Globally, tuna stocks are heavily over fished. But the fishermen in the Maldives - catching their skipjack by pole and line - are giving their skipjack tuna a brighter future. Greenpeace www.greenpeace.org
so important to fish this way and allow the growth of our fish populations instead of thinking that they are there for the taking without andy thought of sustainability... thank you for keeping our eyes open
I will have supported green piece by the day our lives are clean and trust I think the world will be changed by your activites Thanks Green piece keep your going!!
Fish 4 ever was the canned tuna company but was only sold in the UK if you don't live there you could probably buy it on amazon or request for a local organic store to try to sell it. Maybe even get your community to sign a petition and ask for that product at most of your stores would be great for that company and the environment hope this helps
This technique was popular in the pacific islands during WWII as a way to feed the native populations on captured island using landing crafts for fishing boats and native fisherman.
This is a good educational video, I don't see why people make such a big fuss over it. It's pole and line caught which is slightly time consuming than net catching although it provides us with a better sustainable approach for future stocks. Tuna is one of the most favourite fish in the U.K, we consume over 12bn tins a year and it's got to come from somewhere like the Maldives.
For all you people nagging about of they should use a net, a net would catch mostly bie-catch (fish they don't want and would throw back dead) and it would destroy reefs. With the poles there is almost zero bie-catch. I know this because I live in nove-scotia and have oceans as a class on its own.
I think this is a much better method than the nets so they do not have any bie-catch so all the sharks that would have been caught if they used a net are still roaming free.
This method of fishing is better than nets so animals that are not targeted do not get caught in a net and usually, the animals that are not wanted that are caught in a net are out of water for too long before they throw them back, so basically they are throwing a dead carcass into the water. That is why this method is better, if you are against bie-catch.
Hawai`i Fishermens fished off what we call the "SandPan Boat" same as what you do and we make our own barbless hooks with feathers. Awesome vid, mahalo....
+Jeremiah Giles> Our fishermens back in the early dasys before you and I were born. The abundant of "Aku", "Ahi" & "Mahimahi" were caught by these what we call "Aku Boats" (SanPan Boats) that were flat-bottom and use bait fishes to lure the bigger fishes up to the surface. Our bait fish are called "Nehu"....
This helps a lot with the tuna fishing companies the people in the video has enough tuna to feed a lot of people. And the other fishing companies are WAY over the limit
Great work guys!! Fantastic to see sustainable eco friendly fishing for a change! This style of fishing doesn't catch unwanted catch, which gets thrown out and wasted with nett fishing. Also, net fishing nets the whole school, never to be seen again, where with poling, some fish escape and the school will grow again in numbers. I have bought skipjack tuna before from coles and it tastes fantastic! Keep up the great work lads,I'm happy to buy these tasty tuna off you by the bucket!
AA BB Yes,I'm very worried about mercury poisoning, however,i still buy these pole and line caught tuna,to support these sustainable fishing operators. Hopefully if they are profitable, others will realise they should be doing the same thing, instead of unsustainable fishing methods
Are u even a human? A normal human would try to stop eatin runs after watching this and U still have the gut to post this comment? I take my hat off for u
+Fuddler When I went pole and line fishing I went on barefoot. Sometimes to avoid slipping u can wear rubber boots. The line is about approximately two or three times longer than the pole.
Line is usually as long as the pole, Maybe a feet longer. Maldivian here. There is very little chance in hooking your fellow fishermen, but it does happen although not very often.
Its a good thing that they use only Pole to catch fish. . unlike the large vessels heavily filtering everything through their nets. . .and discarding the small ones too. . .
hahah I don't know how someone could call tuna gross. :) you should try it with pomegranate souce and lemon souce, it takes the smell away, if that's the thing. any other fish, I shy away but tuna, I eat it whole head to tail (after inners cleaned of course)
Would love for this to be supported and I agree that sustainability is the best but I cannot see it happening what with the world population growing at such an astronomical rate. The world organisation has made many leaps since this video was made and restriction have been put into place to help with depleting tuna numbers.
M.K.Gandhi said"The mother earth has the capacity to fulfill every person's need but couldnot fulfill one person's greed" so we must live , always careful to ecology & environment.
And it is He who subjected the sea for you to eat from it tender meat and to extract from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships plowing through it, and [He subjected it] that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.(Q.S. 16 : 14)
To deplete the world of tuna and give jobs to people at the same time.... PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Call me Daddy hello friend who are you I am Hamza I am manufacturer and exporter of all kinds of fishing shirt and best quality do you have a need please reply me my whatapp namber 03354486991
2:47 - "It's a modern fish processing plant, operated to the straightest regulations of health and safety" 4:35 - Flattening the product with a tool but with bare hands. 4:46 - Throwing cooked tunas from one container to another using bare hands(full contact) Sure the product could be sterilized later on, but how is this 'OPERATED TO THE STRAIGHTEST REGULATIONS'????? Sure they washed their hands, their palms don't sweat because they are Maldivians. When I looked at the way this 'managing director' Charles Redfern walks up to his tuna(3:44), I seriously thought it was a joke. No wonder 'Fish 4 Ever' is having a hard time competing in the market.
How exactly is this sustainable? They claim it's very selective, but they just pull in every tuna that bites. They say they leave the juveniles, but all of those fish looked very small. Most of those fish were under 20 pounds while they can grow to over a thousand.
Shut the fuck up. Most of the people on RU-vid don't know what the hell they're talking about. Why do you feel the need to insult me like a stupid little bitch?
