Welcome to Season 2 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. As last year, the rules are simple, come out as heavy or heavier than going in to crown ourselves victors.
This entire series is about catch n cook!
This year we start off with a catch n cook minnows - a delectable treat!
This year we decided to be more mobile and we came in ready with a plan. Find out if we can put turn a year's worth of experiments and learning into success and thrive in our epic journey of survival!
I'm joined by Jeremy, One Wildcrafter: / @onewildcrafter
and Adam Craig Outdoors: / @adamcraigoutdoors
In this episode we seek beaver as the boon animal but also set minnow traps in case we aren't successful. We add wild edibles to our meal including milkweed and various species of mushroom including chanterells and lobster mushrooms and chokecherries.

After watching this, I am thankful. After knowing that RU-vid may censor, The Wooded Beardsman still manages to release truthful, honest, comedic and real entertainment. Not to mention the amount of usable survival information. Number one in my book. How much smarter would people be if this was as important as a football game? Food for thought.

I’m not attacking u on ur comment, just having a little fun with those words. Have a good day

@@TheWoodedBeardsman I've lived on only $535.00/ month for a few years and like you said, when your hungry all you can do is think about food. But it's amazing what you can learn about living off $100.00 a month when your rent is $435.00/month. I haven't lived like that for a while but even when I had no home I was still working. Lived out of my car for about 2 months, went to work no one was the wiser, till my one job, my boss had found out I was living in my car, I was making $17/hr and I told him I didn't think it was his concern and that I'd find a place as soon as I could he found me an apartment the next day... I find the most difficult thing living off of system for people who would rather not is getting off of it. But it is possible. I lost a job, lived, had an accident with my pick up truck, bought a car at a dealership, with my tax return $3000.00 down got a job delivering pizza then got on at a garbage recycling plant then quit both those jobs and got on at a waste oil and hazzardous waste recycling plant, the last one is where my boss had found me my apartment, but just before the accident with my p/u truck I had just finished my Az truck driving course..the accident was deemed bad weather and not my fault..it was a trippy experience that I wouldn't want others to go through.

Should’ve popped the bellies of the minnows and washed them in water before cooking. It isn’t that hard to gut them. They tasted bitter because of the bile. Also would’ve been better to fry them with animal lard, would’ve been possible to do that if you guys caught that beaver.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 6 лет назад
For sure, but we caught the beaver after the minnows so didn't have the fat. I think you're right about the minnows.

In the absence of lard u can also roast them slightly over hot coals after gutting & cleaning them. They are quite good that way.

34:00 - Don't pour out that water! You literally made gourmet mushroom stock and then poured it out. ...but hey, like everyone else, you're learning as you go along. I just hope that other people read this comment; I save all my shiitake stems, and use them to make a delicious stock. It's probably the most versatile stock there is too. Should've used that stock to cook the minnows in. Great video all the same, thanks. :-)
@williamnelson4066
@williamnelson4066 4 года назад
I agree many people boil stuff but never keep the water afterwards which is full of flavour and water soulable nutrients, shrimps/crayfish are also good for making stock . Pets love it in their foods as well.

Minnow soup? With the guts still in it? That's instant regret right there. Gut them and try to fry them, or boil with some herbs and spices. If you keep the guts, it's just nigh inedible unless you're really starving.
@fasdr
@fasdr 5 лет назад
yeah the guts are what they tasted as bitter..... think he bit in a chunk of guts the first time that's why it was super bitter.... :D
@jeois411
@jeois411 6 лет назад
Eating small fish whole sometimes is bitter because of the gall bladder or some other organ. The people who are saying it's because of the dirt in guts is wrong. The guts taste dirty if you don't purge them in clean water, but it's not THAT bitter. Trust me, I'm of Asian descent, and we ate those things fried up all the time regardless of the bitter taste. I wouldn't eat them boiled without a heavy sauce... a soup does sound nasty.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 6 лет назад
Great!!! Thanks for the heads up. Next time we gut those little fish :)
@jeois411
@jeois411 6 лет назад
Yeah, you can do that, but minnows are too tiny to be worth the effort, IMO. I suggest deep frying them whole if you have fat/oil, which lessens the bitterness and makes the bones crispy (edible) too. That said, gutting them is probably your best bet if have no tolerance for bitter food. Anyway, I'm enjoying the 2nd series and hope it's as successful as the one from last year. Looking forward to next week's episode.

That’s why sardines are in a spicy mustered sauce or hot sauce because that’s the only way you can eat them. Steaming them and then putting them in the sauce would have been tasty 😋

@@TheWoodedBeardsman They eat in Asia very young sea food like, tiny shrimps, small fish, who normally gets 30cm, baby squid and so on. If you kill and eat that, you destroy the sea environment. Google it and you will be scared...

The art of identifying mushroom sounds tough. I hear most are poisonous, I’d be too scared in making a mistake, but the mushrooms do look tasty. Also maybe you can put the small fishes into a scrabbled egg.

I would go just so I could lose 20 pounds, lol.With all the research they did going into this, and from the learning curve from last year, I'm confident they are going to blow this one out of the water. It's inevitable that Jeremy is going to lose weight, but I think Chris will either maintain or gain weight. This is my humble prediction.

Being a girl and your physical stature has nothing to do with it, think about this, Chris is only 40 pounds heavier than you. It's all about knowledge, Chris and Jeremy are showing us, through research and trial and error how to accomplish this. I know women in the military that just barely clear 100lbs, and my favorite quote from one of them is this..."I may be small, but I am mighty". Every person has some skill, even if it's hidden, that can lead them to success in a difficult situation such as this.

