Awesome video. I love these cat scale videos. This really shows how much these things weigh and how it will affect the tow vehicles. Toy haulers are kind of dangerous in my opinion. Joe is a smart guy to have a dually to tow his. Most of the time the “you” ends up being mostly behind the rear axle of the trailer and that is a recipe for disaster. But they are definitely HD only as far as towing is concerned and I think should be approached as maybe dually only.
Thanks, I got the Silverado Custom weighed with my race trailer and you will be surprised by the numbers! After seeing the numbers, just about every toy hauler should be considered dually territory but I understand some use their trucks outside of towing but at least a 1 ton for something like this 👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork yeah the thing with toy haulers it’s not so much the overall weight but where that weight is in the trailer. And then the one like in the video are just so long. I would say the same thing for 34’ enclosed car trailers. That’s pushing the limits of a SRW truck. Really even a 32’ enclosed car trailer.
I have to load all my gear in the back of my toy hauler to get a reasonable hitch weight when it's not loaded with a toy. They really balance them to have something in them all the time.
At home, we have smaller rigs. In the world of work, I have hauled loads up to 227,000#. When I was hauling temperature controlled loads over the lower 48 and Canada. It was fun to compare the CAT scale weights to what it felt like to me. Always did the CAT scale after getting full fuel tanks. To prove my weights. But, it was amazing how close my estimate was to the actual weight. With light duty pickups. CAT scale weights can essential to stay out of trouble! Most people don't realize how much they might be overloading their RVs. Or how out of balance they may be. And RVs don't have sliders on the rear tandems.
Awesome video JB. I have a similar set up but have a SRW 3500 and a 35 foot bumper pull Toy Hauler. The one thing I would’ve loved to see is how that weight would look with his fresh water tank 1/2 full or even full. My unit sits and pulls nicely when that fresh water tank is decently full with a couple of ATV’s or a side by side in the unit. I do have a WDH to help with any sway but when the unit is loaded down and ready to go she pulls nice. Congrats again on hitting 50k.
If only I was coming to Utah again this summer we could weigh my setup! This is a great informational video and has been my experience with a 5th wheel toyhauler. It takes 400-500lbs off the truck when it's loaded.
@@supporterofsanity absolutely. JB made a good point to me the other day talking about this but I think bumper pull toy haulers are just the worst lol. His point was though most of them are designed to allow the “toy” to come further into the trailer where as most 5ers have the garage behind the axles. So that is valid but I still feel the bumper pull trailer is way more subject to sway than the 5er. I guess the 5er will just bounce you to death if the tongue weight is off a little.
@@supporterofsanity I have an open box toyhauler so I have a little more flexibility than one with a separate garage. I do try to load more weight up front and fill the water tank halfway. I think all side by sides have a rear motor so I don't want too much weight too far back in the trailer.
Can you find a scale that has 3 divisions instead of just two or a single axle scale. You can show how weight moves form one axle to another. I use one of the self way scale along the hyway, it hardly gets used. It is level with the road, there is enough room beside the scale so you can weigh each wheel on one side then turn around and weigh each wheel on the other side instead of both wheels on one axle. It's an eye opener on how fast one tire can be overloaded on an axle, but when you weigh the axle you are under the weight limit. I talked to an RCMP officer about driving backwards on a scale because you could get a ticket for it. When I showed him that the axle weight was under the maximum weight but when I weighed each wheel, one front tire was over the tire weight capacity. He said he'd rather have you safe on the hyway and prevent an accident then give you a ticket for driving backwards on a scale that's not used very much. There are a lot of people that have trouble understanding how weight distribution hitches are supposed to transfer weight, I don't think some of the rv dealers can figure it out either because I have seen some bad set ups coming out of dealerships. I am hoping you can keep going on educating everyone on how weight distribution hitches should be setup to transfer weight. You could show how adding air bags on the rear affects weight transfer and removes weight from the front axle and then balance the air bags to the weight distribution hitch so that you are adding weight to the front axle instead of removing it. You could do a video of the benefits of having overload springs or air bags when towing a fifth wheel trailer.
Wow the empty hitch weight is more than a lot of trucks total payload. Probably more than a lot of max bumper pull hitch weights even if not over the GVWR. Curious what the weight distribution hitch will do! Excellent video Bro!
I was surprised that the trailer had a 21% hitch weight on an empty trailer with the exception of batteries/propane. The manufactures may need to update there weights because this was eye opening to say the least! Thanks bro!
The WDH will probably make the tongue weight too light. JB already kind of alluded to that the 11% number was too light for that trailer. The WDH will lift up the back of the truck and put weight on the front. So I don’t know. I’m not crazy about WDH setups for that reason. I guess they are ok if your truck can handle the trailer you’re towing without one but even with that I just don’t like them. I’d rather have air bags I think.
Great video, and looking forward to the wdh video. These are great ideas…. I think your hitch weight percentage is off though. Should be hitch weight divided by total trailer weight (trailer axle weight plus hitch weight), so 10.5% loaded and 17.6% unloaded.
Hey JB! I love your Vids and all the hard Work and research you put in them, but I am gonna have to throw in the Red challenge Flag on this one LOL. In the vid you said that the Polaris was 1900# but according to your own Numbers The Polaris is actually 2340#. That's a difference in 440lbs, witch happens to be the difference in Tonge weight of the trailer being loaded with the Polaris VS. unloaded. Love your Vids!
I have a small bumper pull toy hauler, Momentum 21G. Advertised tongue weight was 920#. Typical tongue weight for us is 1250#, which is about 15% of typical trailer weight. Our tongue weight can change drastically based on what we put in the garage. Even for this small toy hauler I wouldn’t tow with a 1/2 ton. These trailers are taller and wider. They have more frontal area and side area. A 1/2 ton could certainly pull the trailer, but it wouldn’t be very comfortable.
Similar setup here. 21QBS XLR Boost with an advertised tongue weight around 917. When I first weighed it empty, it came in over 1500 lbs. Way too much hitch weight for the weight of the trailer. It comes in around 1200 while loaded with a Seadoo w/trailer.
This is a pretty well known fact in the toy hauler community. 18-20% tongue weight without toys is average. Most of the people I ride SxS with own a Sherline scale to get it loaded right.
Are these toy hualers designed for the huge limo side by sides or a 4 wheeler? I mean those side by sides are enormous. It's only 1k less Than my cherokee and it's wider!
*Being able to provide all my needs without the help of the Government is really a dream come through and I’m getting $50,000 returns from my 10k investment*
Quite impressive but HOW!!?😊 I know it's possible, my colleague at work always get 40K every week, I would appreciate if you show me how to go about it.
