Thank you. I personally consider Road to Perdition to be a very beautiful and underrated masterpiece. Right from the start, i thought it was a crime drama on the same level as The Untouchables, The Godfather, and Goodfellas

A personal story: 6 month ago, my father passed away. At the funeral ceremony in the church, my speech cited the very same final words told by the son. Glad to see you love this film as much as I. Cheers.

As much as I adore the Godfather (and it's sequels plural) I place Road To Perdition on top. It's up there next to Boardwalk Empire for best Gangster film.

Brendon, I understand that you don't know me from Adam, but I want to tell you something. This is, bar none, one of the most well-written breakdowns of any film I have ever viewed on RU-vid. Clear, concise, and incredibly well thought out. I think your interpretation is spot-on. If you knew me, this would mean something to you. As is, please take this as you will. All the best to you in the future, keep it up! E

Connor's distance from the family is established in his first scene. When Michael Jr. and Peter play dice with John, they're happy and John is happy, in return. When Michael Jr. goes to John's study to pick up the money he won from the game, we encounter Connor, who tries to act friendly towards Michael Jr., but Michael Jr. isn't comfortable talking to him at all. When Michael Jr. tries to get the money he won, Connor stops him and tells him he'll get it later. He also tells Michael Jr. to call him "Uncle Connor", in a pathetic attempt to integrate himself into the Sullivan family. While Michael Jr. calls him that, he's clearly feeling awkward about it and isn't saying it freely, unlike his and Peter's freely given love towards John Rooney. Later on, when Michael Sr. and John Rooney are playing the piano, Connor initially takes delight in seeing Michael play a wrong note, but becomes angry when John doesn't make a fuss about it and allows him to continue playing with him. This establishes his jealousy of Michael and John's close relationship, something he wishes to have with his own father, John, but never achieves. In the end, while John is willing to protect Connor, cause he's his biological son, it's clear that his love for Connor doesn't go further than that. John frequently distances himself from Connor and isn't nearly as open towards him as he is towards Michael.

Hat's off to you again, good sir! Your talent for analysis and thought provoking insight astounds me. I haven't seen this film since its release, but am eager to do so again after this video. There's one scene which has always stayed with me, where Paul Newman's character insists that his son (Daniel Craig) show genuine shame and contrition in front of the others at the table: SLAM "You would like to apologize?.... Try again." The whole film demonstrates the highest caliber of acting talent. Thank you for bringing this film back to my attention!

Your review of this movie actually brought me to tears. I love your attitude towards fatherhood. You are a beautiful man who puts to shame all of the SJW bs that is a part of our present culture. I love this movie.

I like that you pointed out the flaws in John Rooney’s parenting. He may have shown external care for both Michael and Connor, but he didn't put much effort beyond that. He showed no hesitation in having Michael killed to protect Connor, yet, despite caring for Connor, he had a distant relationship with him.

Great review of, "The Road to Perdition" (2002). It started as a great graphic novel written by Max Allan Collins, illustrated by Richard Piers Rayner. It was then adapted into a great movie, with Sam Mendes directing off a script written by David Self, starring Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jude Law, Daniel Craig, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and young actors Tyler Hoehclin and Liam Aiken. But for me the icing on the cake was the beautiful, contemplative score written by Thomas Newman. You earned a subscription this day. :)

Fun fact: Disney owns this movie internationally now sadly. So apologies to those outside of North America. Other than that, brilliant movie.

You speak the truth, our first born's definitely accrete a great deal of our very essence. It can certainly cause difficulty in the relationship, often it's traits we wish they wouldn't adopt!😅 Like stubbornness..that'll test a father's metal 😄

The most poieant moments for me were when Tom Hanks been shot by hitman. His Son comes in with his father's gun about to kill the hit man. But he couldn't do it. It shows his nature was not following in his father's footsteps. Which Mike Sullivan has dreading entire time.

Everyone seem focused upon Tom Hanks and his Son in Road to Perdition. But there also Paul Newman with his adult son. He chooses Hanks over his own Son of which jealous primary reason he kills other mobster.

I might have to give this movie a second chance. Haven't seen it since it came out. I genuinely appreciate your optimistic view of things and that's what it would take to make me sit through this again. Sam Mendes has his good movies, but I really hated American Beauty. Thanks for giving detailed attention to older movies while most others just want to talk about Star Wars. . .again. Sick of that!
@donchristianmarkham7312

Agreed about American Beauty -- I jumped on the bandwagon when it first came out, but the more I thought about it, the more it disgusted me. Gorgeous film, detestable manipulative nihilistic story. Even more creepy today given Kevin Spacey's outted predatory nature.... but Road to Perdition is a story justified to have Sam Mendes's talents applied to it.

Funny, I usually love LFM's views. However, I didn't find this movie all that great-good. Newman was okay, considering how ill and old he was. Hanks, was also pretty good. It just didn't move well, uneven, and I felt it was all just a bit predictable.

Can't help it with the way movies are nowadays sorry. Tom Hank's character is definitely John Wick's great grandfather. His son Michael or even Michael's son at some point moves to Russia and eventually John Wick is born to seek revenge!! #DontFKWithMyDog
