Awesome catch. Whenever I've targeted them, the bite seems to slow down when the sun is high. It took several missed strikes and thrown hooks for me to finally land one. They have become my favorite freshwater fish to catch and eat in my area. It's too bad they get such bad press. Studies have shown that they are not causing a big impact on the Potomac river as seen in the media. It's too bad they dig in the mud over the winter. Spring can't get hear quick enough.

I'd recently just moved for NJ to MD and I love fishing Mattawoman Creek for LM bass in the summer. First tume I'd seen a snakehead was from a kayaker at the launch in Indian Head. I haven't seen them in the non-tidal section yet , but at route 210 at the Piscataway Creek was a different story!

I caught a few this past summer and bled them out and everything, but to me they were just kinda average. Part of me thinks they're promoted as so unbelievably delicious to encourage people to kill them and keep them (which people should). But perhaps I need to try them again (and I plan to) because your reaction is so genuine.

Cod is kinda flavorless and spongy not dense which is why it’s a cheaper saltwater fish I guess.

Is that the same fish that is considered a invasive species in Florida? I thought they were native to Asian countries not North America.
@otroflores91
@otroflores91 5 лет назад
Yes and yes.
@handyandqu
@handyandqu 5 лет назад
yes. though it can look similar to Burbot (northern US and canada) and Bowfin. Snake Head (there are a few different species) are from africa and asia, where they are delicacies and have other traditions associated with them, which encourages people from those countries to release them into the wild. From my understanding in most states it's illegal to re release a snake head once caught, it must be killed.
@thedoomofred5174
@thedoomofred5174 5 лет назад
handyandqu, I have serious concerns for the person who would mistake a burbot for a snakehead. Bowfin yes, but not burbot.
@finnafishfl
@finnafishfl 5 лет назад
No and yes. The species down in Florida is the bullseye snakehead. The one invasive up north is northern snakehead. Different fish, same genus
@Kruegernator123
@Kruegernator123 5 лет назад
You are right; they are native to Southeast Asia. But the invasive species in Florida is the "bulls-eye snakehead", which have several bulls-eye-like spots on their body. They look very similar to bowfin, which have a bulls-eye spot on their tail fin, but nowhere else on their body. Bulls-eye snakeheads are tropical, so they have not made it outside of Florida. The other invasive snakehead species in the US is the "northern snakehead", (native to northern China, Russia and Korea), which are larger and more cold tolerant. They are found in the Mid-Atlantic states now.

Aggressive, check. Invasive, check. No size or bag limits, check. Good tasting, check. If their temperature range is from Florida to Maryland, I can't help but wonder what will happen when they hit the Mississippi drainage. Would they decimate the Asian Carp that are clotting up the waterways? Or, would the cure be worse than the disease?
