I love that Gomer brought up how he felt in regards to the requiem mass. I have been discerning Catholicism for 6 months or so, feeling more and more certain each day that it was what God has been revealing and calling me to (through the vessel of Pints with Aquinas 😎). My grampa had passed away a few weeks ago, he was my best friend and basically my dad. He was a life long Catholic, the only one in my family, so we had a funeral mass and although it was very small, it was so gorgeous to witness, I was so in awe by the beauty, and it was what officially confirmed in my heart that this is where I belong - in the Catholic Church.

Your grampa must've been interceding for you to obtain graces from his funeral Mass. May he, and all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Been listening to the show for a few months now as a protestant and have learned so much about Catholicism - so much so, that I realize I have more in common with Catholic teaching than the vast majority of protestant denominations 😂 Lets continue to pray for the unification of the Church - love the content Matt, thanks for all of the time and effort you put into the show!

Same deal here, although "Protestant" never has been a big part of how I think about myself, even though that's been the main part of my religious upbringing (meagre as it was). The only one in my family who put any real "work" into giving my a Christian upbringing was my grandma who died when I was 8 years and 3 days old, she was the only one who ever took me to church on the weekends I was staying with my grandparents, she was Lutheran protestant to a Lutheran church (the National Church of Iceland). But agreed, after a couple of years listening to PwA, I'm getting a lot closer to trotting over to the Catholic Church here in town and asking the priest about it.

They with ears to hear, let them hear: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit! Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry. Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples! These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father! There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you! They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God... Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask: "Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen." Revelation 22:8-9 KJV 8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Acts 2:38 KJV 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Luke 11:13 KJV 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? John 14:21-24 KJV 21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.* 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.* 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.* 3 John 1:11 KJV 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.* 1 John 3:6-10 KJV 6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.* 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.* 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.* 10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.

I prayed the Jesus prayer while giving birth. The pain was getting pretty bad and my mom said "what prayer or scripture can you focus on to get you through this and distract you??" Immediately prayed the Jesus prayer!! And then hail Mary's while the baby crowned lol. Okay enough tmi! But the Jesus prayer helped me through the difficult birth of my child. Praise Jesus. Also I have the St Gregory's prayer book too. Grew up Anglican and now Catholic and this prayer book and such comfort to me!

Not to grift, but yes! I did this in labor with my first. The Jesus prayer was LITERALLY how I breathed through my contractions and my labor became a continuous meditation and prayer. At one point, I remember having this really dark thought, "Why am I doing this, I'll just die one day anyway." My brain immediately picked up a line from Gerard Manley Hopkins poem Carrion Comfort "Despair not feast on thee!" That was enough to pull me back. Went into pushing just a few minutes later. Kid's middle name is now Gerard.

23:55 This is so true. My local parish is 99% families and older people. It's incredibly difficult to find Catholics in their early-to-mid twenties where I am, never mind form a community of them. And it's hard to be Catholic on your own, and the only one in your family. It feels like a pointless battle when you're in isolation.

Watching this friendship and their conversation in action makes me envious. I try to imagine how much more effortless the striving toward holiness would be if I were surrounded by friends as committed to the faith as these two. It’s so hard sometimes being the only in my circle and having to constantly defend defend defend. I mean I know that’s what we’re all called to, but sometimes it would just be nice to be able to rest in that place with someone who just gets it, too, you know, and you can just take refreshment from their faith for the sake of your own. Just for a little bit…before battling onward.

I've never been to a Latin Mass. I've heard about it and have seen them on RU-vid. I attend St. Martin of Tours in Troy, AL, a NO mass. We in the choir have no organist so everything is a cappella. We sing hymns, antiphons and sequences where appropriate. On Saturdays, I used to cantor and I sang only the ordinary and antiphons. We do still exist, I promise ❤

Michael Gormley is so funny and smart and eloquent. He explains the Latin mass and what we lost in such a way that makes we wish we could all wake up and yearn for what once was. I was in second-third grade in the 1960's and remember the Latin mass and wish we had never went to the Novus Ordo mass. A TLM is 60 miles away from where I live. Great discussion, as usual. Thanks, Matt and Gomer.

Thank you for this interesting interview. I especially appreciated the section regarding the liturgy. I teach young Catholic children music through a homeschool co-op. Some of us attend the same parish. The smiles they shot me as they belted out the Pange Lingua in Latin for the Corpus Christi procession is all the confirmation I need that this is my work to do. They learn to love beauty in our music class; Be Thou My Vision, Crown Him with Many Crowns, From the Depths, Stabat Mater. If you nourish them on beauty, they will reject the banal. Those of us in middle age and older must plant trees whose fruit we will most likely never live to eat.

