In early 2020, HGTV announced plans for an exciting new project: Erin and Ben Napier of "Home Town" would lead a team of renovation pros as they takeover and makeover an entire small town. Hundreds, if not thousands, of small towns and villages answered the call, including Castleton-on-Hudson, NY. This is the video portion of the submission created by the Castleton-on-Hudson Main Street Association.
We love our village mightily and know that the HGTV team will be met by a community with arms wide open. Our little village of 1400 souls stands ready to fully realize our potential. Our warm and friendly village is just 10 minutes from downtown Albany, surrounded by farmland, with a state park and campground five minutes away, an award-winning school district and stunning views of the Hudson River. (We are currently barred access from this spectacular treasure by Amtrak, but we will continue the fight for our right to get to the water until we win.) Our Main Street has the potential to be a perfect location for small business owners or investors with vision and creativity. All are welcome here. Come for a visit; stay for a lifetime. As the signal flags on our nautical flagpole spell out seasonally: WELCOME HOME.

Thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane. Although I now live far away, I recall with fondness the elementary school, bank, car dealership and town hall.

Wow, your love letter to Castleton-on-Hudson brought tears to my eyes. I've been thinking about moving there, and along with other factors, your essay has clinched it - there's no place like home. Thank you.

Thank you Mrs Stone for that trip back to my childhood. I'm a '59 model year person that remembers many of the long gone buildings and people. I moved away in the 80's but now return to visit when the new Schodack Landing State Park is open. Your account was heart warming to me and the friends I've shared the clip with. Thank you for being you.

Thanks for the video. I spent the first 27 years of my life there. Great friends and families. Our Sacred Heart Church was beautiful. The school, all the cool bars, Trianni’s Pizza...great memories.

This was awesome! I wish the village was picked!! Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s even then there was still a glimmer of what main st was in its true heyday!! Having just recently “come back home” after being away for 20 years, I love all the efforts to improve our little village!

went to Castleton Elementary School started in 1958. The "former bank" @ 3:19 was The Dime Savings Bank, where my parents had an account. There used to be a "Buster Brown" shoe store on Main, near a pizza parlor run my the Vito family, if I remember correctly.

Inspiring production. Thank you. I've traveled the 9J route for years wondering how could this little village rise again. I became familiar with many of the residents when performing at Mahar's Irish Pub on Main...since closed...prayers are with your cause.

At 27 seconds in: turn left on that street, then the first left went very steeply up the hill. I often wanted to take my bike DOWN that hill, but never had the nerve.

It does suck being so close to the Hudson when it's striper season with no way to walk down to the river. Schodack island is a bit too far to walk with fishing gear. If someone made an effort to build a walkway over the train track I'd kick in $5000 to try to make that happen.

I owned a building on Main St and had a bead store. The Village did nothing to assist in making my business thrive. They argued with the state about plowing parking and an entire week went by without any parking on the street. There was money available for rehab, but not available to me. I tried to get others excited about the village and everyone felt defeated. I watched other businesses fail, until I finally gave up. It's a shame as it is an idyllic location.

I’m sorry to hear you had to give up that attempt. I think of you and your shop every time I use the tote bag I got from you when you first opened! (Barbara Calabrese) Another problem is the local perception of it being a high crime area (something like 250 parcels in the Village, but almost all of the Town of Schodack shared the mailing address. The public reading all of the police blotter events daily will never reduce the perception of high crime, when the Village is really a tiny section of the Town but takes the bad rap for the whole place. It’s literally why I gave up on the Village. I hope things are well with you now.

Dear Mrs. Stone and the Main St Association, could you please provide me with some more information about the performing arts space potential you mentioned in your heartfelt letter? I am a professional in theatre arts and dance, having taught at the college level for several years now... as both an educator and an artist I am interested in the vision for this space. This town in general has so much incredible potential, and your letter has moved me to see if I can contribute in any way. I currently reside in the Pacific Northwest, but I am moving within a few miles of Castleton-on-Hudson in about a year from now and I'm looking to connect with community. Thanks for your time.

The biggest downfall of Castleton was the state of NY tearing down riverside brownstones and homes on north main street to widen a road that did not require widening and then cutting off the village from the river by allowing amtrac to fence it off. as a kid we used to go over to the river and i knew so many people living on North main. All is now gone.

Do any of the historical brownstones still exist?
