Ok everyone take your seats, class has started. In the Gospel of Luke, the angel Gabriel greets Mary by saying "Hail, thou art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women," Luke 1:28 The next part of the Hail Mary appears later on in Luke's Gospel, when Mary's cousin Elizabeth greets her by saying "Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb," Luke 1:42 The phrase "pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death" demonstrates that Catholics view Mary not as a goddess to be worshipped, but as a helpful ally in the life-long struggle against sin and temptation. In all of the Marian prayers offered by Catholics, there is not a single claim of Mary's divinity. Likewise, the Hail Mary is not a prayer of worship, but a prayer request. We worship or idolize no one except God.

Thank you Father Cole for this enlightening presentation into the various beliefs surrounding eschatology, and specifically the Rapture. What I find particularly disturbing about the premillennial view of the End Times is that it has engendered people to support foreign policies which they believe will expedite the process. It has encouraged people to spend their time looking for signs and wonders that point to Jesus' imminent return, instead of doing what they should be doing, which is living out the truth of the Gospel. While all this talk about the apocalypse is interesting, people should be more concerned with living lives that reflect holiness, rather than fixating on how an age of holiness will be ushered in through some series of cataclysmic events.

As a pastor and biblical scholar I fight this crowd regularly, trying to draw their attention to the large discrepancies between their doctrines (in particular Darbyism) and the Scriptures. I have appreciated the mostly biblical doctrines of the Catholic Church on these matters, and do realize that they are also informed by extra-biblical traditions. Knowing this sourcing I do not say anything against them. And besides, Protestantism is the biggest monster in the room at this point! Very nicely and precisely explained. One thing not elaborated on in your video is that the teaching of the Rapture was very much a 19th Century invention, pushed even further by the onset and aftermath of the American Civil War. Splinter groups and separatist groups like that founded by the Millerites, Charles Taze Russell and others emphasized the Rapture and The Book of Revelation heavily if not almost exclusively. Thanks for having posted this and all your discussions. Very helpful and informative. Much appreciated!

Consider Saint Teresa of Avila's distinction between Union & Rapture. I wish that I could explain, with God's help, the difference between union and rapture, or elevation, or flight of the spirit or transport-for they are all one. I mean that these are all different names for the same thing, which is also called ecstasy. It is much more beneficial than union, its results are much greater, and it has very many other effects as well. Union seems to be the same at the beginning, the middle, and the end, and is altogether inward. But the ends of rapture are of a much higher nature, and their effects are both inward and outward. As the Lord has explained things hitherto, let Him do so now. For if His Majesty had not shown me ways and means of saying something, I certainly should never have found any.

In my all cradle Catholic family, in this predominantly Catholic society, we only heard about Rapture theology when a cousin converted to Baptist, after her bro migrated to the US and became staunched Baptist himself. They kept on attacking us about our faith and telling us that we will not be saved because we did not "accept Jesus as our personal Lord & savior". We were always confused by their words because even if we studied in Catholic schools for years, these are new concepts for us. Anyways, come pandemic, she is extremely anxious about the Rapture because in our family, she is the only one left among those who "accepted Jesus as her personal Lord & savior" and did not receive the "mark of the beast". According to her, her bro with his family will not Rapture because even if they "accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and savior", they received the "mark of the beast". Some of us, her Catholic Church active cousins, who did not receive the "mark of the beast" will not Rapture too, because we did not "accept Jesus as our personal Lord and savior". She is busy preparing for her Rapture, that she became a butt of a joke in the family because after months, she wasn't sucked to heavens yet. During parties, cousins will ask her, "Why are you still here? God did not favor you?" And everybody will laugh at her. Praying this pride she has been keeping for years will wane and she will soon realize and be enraptured by the many gifts the Church and her loving and accepting Catholic family gave to her.

Let me say something that may surprise most Catholics: In my experience as an evangelical pastor, about 2/3 of evangelical clergy DO NOT hold to a pre-tribulation view of the rapture - for all of the reasons Fr Casey gave. It is not really supported in Scripture - in which there is only one coming of Christ. In at least 1700 years of searching the Scriptures, no one saw it there, it was not even a minority viewpoint. Furthermore, the history of the doctrine I was taught is that it began with a "revelation" to a 13 year old Scottish girl in 1830 - not even with someone searching the Scriptures and somehow finding it there after 1800 years..... It is also interesting that the whole premise of the 'Left Behind" series is what? Christians during the tribulation! If the Lord wants to continue evangelizing during the tribulation, why would He remove the church???? FYI, I have not kept me views to myself - I have taught them in my ministry.

