We've been looking forward to more news on the upcoming Castlevania Anniversary Collection since it was revealed to be coming to the Switch and is also on the Ps4 Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
The good news is that it's available right now on the Switch eShop, and includes the following eight titles:
Castlevania (1987, NES)
Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest (1988, NES)
Castlevania: The Adventure (1989, Game Boy)
Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse (1990, NES)
Kid Dracula (1990, NES)
Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge (1991, Game Boy)
Super Castlevania IV (1991, SNES)
Castlevania Bloodlines / New Generation / Vampire Killer (1994, Mega Drive)
There's more good news, however; Konami has listened to feedback for its recent Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection and has decided to include the option to play the Japanese versions of these games. This will come in the form of a free update, and will cover the whole range of 'Anniversary Collection' titles:
+ Arcade Classics: Adding ability to play compatible titles in vertical orientation on Nintendo Switch™ - also known as Tate mode
+ Arcade Classics / Castlevania / Contra: Adding the option to play Japanese ROMs of relevant titles on all platforms
+ Castlevania / Contra: Adding the ability to select between Japanese and English scans of the Bonus Book

Max, fix your review, dude. The game does have save states. People are getting all worked up about it not having them. When the ability to save and load is right there in the pause menu.

I've got my fingers crossed for remakes for Silent Hills' 1,2 and (my favorite) 3. With all the outcry, fan remakes of P.T. and the success of the RE2 Remake, I think the odds of it happening are getting better and better.

The fact that Konami is also adding the Japanese versions in a free update is icing on the cake for this compilation. I can't wait to play the Japanese version of Dracula's Curse due to the much better sounding soundtrack.

Simon's Quest would also benefit from the upgrade. Originally it was a Famicom disk game which featured one additional sound channel. That doesn't sound like a lot on paper, but if you listen two the NA vs. JP versions side by side you will notice the difference.

Lane Plain I was thinking of the the resident evil games. They released re4 on the switch but it was 30 dollars. I love re4 but this is ridiculous since I can go buy re4 on the ps4 for just 10 dollars.

Patrick PFC yeah, thats a thing that happens a lot when a game is on a Switch and PS4. I still don’t get why, but I’m guessing its because these titles are just now coming to Switch while they’ve been on the PS4 for years. Either way it should still be priced down. The FFX HD ports are $50 on Switch and $20 on PS4...

They already released a Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night collection called Requiem. Basically it's Dracula X Chronicles from the PSP without the 2.5 D version of Rondo. Unfortunately it's currently a PS4 exclusive

anthonyspecf sotn would be so much better if they could bypass the whole dying and reloading loop that takes like 5 minuets. I don’t know if it’s still as bad on modern consoles but I had it on the Vita and the reload loop killed it for me.

Parody games are a big deal in Japan. I think it’s really cool they released Kid Dracula in the collection. You implying they chose it over a GBA game is not a good take, in my opinion. Having made games myself, I know that lots of “extras” would purely not exist if the team didn’t work “extra” to include them on top of what was planned.

Not perfect but close. They need to fix the issue on Castlevania 1's second level where there's a constant random high pitch noise. They also need to add a control customization option. The first 3 games have bad mappings, which you're unfortunately stuck with on Switch since it doesn't have a universal mapping option in the system's OS.

Oh yeah, I noticed that high pitch noise in stage 2 (I recently did a full playthrough on Castlevania 1 in the collection), I hope the upcoming update not just adds the JPN versions of the games, I REALLY hope they allow to change the controller settings for all games (well, Bloodlines controller settings was pretty much the only one with good setup).

I love that they keep the slowdown and stuff, and CAN do that, effectively, with these games. That truly preserves the game that is then called a classic. When I play a classic to check it out, I want to play what people were actually talking about.

I had the Japanese version of Kid Dracula back in the day and loved it. It's a never released game, and deserves to be there. Pretty cool, very entertaining. And they are obviously keeping the classic gameplay, instead of the metroidvania ones.