I struggle with the rosary but I kept seeing it pop up in videos of different seemingly holy people saying to pray it. Then finally got the grace to pray it though poorly. Recently been reading the Secret of the Rosary by St Louis De Montfort and that is awesome for encouragement with example stories and instruction. I said the best rosary I ever have this morning after reading St Louis talk about the importance of trying to be attentive while accepting that we will get distracted. Also practical tips like break up the decades over the day to help. Better to say one attentive rosary with the decades spread out over the day than all of the mysteries in one go distracted.

I've struggled my whole life with completing a daily rosary. Jesus sent His Mother to earth to request this prayer to obtain peace, end wars & defeat Satan! Finally, I've received the grace to complete the rosary daily - by getting on my knees FIRST THING in the morning. I only wish I began this discipline earlier in life. It is such a grace. Do give it a try. May Our Lord & Our Lady dispense many graces upon you. 🙏

I love what Gormley has to say about the liturgy. I was in a protestant church in which everything was about having a service that spoke to the individual, in the most up-to-date way. There were those fights over music and over, having any kind of order of service. I know attend a high Anglican Church, where we follow the liturgy. Somehow they had solved the music problem by incorporating chant, hymns, and praise songs, but with the musicians behind the altar, and not front and center. In not catering to me, the liturgy reminds me of things that I would never have thought of, and brings me into the whole communion of saints.
@AnglicanorumCoetibusSociety

Mr Gormley refers to the sources of the Anglican ordinariate liturgy at 2:16:22 (listing them as Sarum, the Latin mass of the Roman Rite, the Novus Ordo Lectionary, and the BCP), but gets the order of the sources somewhat mixed up. The ratio of the Holy See's Anglicanae Traditiones Commission set out "A hierarchy within the sources" "from which the liturgical texts were drawn", "as are representative of the historic Anglican Books of Common Prayer (in the first place) and the Anglican Missals (in the second place)." This hierarchy of sources was broken down as: 1) The Book of Divine Worship ("Being Elements of the Book of Common Prayer revised and Adapted... for use by... Catholics Coming from the Anglican Tradition"), "Given its use as an approved Catholic liturgical text" for the parishes of the Anglican Use Pastoral Provision; 2) The Book of Common Prayer (using seven classic BCPs from England, the US, Scotland, South Africa, and Canada as representative of the main Anglican tradition); 3) The English Missal and the Anglican Missal; And other sources that had pride of place also included Sarum, the Anglican Use Gradual, and a variety of Anglican musical sources. Only if all those sources failed to provide requisite material was recourse then made to Common Worship or the Roman Missal, although the Lectionary chosen was the Novus Ordo's but using the RSV:2CE, with Psalm texts from the Coverdale Psalter. Thanks for talking about the beauty of the ordinariate! Anglicanorum Coetibus and the ordinariates it gave birth to are truly a gift from God.

How can a man say they are head of the household and yet mutually submissive? That seems a contradiction in terms. I feel sometimes like I belong to two different religions at the same time depending on which podcast/online Priest/online Theologian I listen to.
@bumponalog5001
@bumponalog5001 11 месяцев назад
It is a contraindication. Nowhere in the Bible is mutual submission taught. There's literally hundreds of verses that speak to men leading, and none about women leading. It's a modern wishy washy idea meant to try and not offend women and treats them like children. Tell the truth, people can handle it.
@pizzadohpaz
@pizzadohpaz 6 месяцев назад
The way I see it, the husband and wife work in mutual submission to God's mission for them, not to each other. The man remains head of the mission, but at the same time, he must submit himself to the mission (which is the good of the wife/family). So in a way he is submitting himself to the wife, but to the good of the wife rather than the will of the wife. Whereas the wife submits to the will of the husband because he is the head of the mission. It makes sense to me, but I haven't been able to talk it out with anyone yet, so you'll have to let me know if something sounds off

I used to take teen peer presenters in to public schools and talk about sexual sobriety subjects (anything we could get away with in a public schools) I noticed a lack of engagement and overall disinterest starting about 2013...well maybe about the time that young people really started immersing themselves in that other social environment--the online world, with all it's absorbing, hypnotic brokenness.

