Castlevania III Dracula's Curse: If You Have a Clock - PART 11 - Game Grumps 

Despite not finishing, this Grump series is very underrated.

Man, if ever there was a series I wished they finished.

The idea that Jon punches "Castlevania III is hard" into a search engine, not to confirm that it's hard for himself, but just *to tell the search engine that he thinks so* is a hilarious idea

When I was 5 I remember repeatedly fighting Death; I won and felt such excitement and joy... Then he morphed to his second form and terrified me. I wouldn't touch Castlevania again for over 10 years.

The Jon surrogate mother bit is one of the most disgusting/hilarious things I've ever heard. I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard at something.

The main thing that's creepy about the skull is that it doesn't look like a normal, human skull, but a bit off.

For several years, at the start of the year, I have this tradition of beating the same 7 NES games. On the first day, I start with Double Dragon II, Viper & Strider. On days 2, 3 & 4, it is Super Mario Brothers 1, 2 & 3. For some reason, I had a little added difficulty with Super Mario Brothers 3 this year. I was dying in places where I don't ever remember dying before. So all that is left is Castlevania III. Level 9 Is absolutely brutal! It can take me several tries just to get to the doppelgänger, and when I finally reach him, it is instant death. After spending half of the game's time on level 9, or about the 4th time I reach the doppelgänger, I finally beat him using Sypha's flames. It is all a mixture of luck and standing in the right place. I have become fairly smooth on all the previous levels, and level 9 usually pretty easy for me. But last year, I lucked out and got through 9 quickly and had a little more trouble than usual with the very last level. For over 2 weeks, this game has been next in line for me, but I keep putting it off because I have to be in the right mood for undue frustration on level 9.

Its crazy that Jon mentioned googling how hard a game is when youre pissed at it because Castlevania 3 is one of the games I distinctly remember doing that for. I found a forum talking about the hardest castlevania game of all time and half the guys were arguing for this game and the other half were arguing for Chronicles. Other games I remember doing that for are the late levels in Battletoads and Holy Diver.

This game is like 10x more difficult than the first one. Idk why that one gets all the credit for being difficult

You think this is the hardest level in the game? Try taking Alucard's path. You essentially took the easy path. Level 7 of Alucards path is definitely the hardest. Look it up if you don't believe me.

I don't know if level 9 is the hardest level ever, but it is definitely a hell of a hard level. That last section with the birds and the Fishmen has killed me so many times!

I've beaten the original Castlevania many times as a kid, hard ass game, everyone knows it. I've never played this one, but from what I've heard CV1 and CV3 and generally equal in difficulty(I've heard some people say CV3 is slightly harder than the original but I wouldnt know) so I gotta say Jon getring this far in ONE OF the hardest (good quality) NES games makes me happy. That, plus Arin beatIng Ninja Gaiden, also known as one of the hardest NES games clearly proves to me that neither of these two suck at video games. Yes, there are certain games they suck at, but everyone has games they suck ass at when they play it for the first time, and when you grow up with an NES and a SNES and arent quite as used to 3d games like Mario 64 or OoT because you're used to there predecessor's in 2D, then OF COURSE they arent going to not be all that great at them(I'm more talking about Arin atm, people shit on him all the time for being shit at games but he really doesn't suck, I'd say overall he is above average at video games. And not to pat myself on the back, but I feel like I'm pretty damb good at video games in general, but if I played Zelda OoT right now I'd probably be shit at it for a good while. Because, like Arin, I grew up with an NES and SNES as a kid and wrecked some games that are known as some of the hardest in video game history, but if I put up video of me sucking at OoT people would draw the conclusion that I just suck at video games. Basically what I'm trying to say is that Arin plays a lot of games nowadays on Game Grumps that A.) he has never played before B.) might not be his cup of tea when it comes to styles of video games he likes, and C.) HE IS TALKING AND TRYING TO BE ENTERTAINING throughout the whole time which REALLY does make it harder to focus on playing. But because Arin wants to give his fans what they want ro see, he plays these games that he isnt that great at, then he gets shit on for sucking. I bet people wouldnt think Arin sucks at video games if he played what he ACTUALLY wants to play, games he's good at (like his Mega Man X solo playthrough without using any abilities you get and what not, and making it to the very end is very impressive and could NOT be done by someone who sucks at video games, same with him bearing Ninja Gaiden.

The key is for the controls and tutorials to be intuitive so that any kind of tutorial naturally flows. This also applies to mechanics introduced at a later part of a game, like having an encounter with a normal enemy that acts similarly to an upcoming boss so that you know what to do when you see the boss.

Was this the last episode that Jon and arin played together?

The fast-forwarded Dopple-ganger fight looked like some sort of colourful dance.

This clock, 0-speed time in Braid, Mom's Contacts in The Binding of Isaac, and The Sandman bat in Team Fortress 2: enemy-freezing tools are the best.

I've been playing Castlevania III and I'm really enjoying figuring out the "MAYTA" character/sub-weapon selection. I feel Sypha's much better on the water screen of this level due to her faster/more vertical basic attack. She's even better if you get the ice spell from the elevating room. She also gets the "three orbs" spell on the water screen, which is pretty good for killing this stage's boss, which I'm glad of because I didn't watch to use the character switch trick (it seems a bit cheap).

The new AVGN was hilarious. I loved Kyle Justin's little songs throughout. Loved.

