Sly Marbo, the man who killed a Banelord titan by himself, the man who killed an entire Dark Eldar army with nothing but his knife and his cunning, the man who dispersed an entire Ork Waaagh with only one well placed shot, I swear that he will be there when Big E challenges the chaos gods to battle off the army's of Khorne

This episode killed me, especially the ending with the Sly Marbo jokes. Edit: Much like Sly Marbo does to literally anything he meets.

When the Imperium has to deal with the really crazy guard armies like Krieg and Catachan they should either pick people from said planet to train as Commissars so they might work out better with their units or just slap a commissar hat on a senior officer leave them be and call it a day just so the Imperium can check the "got a commissar" box on their paperwork.

The thing about GW is that there is no consistency in scale. A regiment can be 500 dudes or 100k. A planet of 12 million with an effective negative population growth due to the mortality can put millions of fighting men into the field etc. Never take GWs numbers for anything other than whoever was writing a random piece of sidebar fluff in a rulebook 30+ years ago saying "that number sounds cool"

I'm pretty sure I've read a lore blurp where there was an attempted invasion of Catachan by a Tyranid splinter fleet. It failed because Catachan destroyed every Nid that touched down on the surface. Not the Jungle Fighters the flora and fauna of the planet beat a Tyranid invasion.

I’m kinda disappointed that they didn’t mention how sad the character of Sly Marbo is. He’s basically the Rambo of the Warhammer universe, along with all of his problems as well.

Best boi Nork Deddog (Ded dog, not dedd og as Bricky says, the plebian) story that made me love the Guard way back when I was a wee teenager: The huge figure shambled toward the thin and tangled body of Colonel Greiss. Luckily, the ancient colonel had been thrown free of the carrier as it veered out of control. Now the Chimera perched up-ended in a drainage ditch, steam and smoke pouring from its crew compartment. The force of the explosion had pitched Greiss into a ditch on the other side of the track. As the massive Ogryn towered over the tiny body, he sensed that his master was badly hurt. He looked for a moment at the oddly twisted limbs and blood-soaked uniform and poked the old man a couple of times to make sure he wasn't fooling. Greiss moaned faintly. Nork felt a tide of misery well up inside his huge and faithful heart. Greiss was his friend. Greiss had been good to Nork and let him fight by his side. The Ogryn fumbled with his water bottle, breaking off the cap with clumsy hands as he gently proffered the bottle to the man's lips. Greiss murmured as the cool water splashed over his face. "Nork," he whispered. "Stop trying to drown me and fetch the medi-pack." " Yus, sarr!" shouted Nork, saluting instinctively with his left hand, then his right hand, then both hands together. Nork shuffled to his feet and loped back toward the carrier. He picked his way past the crumpled bodies of the crew and the HQ squad and noticed with only passing curiosity the pain in his own legs where numerous shrapnel hits had penetrated his thick hide. Without a second thought, he grabbed hold of the Chimera behind its rear track guards and heaved. The weighty vehicle shifted slightly. He heaved again. There was a creak of tortured metal as the carrier pivoted against the soft edge of the ditch and came to rest on its broad tracks. Colonel Greiss tried to flex his hands. Nothing. He tried to raise his head but as he did so his vision swirled and he lost consciousness. He came round moments later, or minutes, or was it hours, it was hard to tell. His ears were booming from the noise of the explosion. All he could hear was a sound like something large and heavy being slowly dragged over an unyielding surface. His sight seemed to be growing dim and shadowy. Then he realized Nork was standing over him and beside Nork was the wreckage of the Chimera. The Ogryn had dragged the armored carrier out of the ditch and 20 yards down the road. " I said fetch the medi-kit, not the carrier, Nork," whispered Greiss. He was regaining the feeling in his arms and legs and didn't like it much. " Da medi-kit is in da carrier, sarr," beamed the Ogryn. " Good thinking Nork," grunted the colonel through clenched teeth and mounting pain. "Now bring the medi-kit over here." " Yus, sarr!" came the loud and snappy response as Nork plunged into the Chimera, remembered he had forgotten to salute, came back, saluted twice for good measure, and busied himself searching for the vehicle's medical supply chest.

