Think of it like this: Original Sin isn't a stain on you as an individual, it's a philosophical view of Humanity as a whole, which each of us is a part of. A vicious cycle of violence and lies. Because we are all human, we are all born into the same imperfect species and the same Cycles of sin. The only way to escape original sin is to break that cycle. To remove yourself from the mistakes of your ancestors. That is what baptism is. It's your promise to God that you will live a better life. For parents baptizing their baby, it is their promise to God that they will raise you to be better than the people who came before. Upon Our baptism we take on full responsibility for all of our mistakes. That's what separates original sin from personal sin. Rectifying personal sin is the purpose of confession and the subsequent acts of atonement to right the wrongs that you've done. This is to make you more mindful of yourself and the people around you.