I absolutely don't get this! WHY on Earth haven't they put the Game Boy Color versions of Castlevania Adventure and Belmont's Revenge in the collection? They were released on the compilation cartridges called Konami Collection Vol. 1 and Vol. 4 back in the day and the colorization was great! It should have at least been an option! And where the heck is Castlevania Legends? Or the Game Boy version of Kid Dracula for that matter?

Adventure also had an amazing remake on the Wii eshop in the form of Adventure:Rebirth. Would have been awesome to have that version instead of the GB one, especially now that the Wii eshop has been shut down

You can change the settings for the Game Boy games to put them in their Super Game Boy/Game Boy Color look, and also you can put the OG Game Boy look as well.

Very pleasantly surprised by this collection! The rare game that is Kid Dracula *to me* is like the cherry on top - I'd been trying to download the ROM *_everywhere_* on the internet, ever since I learned of its existence and saw gameplay of it, but I just couldn't find it, kept on hitting dead ends. Really glad they included it. Satisfied by the positive review! ;)

Don't fret anyone. If you don't like your button configuration setup for some of these Castlevania games you can remap your buttons in the PS4 settings. I had no clue you could do this. That is awesome.

Ahhh my world is destroyed....like the crack of a whip when killing a vamp. - but all kidding aside i mentioned it because it would have completed the set for the gb. If they wanted they could go era by era, hear is the GB’s then a download boom we now the GBA’s. It would have worked for the people whom want a done set. Also kid Dracula doesn’t fall in any set of the timeline, that’s y I was saying it would have been better to have the hole set rather than two from one and then this one. Double heck if they were gonna do kid D once again they should have done the GB for the fact that it was released to the US and the version the put was not. Regardless castlevania for life

Only one on the Game Boy where you play as a girl you mean. Don't forget there's also Castlevania: Order Of Ecclesia on DS where Shanoa is the main character, Portrait Of Ruin on DS allows you to switch to Charlotte anytime, Castlevania 64/Legacy Of Darkness that has Carrie Fernandez, and you can also play as Maria in Rondo Of Blood and some sections with Sypha in Castlevania 3. There's actually quite a lot of female heroes in the Castlevania timeline.

I get a lot of castlevania fans are kinda upset kid dracula is here, but I don't see how else they would've released it, and I'm happy it's finally in english. Retro translations like this from the original companies behind them should happen more often.

@1:35 Kid Dracula was released in both Japan and the U.S. The U.S version was censored, they took out religious references. There's a RU-vid video on censorship games describing the differences between the two. Another game that was censored was Ninja Saviors for the SNES. The U.S version, they took out the enemy girl robots and replaced them with guy ones.

You forgot to mention, and this is a HUGE deal for me, that they switched up the controls. For example, in ALL the megaman collections for ps4 X is jump and square is shoot your megabuster (just like on snes). Here, X is shoot and square is jump. AND YOU CANT CHANGE THIS. This is just like the megaman x collection on gamecube where they fucked up the controls and you could not switch it back. My brain just cant process the x is shoot and square is jump, and it makes all of the games unplayable. But wait, there is more! In bloodlines and C4 X is jump and square is shoot! So they did it right for 2 games on the whole collection. Cant believe you didnt mention this dreamcastguy.

Well, in X Collection for Game Cube you HAD to change the control scheme INSIDE the games, the issue was Anniversary Collection were B was jump and A shoot for some weird reason (obviously if you use a backup you can patch the game to fix that, because other than that is impossible to change controller settings), for now without the controller settings for every game (minus Super Castlevania 4 and Bloodlines) I stick with using triangle for attack and circle to jump or pretend that I'm playing Ninja Gaiden 1, 2 or 3 for the NES in their SNES ports (those games on SNES had the same bogus issue with the controller scheme).

I just looked it up and you can remap your button configuration in the PS4 settings in the accessibility options. I never knew you could remap ps4 buttons. You can switch the square and x buttons around for the original 3 Castlevania games. That is damn good news. 😊

They didn't switch up the controls. Just like on the NES and Gameboy, the button on the right (Circle on PS4) jumps and the button on the left (X on PS4) attacks. They should have included customizable controls though.

