In this video, I go back to basics chasing bream on lures in Perth's Swan River. I also say the word nonetheless far too many times. Enjoy.
Rod: Millerods Brawler
Reel: Daiwa TD Black 2500D
6lb line, 4/5lb leader.

@dfjmadventures Not sure how conducive it is for filming but if you can, hop in and wade around. I've been consistently catching good sizes in decent numbers when I get in the water.

Hey mate, messaged you on IG a couple weeks ago...Have started to get the hang of lure fishing more with 3 caught flatheads over the month on Zman grubz 2.5inch motor oil and berkley gulp yabbies in camo colour: PB and first ever flatty @ 47cm, 2nd one was 35cm, and 3rd was at 39cm.....be nice to catch other species too as I learn to get good on hardbodies, blades, jigs etc....can catch tailor but thats trolling with the dinghy....
@LightTackleAnglerWA
@LightTackleAnglerWA 9 месяцев назад
hey man! I only found out about message requests recently aha and youre not in them for some reason! glad to hear you're getting into some fish. 47cm is a great flatty!

love it, can you recommend the best spot for flathead in the Swan River
@LightTackleAnglerWA
@LightTackleAnglerWA 9 месяцев назад
thanks mate, honestly not really a best spot but i'd say dropoffs are actually more productive than flats. Also don't hesitate to look slightly further upstream for flathead rather than just the well known downstream spots.

It's funny, bream fight so well that when you hook one after a bunch of flatties you instinctively think "big fish" regardless of the actual size. After catching what essentially feels like seaweed with head shakes even a small bream gets your heart going.
@LightTackleAnglerWA
@LightTackleAnglerWA 9 месяцев назад
true! although on very shallow flats flathead can often pull some drag :)
@adamimberti6948
@adamimberti6948 9 месяцев назад
@LightTackleAnglerWA For sure. I find when they first see me they'll run and then when I walk them back to the shore and I start getting close they'll run again.... not as frantic as a bream fight but still a lot of fun.

@@adamimberti6948You're so wrong lol, Bartail flathead fight very well for a flathead species once large enough. You've got to remember 2 things, 1 they need warmth to get their metabolism going (hence the nickname "lizards" and why they don't fight as hard in deeper or cooler water as they do in summer on the flats), and 2 and just as importantly, you cannot compare length, but weight, a 30cm Bartail is an extremely light fish, similar in weight to a 22cm bream, would a 22cm bream do much?.. If you were comparing properly, pound for pound, a 30cm bream would be a 42cm flathead, and a 38cm bream would be a 50cm flathead, and I can tell you with absolute certainty, a warmed up 42cm bartail flathead in shallow water fights harder than any 28-30cm Swan bream... Any other flathead species and I'd agree with you, but Bartails in summer on the flats go very well on light tackle, and Swan bream are not even close to the hardest fighters in the bream world, if you really want to know what a hard fighting bream feels like, fish the Mandurah system and adjacent rivers, or the Blackwood in summer, Swan bream don't compare in the slightest.
@adamimberti6948
@adamimberti6948 9 месяцев назад
@cozab5487 Thanks for flathead lesson. But again, flathead don't fight that hard.... that's not a controversial statement.
@cozab5487
@cozab5487 9 месяцев назад
@@adamimberti6948 I never said they "fight that hard", I said they fight harder than what you were portraying and it largely depends on time of year, in no world does a "tiny bream make you think you have something big after catching flathead" lol, are you only catching 30's? Or only in winter/spring before they've warmed up? Because any bigger during warm weather and you definitely wouldn't be coming up with a comment like that, especially if you're talking about the same water way as this, Perth's Swan river, in which case the species of Flathead that live there (which are actually Yellowtail flathead by the way, though part of the "Bartail" species complex so we just call them Bartail anyway) are quite possibly the hardest fighting flathead species in Australia, and the bream are average fighters at best! Again many bream populations DO fight harder than any flathead, especially if you want to get into the Yellowfin Bream side of things, or even if you want to compare to others like the Bluespot or smaller Duskies, but Swan river Black bream DO NOT fight harder than a FULLY warmed up Bartail(Yellowtail) flathead pound for pound (key point), simple as that. I literally fished for them all weekend just gone, over a dozen 40-50cm bartails and some solid bream, and the bream struggled to pull a click of drag, while most of the better flathead absolutely screamed line off the reel and held water well, case closed lol.

thanks mate. taking a break from fishing whilst prepping for my wedding but will be back at some point soon. any 7 foot (roughly) bream rod (1-3 or 2-4 kg) will do well but this was a millerods brawler.

How long do you usually have your leader fishing in the swan mate? Feels like I need to have 10 rod lengths, the fish are much smarter than me.
@LightTackleAnglerWA
@LightTackleAnglerWA 7 месяцев назад
as a general rule, 1 rod length with plastics and 2 with lures with trebles
@nathanaeln
@nathanaeln 7 месяцев назад
Do you just have seperate hard body and a seperate plastics rod to alternate between or do you change the leader whenever you want to fish with plastics or hardbodies?

What do you think about double clutches in the swan river
@LightTackleAnglerWA
@LightTackleAnglerWA 9 месяцев назад
great lures, smallest 2 sizes (48 and 60) are good for bream and flathead, 75 and 95 would be great on flathead and tailor! not quite as versatile as plastics but generally in summer fish feed a bit higher in the water column so dont always have to be on the bottom (besides when you're fishing for flathead, usually). Great lures for the flats in particular.