@@Call_Upon_YAH First, let me say that I am an evangelical minister - so obviously, I disagree with Catholics on the issue of praying to Mary. That said, your statement is grossly unfair. Before you condemn someone's theology, you should seek to first understand it. 1) The Catholic Church believes that the fellowship of Christians extends past death. They therefore conclude that just as we ask other Christians on earth to pray for us, we can and should ask those who have gone before us to pray for us as well. I do not think this is Biblical, but it is certainly NOT idolatry. One misunderstanding is that we evangelicals tend to equate prayer with worship. They are by no means the same. In some states, when someone sues for damages, they are "praying" for them. Does this mean they are worshiping the judge? Of course not! Prayer simply means to make a request........in the case of Mary and the Saints, they are asking them to pray to the Father, through Christ. Furthermore, Catholics are free, and encouraged to, pray directly to God the Father, through Jesus Christ. 2) Are there some Catholics who worship Saints and Mary in an idolatrous way? Absolutely - and the Catholic Church condemns this practice. So, is this doctrine unsupported by Scripture? Yes. Is it idolatry - not if Catholic doctrine is followed. You are not going to get anywhere by telling people that they are doing things that they actually are not doing. The best way to learn about someone else's theology is to ask them and to read their authoritative sources - then you can dialogue in a much more effective way.

All I know is the General Bodily Resurrection expressed in the Creeds. It's also surprising how some pre-trib and premillenials base it on a fairly recent interpretation. Also, my standard is what the Angels at the Ascension that He will "return as He went" (hence praying eastward towards the Mount of Olives from Jerusalem's perspective, so it's not exactly "secret". Yes, you should always strive for holiness regardless of the nearness or distance of Judgement Day... though it's not great to just _forget_ about it, either. That said, I think a lot of the people who end up _excessively_ focused on the apocalypse end up that way for many of the same reasons that other people get hooked on conspiracy theories, seeing dastardly Jews or Satanists or Freemasons or Catholics (and all their oddly frequent and conspicuous "secret signs") everywhere they look. Some of them are just honest, scared people, earnestly worried for the fates of their wayward (or "wayward") friends and loved ones. They hear "no man knows the day or the hour" and similar warnings and they start to panic: "But what if it's _soon?_ What if it's _tomorrow?!_ Am I ready?! Are _we_ ready?!". Then they're encouraged in their panic by friends and preachers, either because these advisors are just as honest-but-scared as they are or because they're taking advantage of their panic to _sell_ things, like preparation guides or ration kits. Others are very prideful. "No man knows" is taken as a challenge. They've liberally applied their shaky understanding of gematria to every English word they've ever read, they've stretched symbols and similarities to their breaking points, they've unwittingly fabricated new etymologies for half the words in the dictionary, and through it all, they've managed to discern the Day, the Hour, sometimes even the Minute. Or at least they've found a preacher who has. And it's very comforting and reassuring to know exactly just how near The End really is. They're very happy to be among the chosen few who are _smart_ enough or _faithful_ enough to see all the signs for what they _really_ are, and even _more_ happy to _not_ be among the poor, arrogant, sanctimonious heathen _fools_ who just refuse to listen.

It's a very polarizing view among Christians in general, and I think the popularity of the Left Behind books made it even more polarizing. Even in the A/G, I know many who di not agree with the rapture per say. And it's literally because it's not in Scripture. It actually always puzzled me that people who fully believe in the rapture--a theology and word that don't make an appearance in Scripture--and yet subscribe to Sola scriptura, refuse to believe the Eucharist is the real presence of Jesus. That puzzles me.

The Virgin Mary was the first to be raptured. Raised to heaven, body and soul by God. It's called "The Assumption" in Catholic terminology. The first to be favored that way by the Lord. She was indeed, as the angel filled with joy hailed her and proclaimed, "Hail Mary! Full of Grace! The Lord is with you! Blessed art thou amongst women!" The first human to be so favored and raised to heaven by the singular over-abundance of grace from God. Jesus "ascended" into heaven by His own authority because He was God. Mary was "assumed" or raptured into heaven by the power and grace of the Lord.

In my opinion, almost all of the mainstream Christian denominations are described in this prophecy by apostle Peter. 2 Peter 2:1-3 KJVS But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. [2] And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. [3] And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. Theologians and Bible experts, know their doctrinal positions, but they do not know scripture like the back of their hand. And if they do see a scripture that is contrary to their positions, ignore it, serving their institutions rather than serving God. That may or may not be true with this young man. But, if he is interested in the truth, then he should seek, Luke 11:9-13, the baptism of the Holy Ghost. And allow the unction of the Holy Ghost to teach him. 1 John 2:20,27 KJVS But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. [27] But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Denomination apart, I just have a hard time accepting the idea of amillenialism, if it implies that the current world is a world where "Satan is bound". To me, the whole of the human history, up to this point and probably the one that will be written in the age to come, implies that Satan is very free to roam the earth and do as he pleases, in the sense that he can act on what he has been given right to, which of course is not the Church and its members. I just cannot believe that the world we live in is the "reign" of the Church. The Church exists, but it is certainly not reigning on the earth.

What I dislike most about Protestantism is their abandonment of the necessity of good works for salvation. When the disciples asked Jesus how to obtain eternal life, he replied “love God and love your neighbor”. The two were equal. When asked how to do this, Jesus answered, feed the hungry, care for the sick, and give shelter to the stranger. He meant this.