I'm actually pretty surprised that the box arts in the eBooks still have the seal of Nintendo, and the names of the consoles. I mean, this is in PS4, and seeing Nintendo's label in a PS4 is pretty surprising.

Pretty sure that Kid Dracula released in the U.S back in the day. It is way more metroidvania than these other castlevania games here. It’s not bad but I had no idea it was in the castlevania series. I’d really love to see a elder scrolls anthology for consoles.

A little note for ps4 users: the ps store kinda hides it a bit for whatever reason. It didnt show up when i searched for it and it wasnt featured anywhere. I found it under the new games list below stuff thats been out for a bit oddly enough. Maybe that was my own stupidity though.

Yeah I got many digital copies of little anniversary collections. I got Castlevania, Contra, mega Man, Capcom arcade stadium 1 and 2. My favorite installment on Castlevania will always be super Castlevania. To this day that damn game still gives me a great challenge

After getting Advanced Remastered Collection I am now hoping for a DS Remastered Collection, as well as a re-release of SOTN. Konami have been sort of bringing back old franchises (a la MGS) so hopefully we see some more Castlevania love

Instead of Kid Dracula, they should have put in Castlevania Legends, the third and last GB game. Or Dracula X. Basically, they should have put all the pre-Metroidvania games in there. Collection 2 can be the Metroidvania-style, item-maze games that started with Symphony of the Night and Circle of the Moon.

On your Metroidvania comment: great as it is in and by itself, I think the franchise went south after Symphony of the Night became all the rage. It never quite had that dark, medieval feeling mixed with a special level of simple charm, catchy and atmospheric tunes, interesting level design and hard as nails and straightforward gameplay of the old games again.

I have Konami's Collector Series, and it features Castlevania 1-3. At this rate, we won't have all the games until 2 more collections and 20 years more. :(

glad you mentioned circle of the moon, that was the first one us poor 90's kids had lmao. but hey if they make a second collection with all the hand held games and sotn then as a pair they would be a sick collection. I love Bloodstained, i just wish there was more of them, or more castlevanias, i feel like right when developers get the formula right they get sick of making the games lmao. like Super Mario World, Super Metroid, SM64..etc but at least castlevania is a series that has quite a few games in the SOTN style. I would like to see more games like metroid fusion, and circle of the moon. Im surprised they havent tapped into that market more, they let it die off so hard hollow knight had to take the throne. (and with hollow knight 2 coming out i think it will retain the throne for the next 5 years at least)

"Castlevania NES version" in the Castlevania Anniversary Collection has two nasty bugs that still haven't gotten fix from both PC and Switch(referring to the crash bug in the pre-hallway reaching to Death and the crash bug when facing the Final Boss with the cross.) Either way the GBA games are being added and yet no "Castle Legends" or "Kid Dracula (GB, Sequel)".

The fact that Kid Dracula never got a release outside of Japan is actually not true. As if I remember correctly, there was a Gameboy port. The Famicom Version, though, was never seen outside of Japan. Other than that very minor nitpick, Great video!!

I'm enjoying it. Disappointed it wasn't released on disk,but I took my ps4 to a neighbor's house to download it since he has wifi,and I'm not regretting it. Really got me hooked on old Castlevania again,and I really like all the extra features. Well worth the money compared to alot of lacking titles on ps4 right now that don't have the magic these games do. Volume 2 release on disk and give us N64 Castlevanias and Gameboy Advance and Ds games. That would be terrific. The new save feature really breathes new life and fun into these games,because they are quite hard and being forced to repeat levels is really annoying,like in older releases.

I didn't think SotN would be on this collection simply because they just released it in a different package exclusive to the PS4. And I can only imagine that since it's Konami we're talking about, once it's exclusivity ends (if it ever does), it'll be one extra thing to sell.

Have to admit, I was really lucky as a kid. Never had a ton of money and games were pretty limited. Mom I'm sure accidentally got me some absolute classics including Castlevania Bloodlines.