From a viewer who wishes to remain anonymous: "The bear is still not cooperating" - hehe. Just watched half of your new survival challenge E01. Hilarious the part where both of you are trying to catch grasshoppers. And I love the part where you talk to the turtle and try to tell him not to stay on the road. Funny, but do you also realize it is an animisitc approach to talk to animals [or plants, or orther "persons"] like they were persons, like they were humans? After having visited Corsica this summer with my wife [collecting kilos of pine resin for my little balm production] and seen lots of stone age sites, I read some books about celtic religion, and then dived deeper into animism, the basis upon which not only the native American religions are based, but nearly all human ones, before christianity tried to put their own religion into the memory hole. I'm currently reading "Primitive Culture" by Sir Edward Tylor (1871), the "bible" of animism. Before it, I read the ebook* attached: Graham Harvey (2013) - The Handbook Of Contemporary Animism. The articles in it about Siberian and Canadian natives hunters could be very interesting for you. Quote from chapter 13 about the Cree/Yukaghirs in Canada/Siberia: "Hunters employ various tactics of displacement and substitution to conceal the fact that they are the ones responsible for the animal’s violent death, and thus avoid being preyed upon in turn. Immediately after killing the elk, they will make a small, roughly carved wooden figure, which they paint with lines using blood from the dead animal. The figure is said to be a miniature model of the “animal’s killer”. It is hung from a string above the meat and serves to attract the attention of the furious spirit. The spirit, hunters say, will smell the blood of its “child” painted on the figure’s body and attack it. Meanwhile, the hunters can safely butcher the entire animal and transport its meat back to the encampment. The wooden figure, however, is left at the site of the kill as a kind of physical representative of the “murderer” and draws in the anger of the spirit. The ritual performed after killing a bear follows a similar pattern, but it is more elaborate because the danger and fear are greater, and the cost of error more terrifying. Before removing the skin of the bear hunters will blindfold it or poke its eyes out while croaking like a raven (Willerslev & Pedersen 2010: 270). This will make the bear believe that it was the bird that blinded it. Moreover, they will address the bear, saying: “Big Man! Who did this to you? A Russian [or Sakha/Yakut] killed you” (Willerslev 2007: 130). Thus, by various means of trickery, hunters seek to direct the anger of the animal master-spirits against non-Yukaghirs - humans and non-humans alike."

First vid I ever watched of you, and you hooked me instantly :) I wanted to find some minnow recipes... but it seems I won't be boiling them anytime soon :P I have some plans to set up an aquaponics system and I thought maybe some type of minnows would work well. I did find a Laotian recipe where they steam whole freshwater minnows with kaffir lime leaves, chilis, lime juice and fish sauce. I think the trick is to use citrus, salt, and strong herbs and spices to get rid of the horrid bitter taste :) Or, as was suggested before, frying them seems to work well too. Tons of recipes out there where they fry bait whole :)

I'm loving this, good men with guns in the bush. Living the good life - you guys rock. More "bushcrafters" and "survivalists" need to watch these. Even though I lack the detailed knowledge of wild edibles you guys have, understanding the concept here and what happens to the human body in a situation like this... HUGELY beneficial information!

We're the only ones out there trying! It's not enough just to think you can do it...go TRY! Now is the time, while it's easy and you can fall back. Once in...everything is more salient. It's hard to describe the urgency eating becomes.

Thank-you for doing this. Some of the best stuff out there. Got to admit though that I am bummed about seeing the store-bought seasoning as I was hoping for stuff from your garden to supplement the foraging for this season.

Ah yeah, that would have been great. I have done some research on seasonings and the ones Natives used were pretty darn bad LOL. The Europeans hatted them when they got here hahha

Great show ! I've eaten minnows lots of times since i was a kid ... never boiled though. it started when i went with my grandpa and caught bait for (real fish) we spread pickling salt on a sheet of plywood spread the minnows out rolled them around, put more salt on them and dried them in the sun turning a few times... i was told people don't eat these. but they smelled so good , when no one was looking i tried a little nibble which turned into more then a hand full . i was hooked . i recommend them preserved that way, delicious . for a treat but to much salt for a meal . soak in 2 changes of water ... very good with potatoes .

I'm glad. I think you will enjoy the full series. Launched this way on purpose. It really lets the concept sink in and for people to internalize what's happening and the struggle we face trying to live. We unfortunately don't have all the time in the world to reflect in the moment, so it's a bit different, but neither is time so compressed as it is with an edited video.

Try and keep the mushroom broth next time, especially since you have salt! You could just keep a jar of it around and use it with your beaver catch whenever it comes.

Another great job guys! You so could have eaten that turtle. Butcher it. Then You harvest the leeches off for fish bait. Scald the turtle so it doesn't tear you up. Then process the meat. Turtles may be protected in your area. We can hunt them in Michigan they have a season. But it has been many years since I ate one. I quit hunting them it bothered me to kill them. They live longer than I do. Great video. Keep em coming.

They closed the season this year in Ontario, forever. I think the population is fine too, just not enough people doing it and caving to outside pressure...but I don't know that much about the turtle hunt to judge.

Culinary wise mushrooms are typically able to be fried without any added fats, they'll release liquid, then dry out a little, release oils to help fry. Granted on a survival aspect that also means that you will be loosing those extra nutrients. Nice balanced decision to boil.

I actually just had some minnows before watching this. haha. Awesome video! I read that minnows can break down really fast. as soon as I catch some, I rinse them thoroughly. The first batch I caught, I just tossed in flour and fried whole. They were delicious. The second batch, I salted them and stashed them in the fridge to cure. Afterwards, I seasoned and simmered them in a soy sauce/sugar/sesame oil sauce. I add them to beans and rice like that and it's great. Or if you salt them and dry them out whole, you can make a powder with which you can make a soup stock similar to dashi. I definitely recommend not giving up on whole minnows! ...Then again, the ones I've eaten were glass minnows, so maybe they're different.
