside 

Something like that can make for a very bad day. I had the exact same start up experience once years ago with a mis-wired gas valve, but fortunately for me, I discovered it before it could do damage. Luckily, the boiler room was quiet when I energized the power to the boiler and I heard the gas valve open. Not something you can hear with the blower motor running. From that day forward, I always kept the manual gas cock closest to the burner closed and never opened it until I had established a pilot and watched for proper operation.
