In this video I am caulking the deck lines on the Gentleman's racer that I'm building. The deck is made up of 3mm ply with 5mm Sapele planking. This video will fit in-between the one I am currently making on varnishing the boat from start to finish. I hope to have that finished in the next month or so. Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe if you'd like more updates on the project!

Only issue is 5200 is not a caulk it’s an adhesive. Should’ve used a caulk like sikaflex.

These deck lines are really only cosmetic as it is essentially a thick veneer on top of plywood so the lines don't really need to function like a traditional caulked deck.

Does the caulking come in various colours for example if you wanted your cocking in a brown when it is cured is it possible to get it in that shade

Think you’ll regret using 5200 in a couple of years when the seams open up. Useful stuff but too stiff for decks unless you store the boat out of the sun

So what would you recommend
@hughmaxwell8143
@hughmaxwell8143 Год назад
@@michaeldanilov9026 5200 useful for many instances, deck seams not. It dries very stiff and inevitably peels away from one side or the other, most times both. It also yellows horribly. Teak decking systems (TDS as they’re known) makes a uv resistant purpose made deck sealant that is what most of use use if we can given whatever situation. This product contains silicone so it can’t be varnished over. Varnish the deck with 10 coats of your favorite stuff, then mask and caulk the seams neatly with this, smoothing it flush. You’ll be happy.

Do we have to leave gaps between wood on plywood , for the boat deck .. does it do anything with movement of wood that’s why we leave gaps ????
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 4 года назад
Not on plywood really, the deck lines on ply are often painted on just for show. In "proper" planked decks these joints are designed to take up the movement in the wood yes but on my boat it is really about looking traditional with more modern build methods so they don't really serve any function.

Why not caulk the seams before varnishing? Thanks in advance for answering from Germany.
@DanLeeBoatbuilding

In order to stop the caulking bleeding into the wood, its much easier to get a sharp edge if you part varnish first.

Is the caulking purely aesthetic or is there a mechanical/practical reason for caulking?

5200 is great stuff in the right application, this in not one of them.

Did you cut the design on the top with your router ? Or is that more planking on plywood?
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 4 года назад
The deck was planking on plywood as well, same as the sides but the only difference was that I left gaps for the caulking lines.

Is 5200 hard as a rock or is there a little cushion if you press hard? Thank you.
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 4 года назад
It does have a bit of movement. I wanted something harder than a standard caulk for this deck due to the way it is constructed but its not rock hard.

How long do you wait before you remove the masking tape?
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 3 года назад
I take it off as soon as I've finished so when the caulking is still wet.

what would i use on ply joins please
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 2 года назад
You could route in grooves and then fill them with a caulking such as Sikaflex, I have done this before. A lot of people also just paint the calking lines in during the later stages of the varnishing process.
