There is nothing that compare to joyous experience of basking in delectable odor of old dinosaur fart’s (gear oil) for hours upon end except for basking in burnt up old dinosaur farts (burnt gear oil) however well roasted ATF is definitely a close second 😂🤣😅😁
Respirator to the rescue, won't smell a thing! That smell is from the Sulfur in oils like gear oil, which is really good at anti-friction needed for gears.
So much talent and knowledge and skill and patience you have!!!! You prob never thought thousands of folks would enjoy sitting drinking tea or coffee and watching you work. Really enjoy the channel!!!!
That many thousands of $$$$ you don’t throw away, you fix it someway, somehow. And use it until it’s truly worn out. Then you sell it to someone else, who’ll fix it and use it some more.
@@dirtfarmer7472 you are preaching to the choir here. Most people today don’t have a damn clue how to run it, let alone how to fix it! They don’t want to get there hands dirty!
@@OOpSjm yes sir, I deal with equipment, not as much as I use too. We moved a lot of mining equipment D-11, 992 loaders, 777 dump trucks, and some smaller things too. But the tree huggers don’t like the coal industry, so its pretty much shut down around here.
I'm 68 yrs old...can't work as hard as you anymore, I wish I still had in in me. I'm envious of your skill and also your drive..... Like your videos... good stuff.
Wow ! Not only a highly skilled welder, but also a mechanical expert, impressive my friend all the job you manage to do on these monsters ! In France, on the construction sites, we call the 651 "La Brute" ! That's exactly what this beast is ! Rock on Buddy !
just paused the video when you said the goal is to “get the transmission back in today” my eyes got so wide!! holy moly dude you are good at what you do
I'm dumbfounded! 😮 I used to be a heavy macine operator and LOVE watching your videos seeing what makes em tick! I hope you get a fat raise and/or bonus this year. I doubt there are many with your level of expertise!
Sometimes what looks like a fairly straight forward job, turns into so much more when you get into it. We've all been there and experienced that issue. Thumbs Up!
Nice magnet! Next time place the magnet into a ziplock bag.... it makes it easier to separate the metal from the magnet. Some people use a coffee cup for the same purpose.
Thanks for the information on the 3M cubitron, well worth their price. 5 times faster than a standard grinding wheel. Bought grinder wheels, flap disks, cutoff wheels, and fiber disks. Expensive, but well worth it.
I had to tap out at 10:24 the amount of new steps you had to do in order to get to the issue gave me a migraine. I feel for you my man. If you can take the time to read the children’s book to give a mouse a cookie. That’s what this cat reminds me of. Stay safe and god bless you.
Yep, same here. Too many poor design points on this equipment. That's why my mechanic days are over. None of it will matter soon anyways, with the economy crashing, ww3 and the return of our lord will come soon enough. Thank God I'm not working on this junk anymore, my fight is over.
I am really impressed with your approach, Greg!! Excellent, Clean and precise work!! That was certainly a “Daunting Task”, That really shouldn’t be trusted to anyone but Your Caliber of Ability!! Great job as usual, Greg!! Thanks again, Vic!!!
Working on machines that someone has been into before is almost guaranteed to be a can of worms, that scraper transmission was no exception. Nice blending on the O-Ring face, that's a job for steady hands and the right disks....
I like the way you tell the story of the repair through your videos. A lot of times there's a lot of ups and downs and changing of tactics for how it's going to get done. You do an excellent job of framing all those little decisions. For those of us who don't do it all like you, we do our small part, but we hardly ever get to see the victory shot of the machine running, so that was very cool you included it.
wow! owner loves his scrapers! Tall radials and I shudder at what that just cost! Knowing the scent go gear oil... It NEVER comes out of jeans. confirming yer the man again! great channel
This is craftsmanship at the highest level being conducted in a challenging environment. I do hope your employer/management appreciates and compensates you adequately. You just don't come across techs with the compete skill set as you posses everyday. Very impressive exhibition of talent and skills young man.
Wow! Greg, that is work I never envision myself doing! Your knowledge, skills , equipment and willingness to tackle such heavy duty mechanical work, not to mention the welding should command you the highest rate of pay! Not many have the knnowledge or skills to do what you do. I was hoping that the open ventilation for a few days dissipated the hydrolic fumes enough you could safely do the repairs. Your work facinates me, so I much appreciate your videos! Kudos!
Love your videos, they make me realize that my problem jobs I do are nothing compared to others like you do Greg....you are very inspirational.... thank you so much......I am trying to share with my friends so they can see what real ingenuity and perseverance is all about..... Bravo my Friend.....PB
My first thought was this was a mechanic's engineering job and strange to put a welding specialist on a transmission leakage job. You must be recognised and someone who can fix anything. None the less, another amazing job. Thank you.
