Paul Newman called my house & left a message on my answering machine while making this. I was 12 and wanted to interview him about his charity work w/ sick kids for school. That man is a legend.

Another unique take...this time on a film that has aged remarkably well (my most recent watch was 2 months ago). It’s worth mentioning that the themes you mentioned are seamlessly woven together by Thomas Newman’s stunning musical score. Keep up the great work.

Road to Perdition is a feat for the eyes and ears ! To me it´s still is one of the best looking movies ever. And Thomas Newman´s soundtrack is one of my favourites as well. Just an all around great movie going expereince.

I grew up watching this movie, and as you said, the twelwe year old me was only concerned with the outstanding Thomas Newman score, the beautyfull cinematography and the badass time period. Catholicism was never really important to me until a string of wakes for tragic deaths made me apreciate religion's role in mourning

Another example of visual storytelling (I'll leave a detailed analysis of the reflections to another post): Connor's death in the bathtub is a visual reference to David's "The Death of Marat" painting, which was also about the cathartic murder of a man who had set off an unnecessary series of murders during the French Revolution.

I love the dichotomy between media that uses Catholicism and media that is entwined with Catholicism. The latter just rings so true to my Catholic upbringing, and even as I get farther and farther away from Catholicism in my day to day life, I can't deny the weird comfort I get from media like that

I've only watched this movie once, when I was 14-15 years old. I may have to rewatch it because all of this went over my head the first time.

Since you brought up Catholicism, I got an ad from Catholic Talk Show. On second thought, have you seen the movie Lone Wolf and Cub? The graphic novel that the movie based on took some inspiration from Lone Wolf and Cub manga series.

I think it would have been interesting to compare and contrast the Catholicism of road to tradition with one of its inspirations, the comic Lone Wolf and Cub.

I have much enjoyed this analysis and have given it several viewings. One parallel not mentioned however is that Sullivan and Mcguire are essentially the same thing in their professions... HIT MEN... vengance and the devil are one in the same yet ironically in the Diner scene... one poses as a Photographer and the other a Salesman... yet both recognize each other beyond the facade. The Photographers aim in this scene is to kill the Salesman but he fails. In the end the Photographer does kill the Salesman but not before the Salesman kills the Photographer... ONE IN THE SAME... the Son Michael is ultimately saved... thus breaking the cycle of blood and vengance. This can be mirrored in the final lines of dialogue in the film: when people ask me if Michael Sullivan was a good man or if there was no good in him at all, I always give the same answer: He was my Father.

7:40 I speak from personal experience when I say that this mindset is destructive. It feels like a good justification in the moment of committing a sin, but after it’s done, the guilt really hits you, especially when you admit to committing the sin for that reason in confession.

Wondering if you've ever seen The Way with Martin Sheen and Emilio Esteves? Im a former Catholic but really loved its use of Catholic imagery and faith as a backdrop edit: Also anyone who wants a fun movie about Martin Sheen grieving his dead son by hiking across Spain and befriending other pilgrims. Also an extra layer of interesting: Martin Sheen's son Emilio Estevez plays his dead son haunting Sheen with regrets of the father he was... Also Estevez is the director

Christianity doesn't make any damn sense to me, starting with Original Sin.
@bladesmann7593
@bladesmann7593 5 лет назад
Think of it like this: Original Sin isn't a stain on you as an individual, it's a philosophical view of Humanity as a whole, which each of us is a part of. A vicious cycle of violence and lies. Because we are all human, we are all born into the same imperfect species and the same Cycles of sin. The only way to escape original sin is to break that cycle. To remove yourself from the mistakes of your ancestors. That is what baptism is. It's your promise to God that you will live a better life. For parents baptizing their baby, it is their promise to God that they will raise you to be better than the people who came before. Upon Our baptism we take on full responsibility for all of our mistakes. That's what separates original sin from personal sin. Rectifying personal sin is the purpose of confession and the subsequent acts of atonement to right the wrongs that you've done. This is to make you more mindful of yourself and the people around you. It's very complicated but then again, humans are complicated. Thank you for reading and I hope you learned a little something.

@@bladesmann7593 but if original sin isn't "a stain on an individual" then why would you as an individual NEED Jesus to have "died for your sins?"
