Hello Alex, I am Esselen. Thank you for sharing this video. It breaks my heart to see that people have vandalized this sacred place. My time here will be used to protect this gift of my ancestors.
Much Thanks Alex, Gary & Family! I lived in Monterey for many years and never learned of those amazing Outcrops! Seeing Why,.... Sadly, damaged by some who can't even grasp the importance of this History! Great Works Guys and Gal!🤠🌄
Absolutely wonderful, as are all of your videos. And thank you for making them with such sincerity and love! It is interesting to rethink the origins and history of the Esselen people in the light of the now widely accepted Younger Dryas Impact theory.
Thanks again and much. There are remains such as this all over the world 🌎 which makes me think they were connected, at least through communication, art, etc.😊
The majority of physical evidence of the earliest human inhabitants of North and South America is under the ocean, as the coastline of that era was over 200 feet lower than today. We'll never know how many archaeological sites are swamped below the sea, but it's safe to assume that the majority from that era are lost to the sea.
I just found the TREASURE of your videos. Thank you for taking this journey for us. I am Iroquois from Cayuga Lake, NY. I appreciate your reverence for the Ancient Ones.
living in Southern California and exploring the history is amazing, I have seen hieroglyphs off the sunrise highway, sat under the oaks on Palomar mountain where the ancients used to dwell and found a huge foot in the Cleveland national forest....there is even a cave off Hwy 395 near Lawrence Welk Resort with the HANDS carved on the rock...
I love Palamor camping there and being able to hear the birds made me fall in love with nature and everything that comes with it now I’m learning this native history that is my culture I’m thankful for those birds
All, Alex's "oh my goodness's" (heck, I would be saying the same) are nothing compared to seeing the modern scratched graffiti put there by ignorant people (could use worse words) who do not respect such places as these. Anyhow thank you very much for bringing to us this great video...peace.
Your welcome Alex, and don't worry about saying "oh my goodness", if people don't like it they don't have to watch your videos. I always say "oh my word" when I get excited. We can't please everyone....
The semitic letter "kaph" is a picture of a cupped hand that formed our English letter "k"! The up and down line is a symbol of the side of Adam, while the folded cup part of the hand is the hand of God taking the rib from Adam to form Eve!
From a poet of the California coast: HANDS by Robinson Jeffers Inside a cave in a narrow canyon near Tassajara The vault of rock is painted with hands, A multitude of hands in the twilight, a cloud of men's palms, no more, No other picture. There's no one to say Whether the brown shy quiet people who are dead intended Religion or magic, or made their tracings In the idleness of art; but over the division of years these careful Signs-manual are now like a sealed message Saying: 'Look: we also were human; we had hands, not paws. All hail You people with the cleverer hands, our supplanters In the beautiful country; enjoy her a season, her beauty, and come down And be supplanted; for you also are human.
....."a little too abstract, a little too wise. it is time to touch the earth, again." (Robinson Jeffers)..... my aunt lived a block up from Tor House...... i'm called "homeless", but i used to sleep for decades up in Dwight Way canyon, etc. in Berkeley. at NIGHT, i'd hike up the Derby Fire Trail into Tilden Park and out to Inspiration Point. winter hikes at night were great!
That area should be a legally protected historical site. Unless I missed something. Strangers have desecrated and vandalized it already as seen in the video. The graffiti are not to supposed to be there. Esselen Native American people still have descendants today in 2020. Their ancestors were here over 10,000 years ago. This is their sacred place, and it should never be vandalized again.
Thanks for watching and your comments. Unfortunately, ignorance is the root cause of vandalism in these ancient sites and it seems to be a worldwide phenomenon. My sensing is that education is a key element to garner respect for all ancient locations.......................alex
Great show and love your work, curiosity and goals. I live in Red Bluff almost to the Oregon border and I am very interested in Native American settlements in my area. Could U recommend a colleague who has done work similar to yours up my way? Maybe something I could watch online?
beautiful area, i used to live in big sur and carmel, spent lots of time on that coast, magical and powerful indeed. curse the missions and their false god, destroying the cultures of the true Earth peoples of the Creator. what a shame. thanks for taking us along....
i dont believe Christ is a false god and i do believe in the great commission and spreading his word , what i dont understand is why they thought they had to cange people's culture and way of life for this to happen .
@Norwindian bullshit. god did not write that book, control freaks did. the god of that book is so petty it beggars belief, jealous, angry, vengeful, it's an obvious control mechanism to disempower human beings. cheers!