Greg...I could hear your frustration with those tubes and this job in general! What doesn't kill us always makes us stronger! The relief you've must've felt to get this one over....excellent work and job integrity to finish it. Most would've said to Hell with it, Its beyond my scope!
This is exactly what I go through working on my sailboat. Exactly. Do a small project and next thing you know it's a week later and I've dealt with a million crazy small situations.
Well done! You are truly blessed. You are a highly skilled extreme duty mechanic. fixings the Big Dogs(heavy equipment). I see you are also highly skilled welder. But what takes you to the top is your machinist skills. You at the top man and your work shows! You got a lot of experience and I got respect for ❤ you. The last of the mohicans.
Yesterday, I took my vehicle to get the oil change, and the dealer recommended changing the lower control arm it took me 4 hours to do that, and it was so frustrating because the shock and swaybar was fighting me! Now that I see what this man is going troug to do this job, it makes my repair insignificant. God bless you brother
My main concern with a job like this is ?? Getting Paid for time spent ??? That is the most difficult part I find when dealing with jobs that seem to Never end. Especially when it was planned as a 8 hour job which turns into 2 full days. Not knowing what your customer is like to deal with is difficult to say much. But, when it comes to money. I find most customers become a little difficult when you want more money for extra time spent. That would my most Hated thing about running a business ???
I definitely wouldn’t do this with a customer I didn’t trust to pay for the time. This guy knew the potential for problems and was okay with it. Actually glad I found issues.
It hurts instantly to see you crawling in that close quarters working with the air gauge, welder and grinder... The blending of the O ring surface was really great! What a weird construction, two compartments filled with different fluids only seperated by that O ring... 😮 Thx for showing, your frustration was only shining through a little bit... 😇😜👍👍👍
I'll bet Cat would not have done that job, you tackle some of the most difficult jobs and always get them done not always with ease but done. I've been in a few of those hole sticking them back together, great job.
Great great work. !!!! Your customer is very lucky too have to solve their scrapper issues. You are defiantly one of the best of the best. !! Please keep the videos coming.
What a damn nightmare. Guy might want to throw a match at this machine. It usually stands to reason that on a rig this old, someone already crawled down this rabbit hole but took shortcuts to speed it along. Then you come along and win the opportunity to fix the machine and the last guys handy work. You’re a patient man.
Scrapers are a long service life machine. (some might add they run them too long!). However they are stupid expensive to purchase new. So re powers to Tier 4 engines, rebuilds and life extension programs pay for them selves quickly, as a scraper can move a lot of dirt fast, that's how they make their owners money. And when your 18 they are fun as hell to run! 😁
as soon as i heard you say "transmission" i was like "hope he bought tubes its easier" you did a great job those things are a curse when they are new let alone after everyone and their dog has had their way with them.
Didnt realize you were dual ticketed cuz Holy crap thats one heck of a project👍 and yes i bet the smell of gear oil was a wonderful time. Thanks for sharing fella, fantastic job.
651's 657's When the cuts, haul roads and fills are properly maintained [not overloaded] a welding nightmare they run smooth as silk moving massive amounts of earth fast and efficiently. Those machines are the best. I love them.
i have fabricated fit welded and rigged my whole career ,i could not imagine doing that kind of work , on equipment like that , you have the patience of a saint ........i couldnt do it ....
They must be a really good customer to get involved in all that service work in addition to the welding repair. That was crazy what had been done to that unit already. Lots to fix to get to the point of repairing the leaks.
I took your advise and bought some of those 3M Cubitron II Fibre grinding Discs and man o man I will never use anything else ,they are awesome . Thanks for sharing . .
Greg let me just tell you what you already probably know. You are an expert in welding, expert mechanic, and expert engineer. You would be that guy I would call if I needed help from an expert lol great job as always this was one of those jobs that makes or breaks people. The way you handled it, I can tell you’ve been through some shit lol
I don’t know which one stinks the worst propane or gear lube. Except for now you have to smell the gear lube on your tools for a long time. Certainly going to last a while but the job you have done is another amazing thing.
You need to go to home Depot or Lowe's and get one of those vacuums for $25 that goes on top of any 5 gallon bucket if you get many jobs like that. I keep one on my service truck to clean up stuff like that for example when I repair or replace fifth wheel plates in semi trailers I like to clean them out and paint them on the inside before I put the floor back in or weld the top plate in.
If you place your magnet 🧲 inside an empty oil bottle the plastic might help it not stick to the surrounding steel but should still pick-up all the metal slag and fillings! I've done it a couple times myself and it worked well for my needs.. Hope it helps you next time.
Hey mate I work on these all the time you need to split the diff off the transmission and reseal it as it can leak between them as well. Cheers from Australia
