Casting Metallic Latex Lace

Casting Latex Lace is super fun...and it's even MORE fun when we can add metallic shimmer and shine.
A few important points to keep in mind:
1. Do NOT attempt this with a Silicone Caulk. The material will bond permanently to the silicone mold, and you'll be very sad.
2. Latex Caulk is not suitable for molds that are deeper than 1/4". The latex won't cure properly, and you'll be left with a gooey mess.
3. Wipe down your tools with a paper towel prior to washing them with soap and water. You don't want gobs of latex stuck in your plumbing!
4. Use standard adhesives to apply Latex Lace to your projects. Tacky Glue is perfect for Mixed Media Applications. A good quality Wood Glue is appropriate for Furniture Applications.
{The Prima Art Ingredients Rust Mica Powder has been discontinued. Bummer. But, I link to a comparable gold mica power below.}
You'll need a few specialty items for this technique.
Here is a list of the tools and materials used in the demo:

This is absolutely AMAZING!!! I can’t recall if I’ve already commented to say that, since I keep coming back and watching this video over and over. I am IN LOVE with that gorgeous box you made in the other video I watched!! I want to make some of these boxes for gifts!! I only hope they can be half as beautiful as yours (with much practice, I’m sure!). I really had no idea there was even such a thing as latex caulk or that it could go into silicone molds. Your creations are stunningly breathtaking and inspiring!!! Also, your voice is SO soothing, which is just a bonus to watching your videos!! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise with us! @Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Hey Norine! The reason for the caulking gun is because the tinted caulk isn't available in the 'squeeze' tube size - just the big tubes. The plain white, on the other hand is available in the smaller sized tubes. So glad you enjoyed the demo, and I just know you'll have an amazing time creating Latex Lace! xox

so much easier than trying to paint the delicate pieces after. I am guessing this could be done with the Prima molds as well. TFS
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Exactly! Having them emerge 'pre-finished' from the mold is wonderful, oliveoyl64! One note about the Prima molds: they are WAY too deep to play nicely with Caulk. You can absolutely use this technique, but it would need to be with resin, polymer clay, or tinted paper clay to work well. Latex caulk has trouble curing if it is thicker than .25" or so.
@retiredandsassy
@retiredandsassy 6 лет назад
Thank you for the reminder. I have only used white resin, wonder how the powders would appear on clear?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
You can use either the white or clear resin - both will pick up the mica powders. BUT, I would stick to the white stuff, and add Alumilite Colorant to tint the resin - because any area where the powder is thin will expose the color of the resin itself. I use this stuff to tint Amazing Casting Resin (white - quick cure). Affiliate Link - amzn.to/2pSEXT9

Thank you for sharing this!! So great! I want to try every mold (and have already ordered several)! Love that you can make it metallic or paint it! My books are going to have a whole new look! Question: I have made some with one of your beautiful lacy molds and rolled it up on a paper towel roll with the towels between the layers. How long will it stay flexible like that? Do I need to use it within a certain time period? Or store it air tight? Thanks so much!! Donna 💕
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Hi Donna! I'm so excited that you've embarked on your Latex Lace adventures! Adding them to books is one of my favorite applications...That is awesome! As far as I can tell, the castings remain flexible indefinitely. I store mine rolled up in parchment paper, but exposed to the air, and even after months of storage, they remain as flexible as the day they were cast. I'm a little concerned that with humidity, your castings might want to bond with the porous paper towels. If this happens, you should be able to immerse them in water in order to soak off the paper toweling...but my recommendation would be to store them in between non porous papers instead.

I love this process Heather but i find these to be very easily ripped after. Is this normal? I was planning to use these in costuming- i might go ahead and get liquid latex instead of caulking. Have you tried to use these as trims in clothes?

Love it! What glue do you recommend to adhere the latex lace to the exterior of a candle holder? Will this with stand the heat from candle?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 5 лет назад
Hey Lourdes! I love the sound of your idea - and the caulk should tolerate the heat from a candle flame without too much difficulty. The real issue is the adhesive! I recommend a clear heat-resistant silicone as adhesive for applying Latex Lace to the exterior of a candle holder. Apply it sparingly and carefully to the back of the lace, then press in place carefully. You may want to hold the lace in place with a low-tack tape while the silicone cures. Allow it to cure according to the manufacturers instructions, then carefully remove the tape. Here's a link to the silicone I would choose: amzn.to/2CJVa4K

you said "don't use a silkon caulk", but the acrylic-latex you use is with silikon...this is not a problem?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Hey, Karin! Great question. Confusing, right? 🙄 The amount of silicone in this formulation of DAP caulk is negligible. There ARE caulking materials that have high levels of silicone - these are the problematic ones.

Hey miss Heather, this looks like so much fun! I purchased some molds and the "Alex fast dry acrylic latex caulk + silicone" in white. Got a question - i've a dark bronze caulk labeled "Dynaflex 230", it's a DAP product. On the back of the label it states, it's a "premium latex sealant". It goes onto say - with the performance characteristics of non-industrial "acetoxy silicone product", is this one safe for my molds? Thanx hun.
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Hi Laurie! Since I haven't worked with the Dynaflex product here's my recommendation: apply a small amount of it to the backside of your silicone mold (a smear). Allow it to cure, then attempt to peel it off of the surface. This test will give you the answer! If it's difficult to remove: Nope. If it peels right off: YAY! I'd be grateful if you'd report you findings here, so we can all benefit. Thanks Laurie! xox

When choosing a caulk for thin lace molding, must it be Alex brand?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Hi Pamela! No, you don't have to use the DAP Alex - it just performs beautifully, my friend. The most important thing is that the caulk be primarily Latex in composition, flexible, and paintable. Use whatever caulk you have available, as long as it is not predominantly Silicone in composition, it should be just fine! 😃
@mariale-bron9034
@mariale-bron9034 6 лет назад
Hi, What is the difference between silicone caulk and latex caulk with silicone? I have all purpose caulk- can I use that for the molds?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Hi Maria! Silicone caulk is made from MOSTLY silicone, and it will NOT work. It will bond permanently to the mold, and make you cry! 😭 Latex Caulk + Silicone is made MOSTLY from latex (with just a tiny amount of silicone added), and is the perfect choice for this work. But, if you read the label of your all purpose caulk and can tell that it is mostly LATEX, you will probably have good results, my friend. Hope this helps! xox

Can this be used on furniture and if so what product can you use to attach it
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Hi Jill! Great question...and the answer is: Absolutely! One of the most popular uses for Latex Lace is as Furniture Appliques. I like to apply a good quality wood glue to painted furniture surfaces using a brush, then gently press the lace into place. Clear Gorilla Glue ( affiliate link: amzn.to/2pROuum ) is a good choice, but may have a higher sheen than you would like. It's perfect for painted surfaces that have a satin or glossy finish. Titebond Translucent is a good choice for furniture, as well. Stronger than many wood glues, and dries clear without developing much sheen. ( affiliate link: amzn.to/2pTZ5VD ) Be sure to seal your Metallic Latex Lace to avoid transferring Mica Powder to the surface of your piece.

Most of my furniture work was done before I began focusing on Mixed Media, and creating videos - so no, I don't have any furniture videos 😭. (That may change in the future, because I have a LOT of pieces to rehab in my inventory and am designing a new studio space) BUT, here's a link to a lot of the furniture blog posts I created for The Graphics Fairy while I was an Ambassador for Heirloom Traditions Paint: thegraphicsfairy.com/?s=heirloom+traditions
