Case of unopened 1979 hockey cards sells for over $5M at auction

A Saskatchewan family has sold a case full of unopened 1979 O-Pee-Chee brand hockey card boxes for over $5 million. The boxes contain an unknown number of Wayne Gretzky rookie cards. Mint condition Gretzky rookie cards have been sold for $3.75 million.

That means they were not poor. $150.00 in the year 1980 would be like $750.00 in today’s dollars.

The guy who won the auction has defaulted on his promise to pay and now all parties involved are in court (seller, auction house, winner). This was an amazing find but at some point the buyer was in over his head almost like waking into a casino on house credit and want more and more credit once you have lost it all.

I weep silently every time I think of my mother unknowingly throwing away me and my brothers box of hockey cards 30+ years ago which had 7 mint Gretzky rookie cards in it.

None. I doubt people are cracking boxes but even if they did the odds of them even pulling 8s is pretty rare. Most of those cards are probably psa 5s

Ya. Trading, collector's, limited edition, and photo cards (or whatever you want to call them) are randomly packed. Depending on how it is packed, some might have an extra or 1 less (especially might be packed by hand)

Firstly, the 1979 draft was super deep, one of the best of all times. And secondly, this was the first year of the WHA-NHL merger, so there are other great hall of famers listed as "rookies." So it's safe to say that the Gretzky rookie card is probably not the only one of value in there.

@@TMLJunKyou have no idea what you are talking about. The 79 draft rookies are in the 1981 release , the following year. You have a last yr Howe, Dryden and Hull and that's it. No expensive other rookies.

If they are smart they'd open it up and say sorry just got 1. Grade it and sell it, next year sell another. Never tell them you got 10 of them you'd be screwing yourself. It certainly can be done smartly.

Someone pointed out that the gum may have affected the card it's next to - so some of the Gretzky cards may be gum damaged!

the odds of that are VERY high and VERY, VERY possible. The smart person will sell each sub-box out of the case....and never open any of them. Better a bird in the hand, then possibly two in the bush.....

If all cards in that time were evenly printed and evenly distributed, then there should be roughly 25 Gretzky cards in that entire box.

Every single card would be mint condition like the most crisp card youd ever see 😂😂😂. The other sucky part is 25 roughly of new rookies on the market which would drive the price down now over other known cards

The longer cards are pressed together they get stuck together but still what a score to fund. Without Gretzky the sets like $150 but if those cards are flawless and get graded 10s omg money money money. lol

That person must have a store owner. In that time, people would bought hockey card packages from their corner store. The average person would not buy a big box like that..

$156 for the case in 1979. I bought 3 ungraded RCs (Schmidt, Rose, Carlton) for that much in 1980 and I was 13 and working as a busboy. That ain't a lot of money for an entire case. My dad and I had this Gretzky card and unfortunately he sold it in the mid 90s to buy coins. He regretted that decision until the day he passed away in 2022.
