These fish have always been great table fare, but have lost favor as the "Catch and Release" campaign has been very popular. Across the county, this is a very sustainable fishery and taking a few for the table is needed to maintain healthy populations. This is a great largemouth bass (non-fried) recipe cooked on cast iron and coals. Bass and Grits. Catch clean and cook.

Everyone wants to know why we kept the larger fish. Well, it got hooked in that bad spot behind the tongue and bled out. I rather eat him than leave it out there for the gators. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone brother. If you're within the fish and wildlife regulations then I say grill it up man. And to everyone who's hating on him let the fish and game wardens regulate the fisheries. That's what the regs are for. If they were threatened they would change the laws to protect them much like they did here in Florida with Red Snapper.

i think it’s because they are caught for fun in local ponds(most times) where they are put there and people have trash and the public pond/lake looks dirty at times. but if it was wild i would totally go for it

This is so damn southern, that’s how I know it’s gonna be good. Don’t think I’m being sarcastic. Black or white, southerners just know how to cook like nobody’s business. No white jokes about not putting seasoning when it comes to southern people.
@danclay8229
@danclay8229 4 года назад
Funny you would say that. Watching it I was thinking "I don't know where this guy is from but it is not from the South." No one would prepare the fish like that in the South. Not the woods part of the South anyway. Everything is way too "gourmet".

Hi Backwoods Gourmet: I just want to share that I really enjoy watching your video's and cooking recipes. Thank you so much for doing what you do for the enjoyment of your viewers. This dish is simple but just looked so good. It reminds me of my 103 year old grandmother (still has all her mental acuities-sharp as a tack). For 40 years she lived with my Grandpop in South Carolina and they had a huge veggie garden out back of their house on several acres of land. She used to grow okra and many other veggies and just made the most delicious homemade veggie soup I have ever tasted. Grandpop turned me on to having grits for breakfast with a little butter and honey and also as a side dish for dinner with a hint of cheese. The scallions are a terrific addition to your grits. Yummy!!!

@oldpolak5203

If your deep frying canola is cheap and does not add any oily taste. But for panfry , bacon fat or lard is the best. I tried sunflower but its expensive and breaks down to fast. Can do peanut oil . Ive deep fried fish, pork , beef , and french fries in the same canola and not had any taste transfer.

There are small glands on the sides of the fish that need to be removed if you are not a fan of fresh water fish. A friend showed me how to do it...after that my wife loves fresh bass!! She never ate fresh water fish before that because of the taste. I live on the shore line of lake Ontario..but lake Erie is only about 40 min away, and they have some of the best small mouth fishing I have ever seen. At the end of Ontario here where the St. Lawrence water way is there are some monster large mouth. No like fla of course, but still good eating fish!
