A great missal as well-- what got me watching these videos on missals is I discovered a very old missal I own (picked up at a used book store years ago for 50 cents) and then shelved at hime. It’s a 1951 Father Stedman Sunday Missal. It is in very delicate condition- at the time I wasnt going to Latin Masses but wanted to buy it so it would be safe from being stuck in an old store and possibly tossed in a trash can. Plenty are on ebay (pretty cheap). A nice version to have as a collectable I would suppose - many go back into the 1940s. Some are in great shape too.

Good review, thanks! Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the Fr. Lasance Missal.

Fr. Lasance Missal was my first Missal but gave it away. It was too big and more than was needed for attendance at the TLM. Fr. Lasance is like a Missal, Prayerbook, catechism, and devotional all wrapped up in one. I know many who use it. The three I recommend to those who are regular attendees at the TLM and want Missal that provide all the basics go with the Angelus, Baronius, or New Marian Missals. They are more functional and affordable. I also was a bit taken aback at the price tag of the Lasance relative to it quality. Caveat: The Fr. Lasance went through a new binding and some revisions since the edition I bought in 2005. So the quality might be better. But the three I mentioned above any priest can fulfill the entire season of Mass if needs be. That's enough for me.

@@justinreany1514 Got to agree, it's a bit of brick! :) When I first got it, the binding was quite tight, but I've managed to soften it up a little since then. Recently I've been thinking about the Baronius Press one.

@@DavidWilson-hd6iz Baronius, is the best quality one I think. But very stiff an requires a "breaking-in" period.
@justinreany1514
@justinreany1514 7 месяцев назад
@@DavidWilson-hd6iz Baronius is the best quality out there for Catholics in USA. As one who has a great affinity for the Anglican patrimony I see the quality and attention to detail in Anglican materials. The Bibles from Camridge/Oxford are pretty standard with Smyth sewing, line match, variety of leathers, ribbons, etc. It seems that Catholic materials are happy at passing mid-level quality for the highest in Cstholicism. But things are as they are.

This missal is by far the best for the 1962 TLM. It is essentially the exact same as the Baronius Press version but contains the ritual for all seven sacraments which I found invaluable. It is also less bulky. Wield this with a St. Andrew Missal and your set to be a rad trad cat.

This is my favorite 1962 Roman Missal overall. Others have points they excell in but aren't an overall package. I love the Baronius Press Missal leather but it's layout (print) bothered me for some reason. But it was a close runner-up for me behind Angelus Press. Another runner-up that I liked is the New Marian Missal. I know the Fr. Lasance Missal is used by many but it was a brick and more than I needed for attendance of the TLM and basic devotions. But the Angelus is laid out so well and so streamlined. So functional too. And, it was put together by the standard bearers of the traditional movement - SSPX!

You make an interesting point about the Father Lasance. I have yet to review it. But who wants to carry a huge brick like that to mass?
@justinreany1514
@justinreany1514 7 месяцев назад
@@ConvincedCatholicism you can immediately spot someone who carries it to Mass. It is so apparent. Hey...if it works for them, it works for them. Everyone has their own standards and needs. Just happy they are going to TLM.

i have the Angelus Press cowhide edition and it’s by far one of my missal because i do have the Father Lassance edition, don’t get me wrong Father Lassance is superior but it’s easier to manage in your hand with the angelus press

What’s great about the Latin Mass is this Mass form has been done since as early at late 100 AD (or maybe very early 200AD) and has had minor revisions over a few centuries.. the Mass of the Centuries. Such a historical rite. The Novos Ordo is in its infancy. I grew up in the Latin Mass to about age 9. Was Baptized pre Vatican 2, but from the First Communion onwards- Novus Ordo. I remember (barely) attending Latin Mass. started going to Latin Mass again during late 90s at a Diocese in Virginia (authorized) and then again in Louisiana recently when we moved here. I too attend both Rites. TLM is incredibly reverent.. especially a high Mass. I l advise people that are not used to the Latin mass to not bother using a missal for a few visits just so that they can soak in the beauty the smells and the sounds - use your senses to participate in the mass for a while, and then gradually incorporate either the pew missal or your own. TLM is a beautiful historical Mass. Seek one out if not in your diocese.. or an Eastern Rite as well. :)

That history is just objectively false, the average 7th century Roman would think a good Latin NO is more familiar than a TLM
@TheRomanOrthodox
@TheRomanOrthodox 8 месяцев назад
@@austinkent8811 So is that one. I figure that a 7th century Roman would probably feel more at home in an Eastern Orthodox Church. Sure, there would be some differences, but generally adaptable. The new liturgy would be so insipid, watered-down, etc. to them that they would wonder if it was Christian at all. That said, all liturgies do change. If under the correct spirit of tradition, those changes happen slowly and are faithful to the original. If not, then by bureaucratic wrangling, artificiality, and rupture.
@austinkent8811

@@TheRomanOrthodox uh we have the Ordo Romano primus extant, which is the 7th-8th century Papal liturgy that was sent to Gaul and then heavily adapted with Gallican rite influences before making its way back to Rome. It looks nothing like an Orthodox liturgy, but very much like the NO. Which makes sense given it was the baseline from which the NO was drawing. The reality is that the Roman liturgy has always been extremely simple in comparison to the Eastern rites, which is part of the Roman character.
@TheRomanOrthodox
@TheRomanOrthodox 8 месяцев назад
@@austinkent8811 I have read the Ordo Romanus Primus, and it has no such similarity to the Novus Ordo. It has quite a bit of similarity to the Eastern rites, with some differences being understood and others that have developed later in the Eastern Rites. (For example, the ectenia, or Kyrie, follow on an antiphon, with the collect after that, which is observed in the Eastern Rites, but the West interjected the Major Doxology, which the East makes the last part of Orthros.) In any case, I was not suggesting that the Ordos were the same, just that a person from that time would feel far more at home in an Eastern Liturgy, where all the elements would have been there, rather than the Novus Ordo (or TLM for that matter). I will leave aside the description of the various rituals surrounding the "loaves" from the Ordo Romanus, which only the Eastern Liturgies observe, albeit in different formats.
@austinkent8811
@austinkent8811 8 месяцев назад
@@TheRomanOrthodox if you’ve read the Ordo Romanus Primus then I’m honestly baffled by your statement. It looks basically nothing like an Eastern liturgy, other than the general similarities all liturgical families have. The Ordo follows almost exactly the same lines as the NO: introit, kyrie, Gloria, which was already there at the time, collect, readings, etc. which is quite different from the Eastern liturgies. I think you would be hard pressed to find a single liturgical historian who would find your take even remotely plausible. The average Roman at the time would find a modern Eastern liturgy to be nothing like what they’re used to, but a chanted Latin NO would be extremely familiar.

This missal like the Baronius Press missal does not have the 1955 Holy Week. The only Sunday missal I have seen with both Holy Weeks is the Campion Missal 3rd edition

Before I became Orthodox, the Angelus Press missal was my usual Missal for years, but then I switched to the St. Andrew Missal because it had the older Holy Week liturgy. Angelus Press uses the "new" restored liturgy.
