Catch Me If You Can's Frank Abagnale - Perpetrator of the Ultimate Hoax? w/ Alan C. Logan

Most of us are familiar with the critically acclaimed film called Catch Me If You Can, based on the autobiography of legendary confidence man Frank Abagnale. It's the story of a brazen teenage imposter who through charm and intellect was able to pass as an attorney, a doctor, a pilot and a university professor in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
My guest, Alan C. Logan, has done extensive research into Frank Abagnale's well-known and near-mythical narrative, found it riddled with holes, and lays out some of what he has discovered for us on this week's episode of Most Notorious.
Alan Logan's book is called "The Greatest Hoax on Earth: Catching Truth, While We Can", and can be ordered in bookstores, online retailers, and through his website at: www.greatesthoax.com/

"It may have nothing to do with profit" (1:16:40). Something important to remember about pathological personalities like Abagnale is that most of them do not necessarily do it for recognition (although I'm sure they do not at all mind this very natural biproduct). Ultimately, they just do it because they feel like it.

The true narrative is not even close to the movie narrative, book and even his own conviction convaluted story on Google Talks LOL. Its shameful Abagnale Jr got away for this long and make money from a hoax tale. His good at telling stories, I'll give them that but not none to truely be inspired by. 🙄

Personally I don’t mind embellishment of the truth in a movie for the sake of making it more interesting, even if they claim it’s “based on a true story” that doesn’t mean every frame of the movie happened the way it’s shown or happened at all. That being said, the book is sold as a biography I believe and that is problematic for me. It’s especially a problem if the guy is telling lies to audiences for money under the guise that it’s 100% true. Folks love a good story, he is a con man at heart after all so it’s hard to say this is surprising. Kind of a let down though.

Wow! Great podcast! Absolutely gobsmacked listening to these details! I'm hoping an audiobook will be published, and narrated by Mr. Logan.. I loved the movie and Frank Abignale's book. It was astounding that the FBI hired a convicted felon; or how Frank conversed with physicians without having knowledge of basic human anatomy.

The movie is lots of fun. But some of the hardest professions to pretend to do are medicine and the law. Too many technical and short hand terms to fake it for more than a few day IF you talk to others in the same profession. I work with doctors. My uncle and a good friend are state Supreme Court and federal judges. No one could fake out a real doctor in a hospital during rounds or talking legal cases with other lawyers. But the movie is lots of fun. I’m glad the truth is coming out. Listen to the Pretend podcast. Javier tells the true story of Frank in his series.

Whenever someone mentions the name Spears I can’t help thinking about Jamie Spears the former CONservator of Britney Spears. Sometimes there’s weird correlations in this world. Great CONversation though. Makes me think. When the topic goes into Social Work as he wants to go into he knows he doesn’t know anything about the profession I believe him. It’s a ton of academic research and assignments for years of higher education to call yourself a Social Worker. He could do so much harm to kids if he did some fringe stuff to them. Can’t stand that kind of individual. Ultimately I’m glad he didn’t get much work done. It’s almost unimaginable how much pain and trauma he would do to kids.

Has anyone written a book on Krishna Venta , he was the leader of a California religious group in the 1940s and 1950s. Venta founded his WKFL Fountain of the World cult in Simi Valley, California. A member set off a bomb and killed him and others in 1958. I personally know the people who live in his former residence in the compound where he was killed. Charles Manson was on Spahn Ranch literally a few minutes drive away and had some connection with the religious compound in the 60's.

2 years later and millions still believe the story and it was sold as an amazing youthful indiscretion that turned into a redemption story but the majority of the crimes were committed when frank was an adult....many with orgs that served children and there was no redemption story....just a continuation of the con does that movie sell? and while google now has a disclaimer at the start of the vid and in the description, it still claims that frank is an expert in financial and cyber security

Also want to ad that I think Logan only scratched the surface. This man's Dad was heavily in debt to the IRS and probably the NY mob. I think he was sent out by the father to raise money to pay off these debts, that story has never really been told straight up. Yes, Abagnale is probaly full of shit about a lot of things but he has also left a lot "unsaid". The facts that he never mentioned would probably make a better story!

There is something very troubling about this. Abagnale’s story was really one of redemption. With these facts, there is no redemption. Roots, the 1977 TV blockbuster, was also a hoax, a fact that is generally unknown by the public. Will be interesting to see if this is ignored the way Alex Haley’s lies were ignored. I guess the story is sometimes too good to be true and people want a story and redemption and are willing to be lied to.

Both of you motivated by money. One is a small time forger to parlayed it into a celebrity speaking gig, book, movie, and TV appearances. He doesn't want everyone to know every low he's stooped to or creepy thing he did. He wants to tell his story his way, the same manner that anyone on earth ever did since cuneiform. The other gets his money by embarrassing the 1st man and "disrespecting the game." His story is all about pointing out every nasty bit of truth about another person and spreading it far and wide. Who would you rather be, the guy conning women or the guy running along behind him waving his arms and telling anyone who will listen what a bad guy he is? 😅 Answer: Neither!