Hey Alex, is there any way to visit this site? I’m local to the area and would love to see it. I don’t want to disrespect the area or site in any way so I’m curious what your thoughts are. Thanks
I can trace my family tree back to the 1770s and my grandmother of that era was from the Los Verjenes reservation who married a Spanish soldier. I won't put their names here though. My cousin Linda Yamane has studied our ancestry and is able to speak some of the language. There's a video of her talking about that here on RU-vid
Kim, thanks for watching.... I have watched several youtube videos of Linda describing the baskets she makes and some of the songs she learned. Great stuff.........alex
I was struck, looking at the "hands" that they were unusual, yet there was something familiar about them. It struck me yesterday what it was. Bear scratch marks, how grizzlies mark territory. Like someone making grizzley-oriented markings, not just handprints. There are grizzley-marked rocks on Grizzley Peak outside Felton, and I've seen similar marks on trees in Yellowstone. Could this have been the meeting place of a group who were a Grizzley Bear totem, or California grizzley cult?
Jane, thanks for watching, your observation, and comments. Unfortunately, the true history and meaning of the symbols in the Cave of the Hands has been lost in time. Today, much is left to speculation...........alex
at time stamp 21:21 ,what looks like a line of people ,i think is just one person showing the movements in a ritual dance. like a flip book cartoon, only , on the wall.
If this were anywhere else than North America I'd say this is about sixty to forty-five thousand years old and was done after a forest fire or similar disaster counting survivors grouped by extended families. This is fascinating.
Wonderful video. I can't help but think that the hands are palm towards you, not away from you. That would explain the left hand being on the right side.
Hi Alex, enjoyed this cave of the hands.... The black strokes could be Aboriginal people. I watched a video on First Americans where Black Aboriginals... Since I am Australian this interested me greatly....

BTW, horses and camels managed to cross over to Asia several times during their evolution and apparently did not need such land bridge. I am also rather sure that the Denisovan, Neanderthal, and modern humans that populated Australia about forty thousand years ago did not walk from Africa through Europe to Asia and then to Australia. I strongly suspect they had boats.
Union ceremony? Man and woman standing shoulder to shoulder. The hands closest to each other were painted next to each other as if they placed their hands next to each other on the wall.
@RāMBō ...many cultures have a corrupted account of the flood! Google, Paleo-Chinese Word Picture, "Big Boat" by Aquilla Fleetwood, youtube! There WAS a flood...
I am more inclined to think those are depictions of a storm from the heavens with asteroids with may fingers ad trails and sprites of electrical discharging.
Hmmmm...maybe the hand cave was where woman would go to give birth....a safe birthing room! The uterus shaped carving with the unborn fetus with in it and the hands appearing to go up above.......✋🖐🖖👋🤚🤲👐🙌👶👶👶👶👶👶👨👩👧👧 family! Life! Just a thought!👣
I’d like to believe it, except to relics and artifacts as well as effigies or figurines and paint in temple ruins do not point to this land bridge. This music is different too.
Very interesting subject matter. Speakers are knowledgeable and professional. Production values are extremely amateur. Please consult a professional cinematographer.
Alex.....Wasn't my intention to insult cause I like watching your journeys, but being the rugged nature of your walks and journeys the narrations to include the many many" Oh My Goodness's" sort of cancels out the nature of your programs. I can only gather that your a good Christian, and I enjoy watching, but beef it up some, which is to say....leave out the Oh My Goodness. I have you on my favorite. jack
Why do you speak of my people like they are gone? We are alive and well and sorry to inform you but your way off on your interpretation of those symbols. May you find peace within.
Al, unfortunately many people confuse the title of the series to mean that Native Americans are not longer with us. Native American and Esselen people live and many prosper amongst us today and that is why Richard appears in this film. He explains his ancestry. My interpretation of one panel is very speculative and as you say is "way off". I appreciate your input and perhaps you can share with us your knowledge of the Cave Of The Hands.
@@storiesbyalex we are specifically instructed not to share our knowlegde in thus mannor if you were true as to who you say you are you would understand.
Generally do not like "white" people investigating ancient California Native Peoples. To much "cultural" baggage involved, like having drum and southwest flute music to accompany all the videos. California Native Peoples did not use skin head drums and only used flutes for the very personal use of courting. That said, modern Native Peoples cannot KNOW what is sacred or not because they have not lived in the environment that their ancestors lived. This is not a negative statement but only one of authentic perspective. If you live naked with the environment and obtain all of your sustinence from it, then yes please state what it is your truly think and belive and feel, but being an authentic person you would not because it would be to personal to you.
