Vasque and Danner were absolutely top tier boots in the 70s. When you hear “they don’t make them like that anymore” is 100 percent true.

I don't see why this is over 400$. It's basically a Jim Green Razorback with worse materials for the sole construction at over two times the price.

I thought the same thing. The only Danner's I love with my experience with them are my Danner Corvallis 5" and they don't make them anymore. Thankfully, I have a backup pair that I haven't used yet lol. But yes, these seem like Razorbacks, but 2.5 times the price.

I've worn the Danner Mountain Trail hiking boots for years. No fancy synthetics. Just traditional old world hiking boot construction with full grain leather uppers and full leather linings. No Gore-Tex to wear through. The Vibram Gumlite soles are a little softer and wear a little faster that regular Vibram soles but stick to wet rocks like glue. Just had my pair resoled last year. Over 10 years old, nothing else had to be repaired. Still made the same today, no "improvements". They do cost a bit, but "Nice things cost money". Still made in the USA.

I bought the Mountain Light II in 2009 on the "leaked" friends and family deal for $150. They are still going strong today! Just hit 'em with the boot dressing yesterday in prep for hiking all week. I would gladly pay full price to replace them. These boots have been places! I initially was disappointed with with how that dark finish scratched and peeled off as the abuse set in, but once they were fully "distressed", the hipsters could only wish that look ha!

I used to love Danner boots. I wore their Bull Run Wellingtons for years. But with Covid the quality of their boots drastically dropped. I had three pairs of the Wellingtons fall apart in less then the same year. After the second pair fell apart they refused to offer any kind of discount or swap for another pair. I Bought the third pair and had them for less then a month and the sole started to come undone. They offered a compensation for another pair that wasn't the Bull Run as it was discontinued. Gave them one less chance with a pair of Quarry's. Those also fell apart in less then a month. Took them back to the Portland Factory location and just left them on the counter. As much as I once loved them, I will never buy another pair of boots from them.

I had planned to get a pair of Danners because I LOVE the style, the look. They really are iconic. But at $400++ dollars, I finally gave in to reality: I can't afford them, or am just unwilling to pay the price. Instead, I bought the Georgia Boots G101 on a great sale for $95. Heavier, yes, but perfectly supportive. I wear them casually and out bushwhacking and on multi-mile day hikes. They are not popular on the trails of course, but I think I LOVE them even more than I would have the Danners. For my use, my feet and my wallet, they are very comfortable.

Zamberlan are fantastic boots. I have a pair of Vioz Lux but they're so damn beautiful I rarely hike in them anymore. Less of a boot and more of a work of art. The stitching, the sole, the metal hardware in the Vioz Lux all ooze quality. They make a boot like the Danner in this video seem basic. The lighter Zamberlan mountain stuff like the Baltoro or the Salathe Trek are also great, but that's a different thing. Every hiker should own at least one classic full grain trekking boot in their hiking lifetime.

I have a version of these boots (tramline) and a pair of Jim Green Razorbacks. My dinners are half leather lined, the rear, and were about chukka boot height. I did not pay the $350 retail, but $225. I wore them instead of chukkas. They had the christie sole. I’ve relosoled them once. Most comfortable stitched boot I’ve ever had. Yeah they look cool, but it’s wearing them all day around town and on concrete foundation floors. It is materials and design. Jeans to khakis. My razorbacks are really tougher. They are still stiffer and harder underfoot, but the hiking boot I have taken to places I could not trust. I cut veg tan insoles for both of them, for comfort on the razorbacks and durability on the Danners. Finally, I’d much rather pay for the Danners than Alden Indy boots.

I had the same perception; a lot of Danner seems to be hiking cosplay, but if you want something that is somewhat technical (eg modern) while connecting to heritage (will be a bit heavy for multi-day treks but is US made), the Danner Light family seems to the way to go. Would be interesting to see them compared here. If they don’t hold up well, probably just best to get a pair of Salomons moving forward.

Agreed, a Danner Light model would be a good addition to this comparison. I'm on my second pair in 40 years, used them mostly for trail building and maintenance, and backpacking of course. Alternated the first Danner pair with some Vasques I bought years earlier for college in 1971 to keep my feet dry in Eugene rain. I much prefer the fabric liner compared to leather, it dries fast enough to avoid mold during multiple days of trail work or hiking.