That makes sense. A lot of it is tied up in ideas of "American Exceptionalism". Many of the eschatological denominations that formed in the mid 1800s thought that the US would be the center of the second coming, and that it is the new chosen nation. I think they missed the point that the faith is supposed to be a transnational connection for all the world. .

I think the sequence of events is pretty straight forward as its written. Tribulation> 2nd coming,>The dead in Christ will rise (1st judgement)>1k year reign >Final Battle>2nd Judgement (for those not risen the first time)> Earth destroyed and rebuilt. The version where the church is called up prior to the tribulation in my opinion seems to be more prevalent in the profit driven churches. Most pastors I have heard speak do teach post tribulation.

I'm an Amillennialist. It's always been a more Reformed view of end times with its emphasis on the unity of all God's people -- Jew and Gentile -- throughout history and the adoption of gentiles into the family of Israel and what is the church universal (small c catholic) today. Dispensational Christianity focuses on the unique nature of the Church and national Israel -- and especially promises made to Abraham concerning the land which is why they emphasis a literal millennial kingdom. I don't agree with that focus but I understand it -- since most of my Christian friends hold to that view.

There are exceptions to almost all generalizations but I’ll venture a couple: 1: Most people believe whatever they were first taught about this or any other subject. 2: Most people who profess faith in Jesus assume that anything other than what they were first taught about this subject is both a) not scriptural and b) doesn’t make sense. The word, “rapture”, isn’t in the Douay-Rheims Bible translation from which scripture passages were quoted when my dad was a boy in the first two decades of the twentieth century. If I understand this correctly, however, the Latin equivalent of the word does occur in the Latin Vulgate translation of I Thessalonians 4:17 from which the Douay-Rheims was translated. In the later translation, it is rendered “caught up”. There are several significant differences in the ways Bible prophecies have been interpreted over the last several hundred years. Two of those differences pertain to 1) whether the church will be “caught up” before or after the millennium and 2) whether the church will be “caught up” before or after “the” tribulation. Post-millennialism WAS the most popular view in the United States from sometime in the eighteenth and during the entire nineteenth century. It no longer is but I’ve studied that interpretation enough to think it is being misrepresented in this video. The primary difference among pre-millennialists pertains to the question of whether there will be a “tribulation” that will occur after the church is “caught up”. Even among pre-millennialists who teach that the tribulation will end by the church being caught up, however, there is disagreement about whether to take the words of Jesus literally: “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again, and I will take you to myself; that where I am, there you also will be. (John 14:3 Douay-Rheims translation) People who prefer to believe there will be a tribulation after the church is caught up are more inclined to teach that Jesus will come to be with us where we are. Each of these doctrines is defended by people who are reading the Bible “literally”. It is a matter of WHICH passages to interpret literally. These interpretations “make sense” to the people to favor a literal reading of the Bible passages on which their preferred doctrine is based.

I was taught in Catechism the post-millennialist view, however, reading Scripture led me to a different conclusion. The Jewish Rulers at the time had a dogmatic interpretation of the Messiah’s appearance, and though they knew the Scripture well, missed it. Anna and Simeon, however, weren’t surprised at all. I trust that whatever happens is in God’s very capable hands. He doesn’t need me to tell Him how it should be done.

It seems a little weird to me that this view that is pretty directly contradicted by the Gospels is preferred by people who insist that the world was literally created in seven 24-hour days and that a literal serpent sold a naked couple on eating a specific fruit in a garden prepared by God. I listened to "Catholic Answers" yesterday regarding the rapture. Basically, he says that the Catholic version of the rapture is exactly opposite that of the Protestants. It is clearly stated in Matthew 13:36-43 "The Explanation of the Parable of the Weeds. 36 Then, dismissing the crowds,[a] he went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” 37 [b]He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, 38 the field is the world,[c] the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age,[d] and the harvesters are angels. 40 Just as weeds are collected and burned [up] with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom[e] all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. 42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. 43 [f]Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear." The New American Bible, St. Joseph Edition. I'd love to hear an explanation of The Glory Be - "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen." This seems to imply there will be no end to the world. Does it mean that Earth will be where the billions of good faithful will be?

My personal experience is that when I truly engage in the Rosary my life takes on a humble unassuming walk with God that is the most natural I have ever felt. I am not sure of the status of Limbo. Saint Pope Benedict XVI seemed to think Limbo was more of a theological speculation. But perhaps some hidden nuances of the virtues of the Holy Spirit remain to be discovered when the Lord is ready to allow us to understand. I suspect the states of Union and Rapture are related to Limbo. The Holy Spirit brings to mind things I would not have thought of otherwise. And I believe this weapon of spiritual warfare is one of the most effective ways to combat the demonic forces of the adversary all the while leaving the infected hosts unharmed. I am speaking of the The Rosary when I speak of this weapon of spiritual warfare.
