Take a ride with me on the struggle bus as we attempt to repair and rebuild the water pump out of the ol' D6C dozer. Also a look at a few new parts that came in.
The housing has a grease relief fitting and a grease fitting if I remember correctly, So the lip of the bottom seal would face the top if looking down, then I put the water seal in before putting the shaft and bearing assembly in! Try not to touch the carbon seal or the steal seal surface with your fingers, add a drop of oil on the ring, shining side toward the carbon, and install it, give it a twist to spreed the oil! The top cover plate the seal should face the bearings, unless you do not have a relief fitting then it should face out, when you grease the pump the over grease should then come out the relief fitting or come out the outer seal! If you put the bottom seal in with the lip down it will fill the weep hole with grease over time!
a few tips for you old mate .always consider will i be pulling this apart again down the track some time in the future ie never seize bolts and threads .purchase a wire wheel for a 4inch grinder they do a great job . belly guards build a fire in them should make it shit easy to clean them .other tips i cringed when i watched you removing front under radiator guard . go buy yourself proper chains for lifting those straps you are using just do not cut it in the manner that you are using them for ..sorry if you think i am having a go at you but i HAVE seen some horrible accidents in my time working as a fitter in open cut coal mines .working on dozers and scrappers .good luck I like to see someone like you having a go .by the way how muck did the old girl cost you .cheers ROD MAC 😊 AUSTRALIA
the bulb with the hollow nut fits into the adapter fitting on the elbow.. its a special thread.. the hollow nut seals against the shoulder on the bulb to seal the coolant from leaking.. please use extreme care unwinding the cable... you must NOT KINK IT.. you have to UNROLL it . not unwind it..
I have looked all over and cannot find a plug for this tool, unless its hidden on the opposite side of the block under the 20 lbs of dirt and sticks and oil that I need to clean up.
@@DMIDoes That's possible too. I know on most truck engines it's located near the starter most often. A good person to ask would be a RU-vidr by the name of Squatch253.
@@DMIDoes There is also a RU-vid video which shows that it may be necessary to remove the starter and install a tool housing mount to bar the engine. But it is for a different cat engine though. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--sn3w8xx8UY.html
Hmmm, yeah maybe I just need that adapter tool. Maybe the engine is old enough that it doesn't have the special port for the barring tool. Thanks Merle!
@@DMIDoes No problem. One other thing. I did see a video of one which was on the opposite side from the starter, so it could be under a layer of dirt and grease like you said?
gasket scraper.. the 5 way painters tool.. can be sharpened with a 10 Inch Flat Diamond, 180 Grit File. sharpening the angled edge side to side along the length of the file.. then hitting the flat side once to take the burr off that side.. you can now scrape gaskets off with ease without digging gouges in the surface of the part.. if you start to dig gouges .. stop resharpen the 5 way scraper on the diamond file... warning... do this dry on the diamond file.. i made a mistake and dipped my file in used engine oil just for kicks.. it was scalpel sharp.. could peal layers of skin if you just brushed by it..
Hi Dennis, yes I called Dover and they were helpful but unable to help me with this particular head. They referred me to Diesel Cast Welding in Minnesota, which is much closer to me than SC. I appreciate your help and I'll keep you updated on what I find.
Would you be so kind as to share the partnumbers of the repair kit? I am having difficulties getting the correct kit for the exact same pump you done on this video. Here in South Africa they work on CAT part numbers but no one can give me the part numbers.
Thank you for that. Yes my pump is exactly same as yours. Can you perhaps give me all the different part numbers of the seals etc? We really struggling to get all the parts down here in SA.
What parts manual are you using? What is your machines serial number? Mine is 76A1376. And I dont even know if this is the correct serial number punched on the block.
Mine is a 74A1792. I think the difference is yours would be a power shift transmission. I'm using an official parts manual like this www.ebay.com/itm/192753341078
I haven't looked too closely at the front of the crankshaft yet to see how difficult it would be to get a socket on it. My worry would be breaking the bolt. I think there is supposed to be some sort of cover or access port for that barring tool but I haven't found it yet, need to clean more grime off the engine first.
It's a possibility but it looked like a newer gasket style. That water pump had been rebuilt by someone else before I got in there. I could still read the writing on the gasket, very similar to the new one I put on.
