Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (Saturn) Playthrough [English] 

A playthrough of Sega's Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse as it appeared in the 1998 Sega Saturn title, Sega Ages: I Love Mickey Mouse.

This entry in the Sega Ages line-up features ports of two the first two games in the "I Love Mickey Mouse" Genesis/Mega Drive series: the classic Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse ( • Castle of Illusion Sta... ) and its direct sequel, QuackShot Starring Donald Duck ( • QuackShot Starring Don... ).
Castle of Illusion was easily the best Mickey game yet when it showed up at the end of 1990. Mickey Mousecapade for the NES ( • Mickey Mousecapade (NE... ) was good, but this was some next-level stuff. It took full advantage of Sega's 16-bit hardware to deliver graphics closer to cartoon quality and more saccharine sweet than had been seen before in a console game, and the gameplay nailed the flow and feel of tried-and-true 80s hop-n-bop action.
The Saturn release didn't do anything to update the original, but the port is faithful to the point of being indistinguishable from the Genesis game. It runs smoothly, the controls are spot-on, and the FM music and sound effects are accurate - it's not at all wonky like Sega's later Genesis rereleases from the Dreamcast onward that relied on sub-par emulation.
But on any platform, as far as Mickey games go, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse sits right up there with Capcom's The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse ( • The Magical Quest Star... ) at the top of the pile.
