Thank you for this and your wonderful commentary. I've just purchased a Cat30 and am going to be doing a survey soon - your comments at 1:29 made me smile.
After having the boat now for 3 years and using it about once a week, I have no complains. Ok, a new main sail, repairs on the dodger and a couple of lines, and new bottom paint.
People have been saying they aren't seaworthy for 30 yrs. Funny how many are still out cruising 30 yrs later. No, a Catalina wouldn't be my first choice to weather a hurricane but, with as many people still out cruising, they sure seem to be strong enough for most situations. Not to mention, I seldom hear a Catalina owner complain about quality. The only rumor I would give any weight to is blister problems & that very well may be a problem with any older glass boat. Either way, it's an easy fix with modern materials. I would love an older C 30 or 34 but I am many miles from any coast right now. Someday. Enjoy your new 30.
Nice, I am looking to get a survey on a 1984 Catalina 30. Needs a few things fixed up but should be sailing soon as long as the survey doesn't show any serious issues.
I surveyed three catalina 30's. The other boats I looked at were over priced, or very under maintained. The first catalina 28 I found - i loved it - and bought it. Been enjoying her ever since.
nice looking boat and they sail well and handle the heavy well if rigged for it and one blister easy fix , keep the boat well vented and dry and some times lift the floor boards and leave them off for a few weeks and curtans off so the sunlight can get in good boat
I´m impressed. After 28 years it looks like new! Was this inspection required by law or did you ask for it before buying? Could you tell me what is the usual price for such a boat in the US. Kind regards from Spain.
what was the reason for inspection? Was it due to insurance reasons? Did you do a homeowners finance on it for inspection? I have a "old" glass boat too as well a little 22 footer columbian cruiser and had to do the same thing here in R.B.Y.C. but i didn't have too dry dock it. just fill out the sea worthy papers with the insurance company. anyways cheers
@@photoman4you my last sailboat didn’t have keel bolts is it a huge deal at haul out? Also the boat hasn’t been hauled out in seven years so I don’t think I’ll buy this one. I enjoyed this boat features just old!!!
???....I had a Catalina 30 1985 model which I single handed in the Caribbean and Bahamas. I weathered one Force 2 Hurricane and did a crossing in it to Gib and to Palma Majorca. It was a good boat, my only problem with it was blisters...the lay up was thick and the boat was stiff. I would have another. Frank Butler did a good job.
I've been hearing that for years but haven't found any evidence to back it up.. why do YOU not think it seaworthy. i'm just curious, I had a 27 and it handled some rough stuff with no problem. I do not want another, but not because of it's seaworthiness. I didn't like the fact they broached so easily
Wait but can I ask you? that opening statement made me not want to even pursue boating.. is that a thing? that its just some huge money-pit owning a boat? tell me the truth boat owners...
Yes, a boat is a hole in the water you throw money into....but its worth every penny. Don't think having a sailboat is cheaper either by not having to buy as much gas. LOL.
So let me get this right .. You had a marine survey after you bought it. Not before ?? Also your commentary well just sucks. You made a great video could have been really informative. Keep making videos just just lighten up. I subcribed
I was thinking the same thing. The inspection comes before handing over your money nless you're getting a really really good deal and they say buy it now or never...and you can do a fairly intelligent inspection yourself.