I was scared hearing about this collection, due to the fact so many ports of old 8 and 16 bit games suffer from button lag. many times only noticeable by people who religiously played the games in the 80s. megaman anniversary has it. but it's not quite game breaking. the nes and SNES mini has button lag that's game breaking to me, especially for games like Mario. so I was worried. I bought on xbox with the idea I would test it for an hour and decide if I'd ask for a refund. put a password for level 8-1 in CV3 to check reaction time and the lag....I hit jump and whip once and realized.... FLAWLESS. damn near flawless! I am SO pumped now for the contra anniversary

Was going to pick this up day 1 but the pricing in Mexico for this is outrageous. 34.99 USD, which is almost twice what it costs in US. Thought it was a mistake on the Nintendo Switch shop but checked the price on Microsoft Marketplace and it's the same. Gonna have to wait for a pretty significant sale before picking this up.

M2 does A LOT of games. Though, they focus more on arcade games. Shoot em Ups mostly. They also did the Genesis Mini. M2 is a treasure for us arcade fans and fans of classic gaming. Look up their work. They're amazing!

I almost bought this the other day, but I realized between the NES Classic, SNES Classic, Genesis Mini, and a physical copy of Castlevania 3, I have everything in it minus the gameboy games or kid dracula. Though to be honest, I never really played these games beyond just a few minutes, and it is something I really mean to do at some point.

If I had to ask, is the European version of Castlevania Bloodlines (Castlevania: The New Generation) included, or is it just the North American version? (Not counting the Japanese version through an update) Also, why didn’t they include the Famicom Disk System versions of the first 2 games or Castlevania: Rondo of Blood? They could have as well as for the latter, add both Japanese original and English translation on the compilation. Other than that, that’s all. Awesome video. Hope best for future videos.

Um there ARE savestates bro, press lz on switch or menu button on other consoles and you can save and load, dk if you can have more than 1 savesrate tho but i guess the one is more than enough to do the job

I think that rather than DLC, I think it would be cooler to see a 2nd collection release with a handful of other titles. Also, I hope this is successful (I imagine it will be)... I would love for Konami to release other collections like this... especially since they own Hudson Soft.

I actually don't mind Kid Dracula. It's nice that they've finally released the original version outside of Japan. I still find it odd they didn't go with the Gameboy version that plays better. That all being said, I agree that aesthetically it doesn't go with the rest. If the major theme of this was to make it mostly old school, and to add in a Japan exclusive, then why not Vampire Killer for the MSX? That way you could compare Vampire Killer to Castlevania 1.

saying "gameboy version that runs better " is just plain stupid. they arent the same game, the gameboy one is a sequel, and the nes version is far bigger and runs just fine, the only things ill say about the nes version is because of how big it is, it slows down at times and sprites do flicker, but besides that the nes game is far superior

So I already own Castlevania 1, 2 and 4 for various consoles. I don't particularly care for The Adventure and I wish they would have given us the Wii remake instead. 3, bloodlines and Kid Dracula will probably be the reason why I would get this in the first place, but I may wait until the price drops in that case.

Kid Dracula was released as an unlockable title in the Castlevania Chronicles for PSP. This is not it's first official locolaizaiton outside of japan (although it is it's first release outside of japan where it's initially playable).

I HIGHLY recommend this collection IF u know anything about the Castlevania series OR if u even like ONE of the Castlevania games since the series was born. It costs $20 or less, so this is Konami's way of saying "thank u for all that hard earned money u have spent on us, we went ahead and put this collection together and are only charging u the lawful licenses fees, because the time we spent creating and packaging it is FREE!"

7/10 for me. They’re good retro games but are outshined by the more modern Bloodstained games thx to a myriad of gameplay refinements and additions. The music pales in comparison a little but for me gameplay is king.

So classic Castlevania. Sounds good to me. I haven't played the Castlevania Metroid like games, hopefully they'll do a part 2 with metroidvania games like how Capcom did for the Megaman games past the nes.
