CAT 299D Front Stripping and Repainting - Man Vs. Rust

I stripped and sanded down the front bucket/loader arms of my Cat 299D, tackling the rust and scratched-off paint.
The front loader arms were pretty scuffed and banged up, and had a slapdash paint job prior to my purchasing this CAT second hand. I want to get any surface rust removed and protect from future damage as much as possible.
I disassembled the various connectors and mounts, and used stripping compound to remove the previous paint job and original paint. A straight razor is incredibly helpful here to scrape off the loosened paint! I also used a wire wheel to remove stubborn areas and wire brushes for the hard-to-reach nooks and crannies, taking everything to bare metal and polishing away any rough areas.
After everything is cleaned up, I used an etching paint, spray primer, and official CAT mango yellow spray paint to make everything look as good as new. I also used a clear coat while the paint was still slightly tacky, and let everything cure untouched for a week. This will hopefully help everything last and look good for years.

Thank you. I have had this machine for a few years now and I love it. I can’t imagine having a farm without one. Just yesterday I used it to pull my truck out of the mud!

Great video, I just picked up a 279d3 that I may have to do similar work to. a couple of things to try for rust, a pin gun to get off big chunks or flaking paint and Muriatic acid($10 a bottle at ace), just wear gloves and glasses for the acid and don't let it touch anything but the steel. Look forward to your future videos.

a little tip to prevent dust entrapment in the paint would be to soak the surrounding area with water and wet the floors. other than that it was a job well done.

I almost never comment, but there are some critical elements here regarding your safety for the future. I am not exactly sure what chemical agent you are using to "strip" , but It would have to extremely corrosive to dissolve that coating which is actually construction grade enamel. The off gases produced by that mixture can be fatal in a very short amount of time, and it happens without warning as they are VOC/VOIC's in high concentration. NEVER interact with any form of chemical etching agent or enamel without a multi stage respirator, preferably full face, as a large amount of particles actually enter through the eyes/ears. And secondly (and far less scary, haha) bringing it down to bare metal is actually working against yourself... instead, take some 220-600 wetsand to knock the paint down and level it where it has degraded, and then apply your next layer so you build up as much as possible. You'll notice the area you redid will be the first to go again in the future...Great job though. Doze on!

Thank you for the info! That is great feedback and you are right, I should have been using a full face mask respirator. Something that wasn't clear in the video, was the reason why I took areas to bare metal. It appeared that someone before me tried to "touch up" a lot of the front areas. Mostly painting over rust. Some of the rust was so bad that it was starting to make divots or pockets in the metal. This machine came from the east coast, so it was probably exposed to salt. I figured I needed to get it back to "zero" and start over on some of it. Some of the panels in a video I did a couple weeks ago, I did as you suggested. I left most of the original paint and sanded down just want needed to be painted. Once again, Thank you for the great info and keep the great suggestions coming! I am learning a lot as I go, and I love the feedback.
