Get a mineral oil bucket for the steel mold. When it is still red hot like that quench it in the oil to retain its strength and prevent fracture

VERY nice vid! I was scrolling through a list of brass casting videos, and very glad I picked this to watch for my evening entertainment tonight! Appreciated seeing the different 'raw materials' you used. I pick up brass when it presents itself, also copper, and would like to start casting ingots at some point. I am retiring from my job in early 2019 and will have a Lot more time for fun stuff then! Also appreciated your replies to commenters re: the various grits you used to get that bar so very perfect, the composition of the spoon you used, etc. I've collected quite a bit of brass connectors and parts, bullet casings, also "micro-scrap" plug ends, electrical components - I should weigh it out sometime, but it all adds up, in any case. Thank you for these presentations! I appreciate you!

This is insanely awesome! You should stamp 24k on the top or something... =) Some of those brass pieces look like those I dig up metal detecting every now & then... crusty as can be and a file is the only way to tell what material they are. I dug a solid brass threaded rod about 1.5" in diameter & 12" long this past summer... just about deafened me when I detected it. Thought it was lead at first due to the weight... hit it with a file & couldn't believe it was solid brass! If you wipe the polished brass with shellac, it'll keep that bright finish for a long time as the finish is invisible, but prevents air from getting at and tarnishing the metal. (I do this with my lathe tools all the time - works with steel as well as copper, brass, etc.
@bigstackD
@bigstackD 6 лет назад
shellac aye cool ill have to look into that. Yeah my friend does a heap of metal detecting any gave me a big bucket of mixed metals he found but im yet to go through it and hell yeah that stuff is so dirty only a file and magnet could ever help.

I am not much into scrapping I just really like this channel for good reasons. Where I am lost is the value of the item. So the one brick that was made is only worth $5 USD, give or take ? Or is it valued at more then that.

Melting brass compared to pure copper may not be as fun... But the slagging sure is better! I want a bigstackd bumper sticker that says I ♥️ Slagging Brass!

you should try to cast styrofoam cup to make a good drinking cup. Add a design in pin or something and some light carving, not cutting through it of course. That's the hard part. I love to design on them. You can do so much, bit too much makes it unusable. I'd love to see that

I've seen enough of BigD's videos that I can tell how old it is by the clutter (or lack of) in his garage, and which furnace he uses.

Man has a hobby. An a lot of time on his hands. Nice collection copper, brass and lead. Needs to take time rebuilding his smelter waste of heat even for a hobby and pushing that we should recycle. Making a full size twenty five gallon smelter. The one you have waste heat that could seed up the smelting process if it held the heat a bit better. But you are a brave nut to be working with dangerous conditions. Please be careful. You are handling projects that are above the level of the tools you presently have. Using a short slag spong to remove slag at that distances with those gloves. I'm not sure you are the braves man I have ever seen or the craziest.

Yes my friend I understand your concern and I could do with an upgrade on my safety equipment I really need to stand back when removing slag and adding things to the Crucible. I am always thinking of safety first even if I don’t show it sometimes but I am very careful even if it doesn’t show that in the videos. I have a full face shield and industrial respirator I just need to upgrade on my gloves and some tools. Yes you are right I seriously need to consider rebuilding my furnace properly that’s for sure👍🏻

Here in the US, they don't give you any extra money at the scrapyard because it is shiny, or because you melted it for them.......Just sayin......
