Been busy scrubbing this old teak deck.
Then caulking to seal the seams.
Soon - some nice product treatment to oil it up and give it that natural wet look and condition the wood for water resistance.
I was paying $27 per tube of Sikaflex 291 but I found it locally for $17 a tube, so that's much better 👍🍻

Update on the caulking. Instead of removing the tape when it was still wet, I peeled it off the next morning. Better results and no mess

Wow Jimmy that’s hard work! It’s beautiful wood. You’ve been very busy getting it sea worthy and water tight. You better be careful your buddy might want that beer!!hehehe. It’s going to be so worth it when done. It just might be the envy of others. The music was very fitting for this video. Have a great week. Stay safe!

Hey Jimmy, this video was really interesting to watch! Love how you explained everything in such detail and in between the sanding, and pulling out the old grout and the washing down with the pail, really interesting to see. Had to laugh..."...uh..3 to 5 yrs", I can imagine though it's a lot of work. I guess there is no easy way to remove the old grout, other than by hand. Great video, the boat is going to look gorgeous when your all done!

Thank you very much Steve, appreciated 👍👍👍. Hopefully I'll have that deck wrapped up by the end of this week and can start enjoying it out there with a deck chair and a cold one or two😁😁🍻🍻

Jimmy! You have more patience than I do. It will look good after it's all done but, you will have to drink a lot of PBR's to get through it, lol. Good luck my friend.

A lot of work with tape but for sure good way....on my sailing boat i just did the mess then sanded it with 80 grid, then teak oil...like you said it takes away some teak and i would not do it more then once. My hopes are in fact that caulking materials are way better nowadays and wont have to do it again any time soon :)

@@JimmyMeatwhistle great boat mate! I’m a bit jealous that you can work on yours and live on it in same time, I live in alberta and have my huge ass blue water boat parked on my driveway while working on it….looks funny, sitting on trailer (38ft boat) it’s taller then house and I look like Noah preparing for flood 😆

I don't know much. About boats my question is. If you're pulling the cotton out and not replacing the cotton before you calking it won't that be worse? My understanding of the cotton is from Samsung boat company that the cotton helps to. Stop the calk From pushing through to make a better seal. And when the cotton gets wet, it holds moisture so. The teek can swell to close the gap.

Hell of a Job, do you seal the wood with some kind of clear after all?...makes me think, grind wood, seal it with oil, remove the trench material and lay in a new thread cotton, then use thinner tar like caulking which you can pour and spread with squeegee so it flows down, soacks the cord and dries slowly , later after 2 / 3 runs and hardening ( remains flexi) Take a ( Rotary electric) floor mob and remove access from the top, the oiled planks would have little adhesion only ...once dry and clean use a Deck Paint and once this hardened use Zep liquid floor polish all this in squeegee operation, that would easy up things and provides Tons of curing time where one can fish, play with the seal or simply drink a couple of tummy enhancers😄😃😂

Thanks buddy 👍. No sanding the deck for me and no top coatings. I might oil it, but nothing else 😁

You have an amazing rough & tumble work ethic Sir...Impressive. All that working with your poor bandaged & banged up hand 🤕..be sure to take some breaks & take care of urself. The teak is gorgeous...the seal was so exciting for an east coast gal...u seemed like someone who gets to see them often...beautiful creatures...eyes so gentle and friendly looking up at you...thanks for sharing that little guy 🦭...My compliments on your editing, music selection, and the sunset at the docks was a great ending to video 🌇.

Thank you! Much appreciated. Yeah the teak is something else, the whole boat is absolutely awesome. I'll take you through the inside soonish, it's looking really good and the bedroom is almost done 👍😁. The only thing this floating cabin of mine is missing, is a wood burning stove but I think I might fix that in the fall if it's still floating 🤔👍

@@JimmyMeatwhistle Well I was super impressed with your work in the kitchen so I very much look forward to seeing the changes in the bedroom... I think the last time you showed it you had cut a mattress to fit LOL so I'm sure whatever you've done will impress me and everyone else follows you. Is a woodstove a posssibility? Where would u place it?? I love being able to watch a fire; but, the insurance agent in me is thinking "OMG how can that work safely?"Would love to see u make that work 🔥🔥👍
@JimmyMeatwhistle
@JimmyMeatwhistle 2 года назад
Hi Kimberly and thanks for the awesome comment 😁. I've been thinking wood stove as well. And wood is the best way to heat these old boats. Propane and/or diesel heaters let off a ton of condensation so I would love to put a little wood burning stove in here. I've also found a great spot to vent it without damaging the boat. It would go in place of the old propane stove and would vent where the stove overhead fan vents. It would be perfect! More to come on that for sure!

@@JimmyMeatwhistle Dang u are definitely a jack of ALL trades. Putting a woodstove where galley stove is, and venting straight up from there...Genius Sir 👍👍 Is the galley done soon?? I'm excited to see how magically u were able to make those seat cushions look like new. Wow ..you have put A LOT of labor in already... 💪 during the "Scrubbing The Deck" montage ur arm muscles were impressive...but when u said it would take 3-5 years I was thinking "Jimmy will get it ALL restored within a yr & be safely sailing by summer 2023!! 🤗
@JimmyMeatwhistle
@JimmyMeatwhistle 2 года назад
Haha, thanks! It's from all that manual labor that I do 😁. The back deck should be done this week and I'll get the sides and bow of the boat done within the next two weeks for sure. I'll get the bedroom video up it's almost ready to go and the kitchens also looking pretty darn good so that'll be coming up right after. Thanks again for the awesome comments, appreciated! 🍻👍😁

Holy back breaker Meatwhistle! So what is the plan for the loose or missing screws and damaged or missing teak plugs? You need like 6 more people and make a day out of it. Then a big dinner and campfire chill session afterwards. Is there a router out there made specifically for these kinds of decks? Some kind of jig to make it precise. Then you could control the depth for the fake cracks too. Also, would it be a good idea to get new string and put it in first then put in the new caulk? Very interesting and tedious job to me no matter what?
@JimmyMeatwhistle
@JimmyMeatwhistle 2 года назад
So far no missing screws. The teak plugs I can put in. I have some teak and you can buy plug cutters specifically for this job. It actually cuts the teak plug at a taper so you can pound them in. It's pretty cool. I'm not missing many plugs, maybe 20 or 30 overall out of the thousands that are in this thing. Most of the string caulking I kept in, a few places are missing and actually too tight to put anything in LOL. Overall it's pretty good. I'll scrape out those aesthetic caulking grooves another day. Like next year 😁👌👍

The teak may have been sanded , but my guess is that it has been cleaned with teak-cleaner . It’s an acid that eats away the softer wood leaving a ridge in the teak . Not recommend .