3:03:27 The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston had a sacred music summer festival in June at HCU where 200 singers (including me!) plus a full orchestra performed Requiem for The Living by Dan Forrest. It was first annual one, and I hope to be in next summer too, and bring a few others from my parish. I’m all for bringing back chant!

How much influence are the protestant mega church formats having on our Liturgy? What I mean is, do people think that they have to pattern their Mass after that in order to compete to keep people from leaving to go be entertained at those churches.

My pastor is a friend and he asked me and one other man to bring TMIY to our parish. We set it up and ran it for a year. The program content was awesome. But the participants were put off by the "passing of the basket" within the last couple of vids. And no one wanted to renew for the next season. I found it heart breaking.

My priest has been at my NO parish for 2 years and it was an irreverent boomer mass before he was there (and I was there). He just started incorporating Latin and Ad Orientum and I think a few people left, but the vast majority have stayed.

I liked the circumspection about Taylor Marshall. I think there is a place for different approaches within our Catholic faith. We are a big family. It is great that we can have different personalities like Matt and Taylor all within the Church, but all wanting the best for all of us, all believing the key tenets of our Faith, and wanting to guide us in these confusing secular times. There is space for both approaches. It is why Ive been turned off by the snarkiness from Michael (at R&T) about Marshall. Find the common ground and be charitable, because we need to stick together.

At about 50:00 when y’all discuss your daily habits with the word my ears perked up to such wonderful insights. Similarly I try to see the word as I read it with fresh eyes and ears by imagining myself in the crowd at the time the events occurred or in the room or at the table as they were written. What glory to have first penned the words?! Or perhaps when Jesus speaks to consider his eyes looking through the page and time at you right in that very moment. You may be a little surprised to suddenly realize that to be precisely the case.

When it comes to the topic of exercise, Brazilian Jiu jitsu is in my opinion the greatest form of exercise. Great for fitness of the mind, and body, and for self defense in case you get mugged. Been practicing for about 2 years now, and I feel confident I could defend myself or my family in hand to hand combat.

Hey Matt + Michael, really great listening to both of you. A good mix of catholic topics thrown up during this short time ;-) When the topic of husbands and wives came up, was really hoping Fr. Ripperger would be mentioned. He's delved into this topic quite a bit and succinctly. Matt if you can have a session devoted to this topic alone it would help a lot. How does a wife submit to her husband and how does a husband love him wife, and in the scenario when the wife does accept his authority then all is well, but how does he exercise his authority and when does he pursue a course of action when his spouse does not agree with him. A lot of nuances here. So pls do consider taking this on in a full video. i'm from India and i love you channel by the way, keep up the good work. God bless your ministry. Watched this over 4 days while working (being a graphic designer helps)!

Matt, the Bible in a year with Mike Schmitz is fantastic. If you’re struggling with making yourself reading it, upload their new app. They’ve got the scripture text with him reading it and the Bible uploaded to the new site. I’ve listened to it for the last few years, and it’s fantastic! He truly brings the Bible to life in it.

Have to comment- we must be tuned into the same spiritual wavelength because ALL of the topics discussed are things I’ve been thinking about lately. Lack of discernment/charity before speaking in our digitalized world, the humility of “beginning where you are” in exercise and how our bodies follow our internal state (@JPII), how most average Joe Catholics 500 yrs ago were so disconnected from the politics of the Church, how young Catholics crave that community that sits down with cigars & a drink “after the conference speech”….is that not the good life, indeed. I laughed the whole way through. Truly a balm for the soul. God bless you for this gift of a podcast!

My husband's family is protestant. I went to a service with them after Mass. Half of the non-denomenational church (mega church) were former Catholics and the other half Lutherans. I went to their information meeting and learned that they have exploded from one to 25 mega churches in 15 years all within the same state. They hyper focus on Jesus, being relatable, amazing praise and worship music, community, and rooted in the Bible. Makes me sad to hear so very many Catholics tell me that just don't relate to the cold Catholic church. I have no answers. I don't think any one thing will magically set aflame our church again. I will say I was visiting a church in a Texas for a couple months. It was definitely on the level of a mega church and it was standing room only. It was a Lifeteen Mass. Praying to God for discernment and Mama Mary for guidance.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about TLM being this perfect solution they seem to think it would be... I think it would drive a lot of people into confusion honestly. It's probably great for deeply formed Catholics, but the average Joe isn't going to get it the same way