Would LOVE IT if you cut those in half, they have international shipping it would be cool to see yourIbreakdown on them.

I bought a pair of these maybe 6 or 7 years ago and the fit was awful. There was way too much volume in the fore-part of the boot and the heel slip was terrible. As a result they became closet queens and remained in the box. A few months ago I sought to redeem them by putting some relatively thick insoles in them and modifying the lacing pattern. I also wear much thicker socks. They are much better, nowhere near as good as my Hanwag Bergell Top boots which are dedicated mountain trekking boots, but for day hikes over relatively easy terrain they are fine. When the Gumlite outsole has worn enough I will have them replaced with a harder Vibram sole like the Montagne.

I would be interested in seeing the LL Bean cresta get cut in half. People I work with in conservation swear by them, but they're really expensive for what they look like on the outside. One piece of leather, sure, but what's inside?

I know quite a few people with various mountain lights, me included. (I wear mountain light 2). I live close enough I bought mine at the factory outlet. I don't know anyone who has paid over $350, and a few of my hiking group have more than 10 years of hard wear on them. The best boots I've ever had that the Army didn't give me. Just my data points.

Have you considered cutting a Hanwag Bergler apart? Traditional double stitched? I have an old worn pair and as soon as I can replace them you can have them.... though German I think production was centred in the Ukraine so it maybe a long wait.

Five options on one boot would be reasonable. Id be fine with a whole cut boot that had flaws if it ment savings. Maybe they could do a budget option.

I don't care about brands per se, but I'm happy to pay extra for a boot that's union made. It's hard for people to make a living with so many companies underpaying their workers. Speaking of which, I appreciate you doing what you can to give your employees full-time hours. I know it's hard for a small company like yours to do that.

I have a pair of the Danner MEB made for Marines. They're very good well built boots. When I peruse their other offerings, my opinion plummets. Just looking at at the pictures I get the impression of cheapness and not the best construction. The boot in this video to me looks to be in the 225 - 250$ range, not $400 +. I kinda feel like Danner is going down the Carhartt road.

I hiked in Danner Mountain Light IIs all over Alaska, New Zealand, and the Yukon. After break in, they were the most comfortable boot I've owned. Resoled 3x before the leather gave out on one side. If people think they're too expensive, cool, buy something made in SE Asia , because they don't understand what it costs to have a high quality gear hand-made in the US.

I have owned a lot of hiking boots. My favorite is a tie between my Fracap Magnificos and my Danner Mountain Lights. My Danners probably have about 500 miles on them so far. They are crazy comfortable and offer enough room for my personal insoles. Here's my take: It doesn't matter how much leather is built into the midsole, or how good the materials are if the boot is so uncomfortable that you never want to wear it. I have a few pairs of some very "high quality" boots from makers that people rave about, and those boots will last for the rest of my life simply because they refuse to break in, are too heavy, and basically just a chore to wear. It is hard to wear out a boot when it sits in the cedar chest and never gets worn. One day, if my Danner's wear out, so be it. I will buy another pair with no complaints simply because the comfort factor trumps the alleged durability of some of those other highly regarded brands.

Used to wear Danner Quarrys religiously but with the price nearly doubling in the last 10 years and the quality steeply declining I switched to Georgias. Quality of the Georgias seems to be about on par with Danner for half the price in many cases if not even better. Price isn't a big deterrent for me but for my work where they tend to get destroyed fairly quickly I'll be sticking to Georgias and for my non work boots they'll be JKs. Sad to see such a revered local company like Danner take such a sharp decline over recent years, in my opinion

My Danner Acadia were the most comfortable boots I had. They fit my narrow foot just right. The soles fell off in the rain. They lasted about as long as a $50 Chinese boot. It looks like the outsole on these boots is well on it's way to separating. I'll never buy another Danner.

I really love my danner quarry's. They are way better than my keens, thorogood, timberland pro and my georgia boots. But they don't make any of them like they used to. As new as keen is, they've dropped way off. But the gore-tex on the dangers jeeps your feet wzy drier with better sir low than any other boot companies priority waterproof liners. Most breathe for shit. Like wearing bread bags under your boots

I wonder one thing about the leather lined one, wouldn't conditioning the outside with shoe grease (like foca, aquila or such) make it actually waterproof? Specially with the natural leather is the first thing i do when i purchase a new pair
