Catwoman's Most Hated Costume?

Catwoman has gone through many costumes during his time as one of Batman's premier female rogues in his villain gallery. During the silver age a few variations were tried on her classic purple look. Following the cancellation of the Batman 66 tv series an entirely new look was tried. Designed by Frank Robbins, Selina Kyle now sported a more pirate themed look inspired by a hero from days long past...The Black Cat. Find out all about this costume and the reaction to it here on Casually Comics!

The first time I saw this Catwoman costume was in Batman The Brave and the Bold and it’s introduction in the series was funny, because Catwoman literally says something along the lines of “ I got a new costume just to impress Batman! Why are you here Plastic man!” And then she starts angrily wiping a Plastic man that was dressed as Batman.

Hey Sasha, if you like weird Golden Age comics, I high recommend Fantomah. She's been cited as the first female superhero to appear in comics and was created by Fletcher Hanks, which means her stories tend to be bizarre and dark. She's definitely a character who, in my opinion, deserves to make a comeback.

As much as I like Sasha's silver age coverage I too would love more golden age coverage. As for Fantomah, I'm glad she gets that credit, but when reading her stuff I don't think I would call her a superhero. I love her though

Not gonna lie, I actually dig the look for it's era. The big mask and cat eyes are pretty freaky, and make her look like an actual villain... or B'Wanna Beast. I get the hate though, it's drastic as all hell, and the body suits are iconic, but don't know... I think it's neat. I'm so with you there with the social media barometer of letter columns! I remember in the early 90s how worried fans were for Illyana when she was sick with the Legacy Virus and over multiple issues so many people threatened to quit reading X-Men if she died. I'd just gotten into reading comics at the time and had jumped into the Legacy Virus story mid-arc so I had no idea what was going on, but I did understand how loved she was by the fandom from those letters. I never would've gotten that without the letter columns and future generations will miss that too if the columns are left out of reprints.

I was SO happy when I found out about this costume. I grew up watching reruns of the 60s show, and I had a few comics with her in them from the 80s... LOL Yeah, I had that Catwoman figure. The thing I hated the most was the vinyl "gloves" (I hated them on Batman and Robin, too, truth be told). Yeah, Mego was (and is again) a mixed bag. Up side - they had the license to both DC and Marvel and were willing to do as many characters as they could. Down side - they tended to cheap out, reuse costumes (see Gorn/Klingon/Planet of the Apes all sharing the same top). So, really, we're kind of lucky Catwoman turned out as well as she did.

It could be a totally new character. It wasn't a slow evolution from any of her previous or well known outfits. Or her usual design sense of some skin tight cat suit thing, or the purple dress to purple catsuit thing.

2:32 Y'know, this raises the thorny question of what to name your new business when starting up in Gotham. You're pretty much asking for it if you choose anything that's going to attract the attention of one of the town's super-loons, so nothing connected with cats, bats, hats, birds, plants, alligators, riddles, puzzles or games, jokes, pranks, or comedy, puppets, fire, ice, the number two, anything scary, Mexican wrestlers, psychiatry, pretty much any holiday, calendars, clocks, and the list goes on. Office supply stores get raided by the Eraser and restaurants are plagued by the Condiment King. Even an accounting firm would probably have some nitwit show up eventually. "Beware Gotham, for I am - the Actuary! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!" And then he gets in a brawl with the Crimson Auditor ("You're in the red now, Batman!") over who's going to rob the place and they wind up wrecking reception. Maybe you lean into the problem and make it work for you instead? "Deathtraps, Incorporated" will at least get you some business before the inevitable catastrophe. It's got a nice ring to it, anyway.

I kinda like the look of it and I could see a IRL costume of it looking nice, but it's not a favorite Catwoman look to me. I get why it's unpopular: the mask just didn't look cat like enough. It looks more demon than feline with the hellish red with yellow eyes. If the mask were more feline the look would work cause the outfit is nice albeit a bit pirate-like. I like it much more on the golden age character whose outfit you showed that rocked the look better. Imagine this look with green eyes and a black (and/or dark purple if you want to incorporate the colors Selina favors) cat-shaped mask like her iconic one.

There were discussions about Matt and his costume and the like. But I haven't come across any other collections with letters in them. Which is sad because I would have really liked to know people's thoughts about certain issues and the shifting characterization (or costume like the armored one in the 90s) instead of just hearing that people did or did not like it.

Yeah, the original Black Cat was pretty cool. The idea behind her was that she was a professional stunt woman who learned all her skills from actors, stuntmen, and other talented professional within the movie industry. It's actually a really cool way to give your hero a bunch of skills in an unconventional way. She had a peppy personality and seemed to enjoy adventure. The down side to her comics is that she lacks motivation to crime fight. She just... kinda does. Occasionally it's linked to her day job, some trouble at the studio that she has to solve, but more than not it's just some random crime she suddenly decides to stop because "why not". The character went to War at one point, and also transitioned into Western Comics with little to no explanation (it's believed her western stories were films she was in). Black Cat also did something extremely cool in that in some pages it actually taught REAL judo moves for self-defense. It's because of this that the comics code wanted to put an end to the series, but in all honestly the book was losing steam by then. Having a character with no motivation kinda kills any drama or opportunities for stories.

