I absolutly agree with your description. My hope for an happy ending for them is they end up faking his death and give him a new identy as Potemkin (although I think he is the inspiration for Grigor) or Zubov (Catherine's real last lover) though I don't think it is going to happen. Still hope is the last one to die. I do wonder if Catherine's other children will also appear since in real life she had 2-3 more after Paul but again this show takes historic accuracy into a black hole and for once I love it for it.
