This entire series is about catch n cook!
Welcome to Season 2 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. As last year, the rules are simple, come out as heavy or heavier than going in to crown ourselves victors.
This year we decided to be more mobile and we came in ready with a plan. Find out if we can put turn a year's worth of experiments and learning into success and thrive in our epic journey of survival!
In this video we eat the entire rabbit including the stomach, brain and organs.

*Season 4 is LIVE NOW!* ru-vid.com/group/PLDg2Qmw9pKide9c13X43xLM_b0Gr_VbR_ *Subscribe NOW, hit the bell icon so you get NOTIFIED!* *TO THE VIEWER, snowshoe hare or varying hare are very plentiful in the North. They are not the lowest on the food chain, but play a significant role, none the less. Hare are food to foxes and wolves, but also prey on plants. If they become too abundant, they will destroy balance. Removing a few hare does not harm the population, in fact, it makes the overall population stronger and places man neatly into the food chain. By removing a few hare, there is less stress on plants and therefore more food for the remaining population. Hare hunting is centered around the fall and winter precisely because it helps keep numbers down going into the harsh winter. Rather than have all the hare die, a few helps to keep the stress down keeping the rest of the hare alive.* *FULL SERIES PLAYLIST:* ru-vid.com/group/PLDg2Qmw9pKieZifUoxhoiv6DqqKc6oGMP&disable_polymer=true

Really nice video, thx a lot. In germany we have hazelnuts like everywhere. Usually we roast them in a pot over campfire, so the husks get loose quite easily, the fat is becoming more accessible and they taste way better after roasting. Thanks Presty! People today are natural complainers. I try to adjust and let it roll, but it's pretty hard to educate anyone or even bring them into our line of sight...everyone knows everything now a days - and we're supposed to be masters of the universe. We're just out there trying, and learning from our mistakes.

Hey! Love your channel. The hazels, what we did as kids picking those (we were in Northern New-Brunswick) threw those in a pillow case with the husks, then whack them on pavement a few times. The husks will shed! Also, if you just put them in the sun for a few hours, they should turn brown and easier to peel! :) I didn't know they were in your neck of the woods! I can't find them in the Capital!
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 6 лет назад
Cool trick! I'll have to try that. We ended up drying them out a bit, and they do turn brown, but it took more than a few days. Jeremy had them out after a few months and they were still pretty green. Hard to make a living on that, but it's certainly worth a go.

Looks like the best natural "fruit roll-up" you could eat! That rabbit looked a bit small, but as a pest, it needed to go. Glad you didn't waste the meat. I miss hunting snowshoe rabbit in Galena, AK., and cotton-tail and jack rabbits in Arizona. I prefer the snowshoe, they are bigger and tastier. Sadly, rabbits hardly have any fat. Add a chunk of bear fat (or any fat) into the pot, and you're on the way to perfection. Throw some locally harvested veggies and herbs and you're eating in heaven. Keep up the awesome videos! -Trystian
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 6 лет назад
For sure, lean as they come. Most wild animals are about the same, that's what makes bear and moose so welcome since their fat is very desirable and can be very useful in other dishes like deer, hare, fish, etc. We don't realize how often we really use extra fats in our diet to add to other things...it's really vital if we don't want to spend our whole day just eating.

Wood beard my family collects hazel nuts every year I have found that if you grab the long thin part you called the tail there are no burs that's how I pluck them from the tree and husk them easily no gloves needed. Also we in Washington have what's called a filbert nut a close cousin of the hazelnut that is larger in size (more meat) and has no burs you may look and see if you have them up there? Either one can be soaked in water to make a nut milk or roasted and ground to make a nut flour just food for thought (no pun intended) Haha good luck on the beaver they are very tasty I still have some hind quarters in the freezer from last year going to bone it out and use the meat trappers recipe to make "steam boat" beaver this weekend

Avoid blowing down the barrel of the Shotty as any condensation in your breath can promote rust inside your barrel. It's tempting to clear the smoke after discharging a spent cartridge but to do this right before storing the Shotty for a few months can lead to pitting inside the barrel, particularly on a cold morning...

Adding nuisance animals to your available food seems like a real benefit. Are either of you considering getting your own trapper license to enhance your personal food gathering capabilities in the future?
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 6 лет назад
I've certainly thought about it, but again, stupid laws. If we had one, we'd be stuck on a trapline...IF we could get one, which takes years of applying for. We could trap nuisance animals though, on PRIVATE property only. It's really a big mess. I'd like to do a series on a trapline though, and do fish and trapped animals, that would be fun.

Me too, and it was way too hot to even use the last part of the season :( Have to wait for hard water now.

I just came back from Texas survival trip and ate easily 20 lbs of mulberries...soooo good!

The Wooded Beardsman just got back from the Arkansas river hike and found a huge mulberry tree completely loaded...it was great, however the tiny black beetles I accidently ate tasted like a stink bug lmao

Ants and crickets taste awesome when roasted with garlic and green onions. Season with sea salt or soy sauce. Delicious!

This is what survival looks like in my neck of the woods too lol. Harsh, unforgiving and filled with bugs. The annoying sort, not the "almost tastes like an almond' variety. Most people would just resort to poaching at your point, good on you for sticking to nuisance animals. I hope you know how to deal with the musk glands in beaver though.

Great video! 23:42 RE on why you are obsessed with eating a beaver. It's wired into your biology ... That and eating small animals for nutrition.

Awesome video guys...bugs and brains...the missing fat content link to maintaining your weight....That is exactly how the natives here on Vancouver Island maintained there weight when game was scarce. Salmon skin, brains and bugs....
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 6 лет назад
Exactly right, the brains and skin of salmon would be huge. Discard the protein and just go for the goods.
