Does any of you guys ever fish with mosquito flies?

I have in stillwater, both dry and nymph, conventional rod.

Only with slow moving water as a dry fly and from a size 14-18 sized hook. I tie them with a black head, medium tan body, use black and white rooster hackle. I lay down a small tail when making the body before adding the hackle, then finish with a white ribbed body either with fine ribbon or white thread. Dealers choice. . So...its just very small tenkara fly that I use dry fly techniques. The real question is, can you make a mosquito larva fly and fish it like a micro killer bug variant?

I live in Newfoundland, Canada and just minutes from my house I can fish approx half a mile of a small pocket stream and use only size 14 mosquito flies. They are killer as long as there are trout in the stream. I can catch 20-30 trout in an hour anywhere from 3-4 inches to 14 inches. Brookies, browns and tigers. Of course all with my tenkara set up. SOOOO MUCH FUN!!!

Last time I took my boy fishing and it was slooow. And all of sudden he yelled I got a bite! I was like nice! And he said it’s a mosquito bite not a fish bite 😂

Got to say, mosquitoes and black flies can ruin a fishing trip. Amazed that you hooked up so many, and surprised by the size of some of them., in such a short time. Always a good start to Saturday when you post a new video. Thanks.

Lots of bugs mean good fishing. Me and an old friend used to spend quite a lot of time smacking the mosquitoes into the water and watching all the little fish come up and eat them.

@Tenkara Addict shortened gill plates are a symptom of water pollution particularly from mining runoff. You might report this to the Idaho Fish and Game so they can protect this beautiful stream. I was just reading an article by a Canadian biologist, Tina Portman who researched this in the Elk River in Canada.

One tip when fishing beaver ponds. Always try to release the fish in the pond you caught them out of. When you crowd the fish it makes survival harder for them. They can't move around in that stream as well as they would like to. If they can't find food they can't move to a new spot in search of food. Not to mention leaving ponds fishless, which isn't beneficial to the fisherman. Not to mention that out west you can't always count on high water to allow the trout to move at times. flooding those dams might be something that happens once every 6 years or more.

I stumbled on your channel recently and have really enjoyed your content. So much so i purchased a rod and have caught a couple small trout on a very small creek near me. Wondering if you would like to add a little more instruction. Such as identifying trout and defining charteristics. Length of rod and other equipment. How to find streams? Do you refer to the states stocking schedule? Equipment reviews etc. Do you ever use a float tube on bigger water? Have you ever tried a rod holster? Would save setting you nice rod on the rocks plus keeps your rod handy. Thanks for your efforts. Im watching.

I am new to tenkara having been a southern bass, panfish, and catfisherman my whole life (75 yrs). You speak of dry flies and soft hackle wet. I fly fish traditionally for the above, and have used streamers, but can you explain the use differences and techniques. We have a few stocked trout streams in Kentucky and a very few and hard to reach natural brook trout streams. My son , gr'son and I are acquiring Tenara equipment to ply those streams. Also, I recently viewed the 'rod, line, and fly' tutorial. I would love to see that one updated; I know there has been changes in two years. Thanks for the info and entertainment. Bill from Kentucky: new sub.

Try a olive wooly bugger. I cast it out and once it is wet enough it will sink (unless you get a bead head version) and I cast into the lake and pull it back to me or along the edge of the water (best way) I have caught bass and perch.

I posted a comment a little while ago, but it seems to have gone “poof” into the ethers (perhaps because I listed the website for fly tying yarn?). In any event, the video was awesome; but, alas, mosquitoes do indeed go with the territory. I wanted to share that it’s possible to tie #16 and #18 mosquito / midge kebari style on small scud hooks. I’ve used camel and thistledown yarns, fine wire for ribbing and either a small amount of grey hackle, or starling soft hackle.
@TenkaraAddict

Mosquito flies do look a lot like stiff hackle kebari, so it makes sense! Thanks Michael.

If anything, it's the opposite. I prefer fishing smaller zoom rods more and more. A 12 or 13 foot rod is too long for my favorite kinds of creeks.