It's a huge pet peeve of mine when they say NES like that.

Wow XD I google "why is this hard" all the time! Gosh... Pokemon Stadium on 64 -_- ...you basically never win unless you have a game boy and you buy the adapter to move your super pokeys into the N64. If u don't have that, GOOD LUCK WITH THE RENTAL POKEMON! Eats shoe*

The boss exploit was both amazing and hilarious. XD That was so cool, but I just laughed when I saw it.

They brought it back in Order of Ecclesia, I almost cried with happiness.

It depends on the game, really. Some games don't need tutorials because they have simple controls and simplistic gameplay. If you were playing Castlevania or Elite Beat Agents or Mega Man, you don't need to be taught how to play because it's obvious what to do. However, a game with less traditional gameplay, like Ghost Trick or Phoenix Wright have different gameplay elements or controls which can't just be picked up without knowing beforehand. It doesn't mean they're bad games.

Damn it, Jon! Every single time I decide to eat while watching GameGrumps you do this.

Antichamber is designed around exploring and figuring things out for yourself, and also Antichamber's controls are really simple.

Also, the best way to kill this boss (in my opinion, of course), is using Syfa's...ball spell (i don't know, the thing that you get with Syfa instead of the cross), once you get to the boss room, just keap walking to the left and jump to the plataform at your top left (get as close at the wall as you can), the boss will not be able to get you, then just fire your spell (it's a homming attack) until he's dead...

I'm not going to eat until you guys finish this series!!!

The NES controller had one D-Pad and four buttons (though 2 are Start and Select and not that often used). There's only so much experimentation before you figure things out. Modern controllers have a D-Pad, 2 analog sticks and ten buttons - or even motion controls. Have fun figuring things out on your own with that. (Heck, even a lot of SNES games had at least an option menu that basically told you which button did what.)

That's how everything was when you recall things from childhood. It's always the most amazing, most challenging stuff you ever experience... Until you experience it again.

Hunson Abadeer is probably the most entertaining "business guy of death", at least in my opinion. For a kids' show, he's pretty grim, but he's still hilarious.

I'm glad Jon memorized the whole game, because if he hadn't, this series would be even longer than Sonic '06.

I'mr really glad that started to do full\almost full runs on games lately. And maybe it's just me, but i'm starting to falling in love with the show once again since the very first months, ahh... Castlevania IV someday??? Castlevanias all the way..

After watching game grumps for over a couple hundred episodes I have fallen into that stage where occasionaly during my day I imitate Jon and go "Hey (teeth sound) Arin, aghh aghh ahhh yuphhghhhh Arin"

I'm pretty sure they are doing just that. Later they put their own bounding orange pillars to make it 16:9, but it's still a 4:3 game. Nothing is being cut out. Do you mean the black border around the game? That's probably just the way it naturally occurs, since old CRTs always cut off about 10-20% around the image and everything made back then compensated for it by keeping everything with this "TV Safe" area. Modern digital recordings don't do that, though, so now we see the extra border.

Level 9 took forever, I beat it, then it took forever again... on hard mode. Along with level 7 (the one you didn't play, took about a month and a half to beat that level).

I hope Arin and Danny someday finish where Jon left off. Also, I hope they eventually play Rondo of Blood, because after this and Sequelitis, I'd be amazed if Arin didn't like that game.

He's the person that Arin and Jon have to edit the footage into the final products you see here. If you do a search for "best of barry" on youtube you'll find some compilation videos of times Barry has directly effected the video or put some special effects on it to fit what the Grumps are saying.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the over hand has it's difficulty come solely from precision platforming and having 2 hits. It's perfectly possible to beat almost every stage on your first try if you play well enough. It's controls can are slightly stiff but with ranged weapons and a double jump you can rarely ever get blindsided, meaning if you lose in that game it's "usually" the player's fault. Something that emphasizes this is the fact you barely lose less lives on the second run than the first.

Some good GG Animated material in this episode, the whole buisnessman death part is going to be great, and the part with the fleaman mario, lol.

he does, though he has it memorized poorly. He complains there are no sub weapons when there's a perfectly good axe up there in the deathtrap room, or a fire spell if you're Syfa. Then at the water stage where Syfa gets the tracking spell he goes through it as Trevor, even though the fact that Syfa can freeze water and the birds are easier to kill with Syfa's weapon If you march past all the things the game hands you, you're going to find yourself without help.

That is exactly what I'm saying. I mean, Jon does have a musical background, so it'd only make sense that he'll eventually turn into an instrument.

Game grumps animated & all the epic song remixes make this fanbase awesome

If I remember right, the damage with holy water stacks in this game if you have a double or triple shot. So if you throw down two or three instead of just the one, it is a boss obliterater.

I love Brian Regan! Now that I think about it, I can sense some of that humor in Arin.

Not that you mentioned it specifically, but technically Megaman X had to tell you about the boss weapons after you get them, every time you get them, or else you would have no idea you were getting them. Dr Light also has to tell you what all the armor does. Megaman X also does another thing Arin absolutely hates: it introduces core game mechanics later on in the game. It's entirely possible to go to Chill Penguin's stage last and have absolutely no feel for the dash boots during Sigma's castle.

He doesn't ACTUALLY think it's cheating, he just likes to challenge himself, which is great. If you watched the Castlevania I series, Jon uses holy water on all of the bosses; and Arin complains about how that's not as satisfying as beating the bosses with other items.
