Medusa was a Gorgon, not a Naga. A Naga is middle eastern Indian lore, Gorgons are Greek, if I recall properly. Naga do not have the ability to turn others to stone, most Gorgons did (I think). Figured I'd clear that up a little.

Medusa was hardly even a Gorgon, she wasn't immortal and a lot of stories say she had a different mother and father than the other two gorgons and was basically just mentioned in the same breath after Poseidon cursed her. Also, fun fact, but Naga is the masculine form, Nagi or Nagini is the female form (that's why Voldemort's female pet snake is named that) so it was redundant for Arin to call it a male Naga. Naga lore definitely originates from India and spread to just about every bordering region, all the way to Malaysia.

The Naga was supposed to be Medusa, but Nintendo of America removed her boobs and called her a Snake Man or something similar in the manual.

If you check most castlvania sites dedicated to cv3 they clear that up. its a mistranslation sorta how sypha is supposed to be a woman but they say him when your asked whether she can join you or not. there are also two versions of this game .one where at the end if you play with sypha they show and explain how Trevor and her end up living together as a couple. in the other version that part is taken out completely.

"This part was so hard for me to beat yesterday, and now I'm making it look like a cakewalk," is the very definition of what play castlevania is. When you don't know the patterns, it's super hard and seems impossible to beat. Then once you've played through the level enough to know where everything spawns, and what the bosses attack patterns are, you can practically sleep through it.

I agree. With Sonic 06, I just run it in the background while listening to them talk. With this series on the other hand, I watch it very attentively and really listen. Watching them overcome a challenge, while actually talking about gaming is much better than mindless banter.

The slight range increase over castlevania 1 in the whip and axe, as well as the MUCH more forgiving health meter where basic mooks don't hit you like the boss does, makes this a much more relaxing ride.

Jon got freaking good at this, good to see. Funny thing about that jumpy autoscrolling is that there is totally regular-ass smooth autoscrolling on another level in the game. There's a ton of variety to the levels.

Hey Jon. Protip. Sypha is REEEEALLY good for these segments when you get the right powerups. Try starting Level 6 with Sypha and getting her Ice powerup (normally holy water for others chars), and try using the Ice magic on the waterfall in that level. You want revolutionary NES techniques? That's about as good as it gets. :D

The Castlevania videos may not be the funniest videos from the Game Grumps, but in my opinion, they are so far the most entertaining ones. Please, Arin, Jon, Barry, I always love you hating on games and talking about non-topical stuff, but once in a while playing the game like you would when you play it alone is a nice change also. Both kind of videos can be very entertaining. Sonic 06 has proven it for funny stuff. This proves it for actual gaming stuff.

The pattern isn't erratic. There is actually a specific mathematical term for the kind of wave pattern they're following, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it is.

Did you know in the Japanese version of the game, Grant's default weapon is an infinite use of the Dagger special item? In the American version it's a dopey little knife stab. Japanese Grant is probably the most useful party member because of that. Also, in the Japanese version, every enemy deals a specific amount of damage. In the American version, they all deal the same damage, but as you progress, they start universally dealing more and more damage, so you die in fewer hits.

From how Jon talks about this game, it reminds me of Dark Souls. The game will punish you severely for making the smallest mistakes, and the bosses are actually super easy, once you discover all of their attack patterns and gimicks. Not to mention the fact that the games are both rage inducing.

I'm glad they returned to this game. It's basically an improved CV1, the only bad thing about it is that some levels are frustratingly hard (the level with the falling blocks comes to mind).

Nagas are snake beings with (mostly) human faces. Lamia are usually females (though they can be male) with serpentine lower bodies. They sometimes have other snake features, such as fangs, forked tongues, reptile eyes, or even claws. The snake-haired "Medusa" here is traditionally called a Gorgon. Medusa was one of three sisters who were either born like that, or was transformed into that shape as a curse by Athena; theGoddess caught her and Poseidon getting it on in her temple (myth varies).

The Axe Armors aren't really easier in Castlevania III. They take fewer hits, but they're trickier to deal with because a standing whip shot doesn't destroy a low axe, and ducking doesn't protect from a high axe. They're more interesting enemies in Castlevania III, I think.

It could also depend if Gorgons are considered as full-on mammals or full-on reptiles, because if they're the latter, they wouldn't be able to produce milk and therefore have no need for mammary glands.

I beat this game once last year,and I must say that john played really well in both castlevanias.It's true, in the first time you play it the game is way more harder,I repeated this levels so many times that I still remember part of these levels.

I see Jon was using his AVGN knowledge during that tower where the screen slowly ascends when he was predicting the knights appearing right at the top of the stairs. At least, I'm pretty sure that was brought to attention during AVGN's review of Castlevania III...

My problem with this game is, that if you screw up, you have to repeat a lot more levels, than in the first one. Some stages have 5-6 levels in them. And the grim reaper and dracula fights are pretty much impossible.

I think it's awesome seeing how good you've gotten at this game and your thoughts on how hard it was to get good at. Maybe I'm just biased because of how much I love this game. Still, Grumps + CV3 is an awesome for me. I was sad to see you quit so fast in September, so I'm really happy about this.

There was something special where the knife fell though. If you broke the lantern as sypha you would have gotten the fire spell and the spells REALLY fucking help.

Yeah, true. Castlevania, at least the older ones, was all about taking your time, figuring out the best way around things, and trying to find the best solution to take minimal damage - kind of like how Arin describes the first one as one that punishes you for blowing through the game without stopping to assess the situation. :)

I agree COMPLETELY. I liked this series to begin with and was a little upset when they put it down at first, although it was a little tedious with how much they were struggling, and I don't mind that Jon's a little more trained up for this run. Also, yeah, that's especially how I felt about the Castlevania I playthrough, it was very serious for a GG series, but that wasn't a bad thing, especially since it's such an awesome classic game.

Gorgons weren't all the same, though. The snake hair and "turn to stone" schtick was just Medusa, I believe.