Lettercolumns, Bullpen Bulletins, Publishorials, and vintage movie, toy, and comics merchandise ads are why I had a number of Bronze Age runs - reading copies, not "investment grade" copies - custom bound into hardback over the years. Action figures were invented by Kenner for Star Wars, because dolls would have required toy ships and play sets that would have been too big, and expensive. Although there were doll size characters as well, but they didn’t sell as well.) Anyway, he also had the Catwoman Mego doll, and I found it very confusing. With Cat Woman's costumes, being a child of the 70's we were exposed to all of them and I just chalked it up to her being "fickle" and just wanting variety in her wardrobe. There is a fine line to walk when writing a story, who to appeal to?...the whimsy or the hard boiled? PEACE dear Sister, and God bless. Oh, and since you stopped sleeping in your specs I haven't complimented you on any of those pairs, always Super Model Sharp Woman!!!!

Hey, Sasha. I have heard Black Cat is the first superheroine but also heard the same about Phantom Lady. And I have read different dates. Ever consider a video on this topic?

My goodness your love for the letters column is genuinely underestimated and unappreciated if it's impossible in your personal community that you created in your free channel or that built up over time I mean specifically now I have to admit when first looking at this outfit it is it is genuinely hard to take moment to really like it I mean it's definitely visually stunning regardless stunning for the good or stunning for the bad it's hard to be sure sometimes when first looking at something so shocking and eye catching that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing or a good thing shocking or the way that I'm putting it does not necessarily give it justice but I have to admit this 70's version of her outfit is bizarrely charming I think both of them were actually pretty interesting when I first saw it I many years ago in the mid 2000s looking at history points of her outfits of Catwoman I won't deny it I thought he was very ugly but after a while I thought it was very interesting and nice interesting contrast in a different sense like really going bold but honestly I thought it was ugly even I dare say catastrophe of a pun but I didn't think it was not interesting anyways when I first saw it but now the more I get older and the more I appreciate vintage or older fashions in different contrasts and how they are used especially for purely different ways to change up the outfit of Catwoman but no matter how weird unless they're really bad outfit that really just has all around bad taste even something shockingly different from all the other outfits and I don't think I'll fit is that ugly if I had to think of it as ugly I actually think it's actually very I'm trying to sound like I don't hate it I do find it tacky at times even a real ice were but when I really embrace for what it can be and what offers with the camping ridiculousness of the point of being a real catty bug get a bug eyes of the mask bag of ugly but only when the comics really make it harder for it to be like both especially if I don't know some of the crazy expressions are so out there that makes it hard to like or maybe a bad story but I overall actually really like and I find it charming I actually wouldn't mind drawing this and this is actually a really bold statement to go all that way with her especially when women looking extra pretty I mean any era of comics but especially a timer you probably could get away with some interesting thought provoking looks this is the era for it especially in the 70s and they really nailed it hard for unique and different well obviously there is a strong reference to the black cat but I mean for Selena AK Catwoman to truly own it as her own and I have to really think they both honored the black cat in the original and some honored weird way but on the other ways I think Catwoman actually really owned it in her own way made her own is what I mean it actually takes time to reinvent an outfit especially for a villain but still holding unique coin of peculiarity of a beautifully bold outfit whether you find it ugly or beautiful or just down right fascinating in a weird way you're not sure how you feel about it you want to hate it but apart if you likes to hate it and a part of you actually like to see how unique it is I'm just how out there it is and appreciate that alone love it or hated that outfit is truly unique that is probably the truest statement you could possibly have and honestly I think it's easier to hate something than give something a chance especially in the more controversial era of opinions and believe me when looking at those dolls she looks better on paper she looks better on a magazine she looks better on TV even if give her 10 pounds or meet her taller but those dolls and that's coming from someone who makes doll clothing for hobby and down ouch my personal love prevention stuff is hurting especially for vintage dolls under the right circumstances I want to personally customize an outfit just for this Catwoman especially the injustice those outfits on those dolls do and I really don't like dissing sad attempts on dolls clothes Dad saying something those outfits on those dolls are the real stinker and I do feel bad for saying that not for the outfit in the comic it's his own amazing unique awkwardness both good or bad tasteful or not I am glad to bring blabbering about that darn outfits but to be fair it's one of those ones that give you mileage I really don't know what to think of it I also have to say real quick the green outfit was not actually a bad rendition of it but I think turning it purple brown albeit possibly not the best choice even yellow maybe not yellow heck even turning into a cream white or the street of white would have been unusual twist maybe even made her look nice sweet and innocent I think I would have actually made a very unusual twist of don't judge a book by its character because you might think oh sweet looking kitty cat of the lady then turns around and she's actually a villain would have been answering very interesting thing the other outfit regardless of that weird lizard like pattern though I have to admit that was very unique and interesting aesthetic to it though the insistent level of her wanting to marry Batman it's barely bonkers and that's coming from a girl who loves watching Superman girlfriend comics videos testing something to a certain level but you're not going to be seeing Louis going into the crazy house with her extreme crazy antics to get superman to marry her I think that last comment was a bit harsh on both Louis and Catwoman but to be fair as much as I think the cat puns are really silly and kind of stupid I rather her go for her with the cat pans then constantly go to the moronic levels of trying to get Batman's marry her it's one thing to play on jealousy it's another to make her kind of lose it over something really dumb I mean having your heart's desire get the better of you is not necessarily good help or healthy it's important to follow them but the person you really like is not going to reciprocate your feelings in any way or other minor or even if they did the way that you're acting is making them run away is possible considering that she's in love with the dark Knight that's saying something he knows he's not insane himself by the way that she's acting even if he liked her back is a perfectly level understandably hard nope and yes I just called Batman crazy pretty bonkers but she's taking it to the next level with her jealousy here everyone's crazy If my grandma looks bad I'm sorry if my writing looks bad altogether my typing just spell check is both making things hard for me to write this and I am just terrible at remembering punctuations