I got that Catachan Commander and named him Avery Dillon, combining Al Dillon from Predator and Avery Johnson from Halo.

So I'm writing this down for future me to use as in a killteam campaign. Imagine an imperial assasin menaged to tranq a bomb toad for use in a glitterbomb style assasination attamt but he got distracted by some other ant or another and is otherwise engaged. Now it is your killteams task to retrieve the bombtoad and keep feeling al nice and fuzzy. However a local ork nob who's eyesight got detracted by the local spikey trees heard the bomb toad fall asleep and assumed it was his favorite squig and has sent a killteam of his own to retrieve it. just seems like such a good time, orks trying to "rescue" a bombtoad and humans trying to keep from exploding.

Catachan could be the best marines in the imperium, if they weren’t so busy being fucking awesome.

All the best Guard regiments are from either death worlds or just generally terrible places: Cadia, Catachan, Mordian, Krieg, Armageddon...

22:16 hi Bricky, I’m a very loyal fan of both your channel and this podcast. You introduced me to the 40K world and have started a model buying and painting addiction that I absolutely love. What I do not love is the fact that I am now aware of a being like this. Scorpions are, by far, my worst fear (mainly from trauma as a kid) and seeing this abomination has made me rethink my life. And me, being the dummy that I am, watching this right before I go to bed has enlightened me to the fact that I can no longer do that, in fear of a train sized, miliscorpion busting down my bedroom wall and killing me instantly. This has bugged me everytime I watch this video but Bricky, you forgot to mention how during the 3rd War for Armageddon, when Commisar Yarick sent a request to Coronel Iron Hand Straken to help them defend against the Orks, Coronel Straken took the invite and when they arrived in Armageddon, he sent Sly Marbo to defend an entire Factory Complex from Ork looters and to no one's surprise, Sly succeeded in his mission and throughout the course of the war, successfully defended thw complex to thw point where Orks think that the Complex was haunted.

Fun story about Nork. One time during a battle in a place called Chabda against the orks, the imperial command bunker got overrun by the ork warboss and a ton of meganobz. All the guardsmen fled except Nork, who punched his away clean through all the meganobz until he reached the warboss, at which point he headbutted him so fucking hard the warboss went flying through one of the bunker's walls and fell into a river of acid. The remaining meganobz were so impressed and intimidated that they promptly fucked off from the command bunker.

Best imperial guard unit ever but it saddens me you didn’t say how nork also got a hat from a commissar who he saved during a heavy firefight. It is his favorite thing he was given

39:11 Yes Commander Greiss, the guy Nork protected, was technically a commissar. He’s the only Commissar that the Catachani haven’t killed or abandoned to their death. And on the topic of Greiss, that hat on Norks skull speaker was originally his, if I’m remembering that correctly. Nork took it as a keepsake of his old boss.

I love that Sly Marbo is a Rambo expy both in legendary badassery and in being completely maladjusted for life outside of combat. It’s a key part of the character that is too often forgotten

Absolutely my favorite episode yet lol. I love the Catachan Jungle Fighters and based my airsoft tactics on the Catachan Devils, including traps, ambushes, and striking behind enemy lines. It's actually a lot of fun.

14:50 "Tithe" originally referred to "A tenth" giving a Tithe meant you gave 10% of any given thing. Presumably this means that every Imperial Planet gives up 10% of their fighting force each Tithe?

when considering the imperial census of catachan saying that there is only 12 million inhabitants. do bear in mind, the imperial scribes probably never went there to count. and any burocrat sent to actually count the people.... probably got eaten by the wildlife long before he finished counting. so my guess is that 12 million is all he had time to count before he was messily devoured by something and the last known number was was was forwarded to imperial census data after his death