An old comic without its letters column is like original Beavis & Butthead without the music videos. You're missing a lot. There were some people who got letters in comics repeatedly, til they were like familiar faces, and you half-expected to see them every time you got to the letters page (Uncle Elvis). And one of my proudest moments was getting a letter printed in Sensational She-Hulk (#14 I think). I felt like I had suddenly become a part of comics history. If I still had that issue, it would probably be in a frame on my wall (out of direct sunlight tho), and I would seriously consider paying you to make a video about the issue and reading my letter. That would be cool, uh-huh-huh (callback). But alas, my Golden Age has also passed, and that ship -- nay, that CATamaran has sailed.

If you make the costume retrospective a full on series with multiple superhero/ villain outfits. I heavily recommend doing one on Superman in the golden age(especially with the concept art behind it, the history behind it is really interesting). if not maybe Batman with how the batsuit evolved dirung the duration on the golden age?

Black Cat herself deserves a solo feature - when you look into her, she is a character who is Mrs. Incredible levels of flexibility. Don't like war- time adventure? Let's do mystery! Not into that? Crime fighting! Is crime fighting blasé? How about westerns!!?! She deserves a deep dive if only to appreciate how hard her publishers tried to keep a good heroine going!

She had a pretty good run for a Golden Age character from a publisher that didn't go on to be one of the Big Two. A lot of the stories are decent reads for their era - and like you said, plenty of variety.

My second ever Batman comic was 'Batman' #259 which featured Selina in this costume. It also had a "history of Catwoman costumes" one page feature in it. (100 pages for $0.50 - there was filler). So I saw the green scales costume there. And it said, point blank, that the green costume was based on the live action TV show costume. Which I thought was stupid. Okay, I was only six, but I thought her then current costume, being black and shiny, looked more like the Catwoman I knew from TV. Even now, when I look at the green costume, I can see how they were drawing Julie Newmar's costume, but the coloring was so far off that it just didn't work. What made that costume work for Catwoman was Julie Newmar's presence, grace, sensuality, and humour. (It was just kind of there on Lee Meriwether. It might have worked on Eartha Kitt if Kitt had a]been allowed to vamp and b] been given better scripts.) I never realized the black & blue costume was from the -er- Batman and Robbins era. But borrowing from Linda (Black Cat) Turner's closet is an excellent choice. I've read a few stories of that Black Cat, and she was pretty sexy for a 1940s heroine. I'm surpised that my dad (who had bought #259 for me/us) didn't mention the resemblence. I do remember Dad talking about the Black Cat; he was of the opinion that DC had been ripping off the Black Cat when they created the Black Canary. The only thing on this Catwoman costume that didn't really work were the cats-eye lenses. If they had allowed her eyes to be visible most of the time, and the yellow cats-eyes part only becoming visible when she activated the night vision she'd have been better off. Still, I'd probably rate it as her 3rd best comic costume, after the purple dress and the Jim Balent era costume.

Not my favorite cat-costume but way better then the green jumpsuit. Selina was wearing the pirate costume when she face Bats and WW in B&B #131. She does something in that story a good 15 years before the Joker tries it in the infamous Death in the Family story.

The costume looks alright to me, but that might just be because I have some distance to it. If I was born back in the day and that costume popped up in the comics I might be disheartened a bit, as there would be a big chance that this is the costume we are stuck with going forward, and there is no internet to amplify the complaints about the costume.

Now I need a release of the Conan comics dealing with his pirate days and the Queen of the Black Coast storyline where pirate Catwoman replaces Belit as the love of his life. I mean Conan was called the "Lion" in it and Catwoman would be down for that.

Fun fact after the Sean Young debacle and melt down where she was stalking Tim Burton, and showing up on the Joan Rivers Show in a homemade Catwoman costume, she was in talks to make a film about the original Black Cat comic book character. But that never came to fruition.
