Wow! Nicely done my friend!! The one thing as a crafter youtuber I'm sure you encounter is how to make something unique. There's no shortage of dungeon tiles out there (BMC, DMs Craft, DMGinfo, Wyloch, just to name the biggies). What you've done here is definitely taken it to the NEXT level. I love it. I made a bunch of "cavern" tiles (slightly different than tiled dungeon tiles) via BMC and I love them, but I do really like the wall aspect of your build here! I know walls can be topics of contention for some crafters (it does have the problem of sometimes limiting sightlines), but sometimes you just need to get your players up out of their chairs! :D Awesome build! Really, really looking forward to the next three in this series!
@TabletopWitchCRAFT
@TabletopWitchCRAFT 3 года назад
Thank you Perry ! Another cool aspect of these tiles is that if you want to have the walls you can just place one on there without adding to it in height and your players can see their mini's from around the table. The height of one wall isn't that limiting!

Thank you Larissa. I would recommend making these tiles... I get a TON of use of out them. That being said you could lay your entire labyrinth out on the table and cover it in cardboard and only reveal sections as they move through! Maybe even letter sized paper over the labyrinth to make it easier to remove small sections. Good luck :)

I’ve been binging your content for the past few days and was thinking that the only thing missing with magnets was a modular tile system and low and behold here it is! Never played on anything like this (or made it for that matter) but does it slide around or does it keep together well? My pet peeve is misaligned tiles XD would putting in magnets in the side of the tiles be to much or maybe interfere with the magnets in the wall? Just wondering. Amazing work, amazing channel. Hi Lynn, I discussed this briefly in the video. I don't think that the strength is there if you don't use two magnets to keep them together by using a washer or screw.... add that second magnet and you can place it outside in a windstorm :) These magnets really are cheap but super strong. Honestly, between the stage-method which Dungeon Craft does, and what you've just done, I think I have an idea how I want to do my own... If I can ever have the time and resources to do it. For the sake of additional verticality and visibility, I think half-height walls work well when in a dungeon, etc, with ways to cover up areas dungeon-fog style with arches and sheets of black paper between what they can see and not see... And then also have the half-height walls be able to work as additional height layers, steps, or flip them over for a different style altogether. In addition, with more open areas, the verticality and larger pieces put together work well as a stage without obscuring things, but even more layers might make it easier to have a single snap-in point between two magnets or post-points which can hold clear platforms for where PCs, NPCs, and monsters are climbing, etc.

Do you find yourself having issues with fumes/toxic output from burning the foam? (sorry if a noob question :))
@TabletopWitchCRAFT
@TabletopWitchCRAFT 2 месяца назад
It's a great question. Being a big health and fitness enthusiast I set out on a journey 4 years ago to get the answers to the age old question.... Are the fumes toxic from working with foam. I checked with the manufacture, distributor, even colleges that studied the fumes for spec data for these companies... NOBODY could give me a definitive answer if they were safe... So long story short... are the fumes made of oxygen... no... So I don't want to breathe them in :) I cut all my foam under a large hood that vents directly out of my studio.

The foam that I use has a plastic sheet on the surface that must be removed before you use it. Simply peels off. Love these. You're right. The secret is really with making the walls modular.. what size magnets are you using. I have a tough time with magnets. Not only due to polarity but how small they are and being fiddley i my finger tips. You made it look a lot easier than they can be.
@TabletopWitchCRAFT
@TabletopWitchCRAFT 3 года назад
Thank you jimeronimo. The exact magnets can be found in the video description via the Amazon links. As far as polarity, use one craft "in this case a tile" as your standard go to, to check polarity. That way all your tiles will be interchangable.
@jimeronimo
@jimeronimo 3 года назад
@@TabletopWitchCRAFT I saw you doing that with the magnet but when I go to pick them up with my fingers it's easy for them to come out of my grasp or flip the wrong way. Drives me nuts.. lol. That size might be a whole lot easier.. thanks.. Jim

Hi John Is there a particular reason why all of the vertical tiles are the same height? Also, is there a reason why you measure your cuts before forming the vertical tiles, instead of just eye-balling it? I think my subconscious is working on this amazing system!! 🙏💪🏻
@TabletopWitchCRAFT

Great questions. I made all the walls the same height because if you want variation you can just stack more on top. I suppose you could vary them though! As for the vertical tiles are you referring to the actual shape? If so that was done to keep them roughly fitting on a 1” grid.

You can magnetize the sides of the floor tiles if you split them into two piles (one for each axis of the grid) and use different polarities for each pile. Make your life simple with a tester also. Hot glue a magnet (polarity doesn't matter) to a thin strip of chipboard so you can verify the polarity of the side magnets. When finished, the floor tiles should magnetize together also.
@TabletopWitchCRAFT
@TabletopWitchCRAFT 3 года назад
Yeah, you can definitely do that. Now you know I love magnets, but I'm just trying to simplify things so you don't have to have stack "a" and stack "b" of tiles... Cool idea though.

The tip of the longer wire 'knife' is always cooler than the shorter one, but you could have used the length of the long one to do most of each line with one press! They're really designed for cutting using the side of the wire. The shorter ones definitely work better for carving details. A variable temperature soldering iron with a fine tip would work, but use an old tip you don't love. The biggest issue I have with my Thermocut is the less then 6" cutting height, so you couldn't use it to slice thicker foam down (I usually work with 20mm foam, which is thick enough for two tiles. So I built another one with a 12" clearance!

@@TabletopWitchCRAFT They're pretty simple to build. I built this while I was waiting for my Proxon, so it has a largeish table and plenty of space between the wire and the frame for larger pieces.

Looks awesome and usefull in homegames. A problem i find is tha you need a one inch gap between rooms and modules usually don’t have this. So you need to modify the whole dungeon.

Very multi-useful!!! There are so many cavern applications in DnD for modular cave tiles, but LMoP "Wave Echo Cave" and the Underdark came immediately to mind. Wave Echo Cave is huge in scale and this could break it down into multiple, individual session adventures! Great build!!!

I've held off making any dungeon terrain, as I just started with the hobby and realized I really enjoy making buildings -- but this is the first dungeon/cave system I've seen that makes me actually want to make some! Thank you! I don't have a hotwire or hotwire table, but I think this may be a good enough excuse for a christmas present to myself. I'm not sure I totally understood the magnet part, but I imagine I'll figure it out once I start building. Thanks again for the idea!

I apologize if you've answered this already but, at 17:25 when you list the total number of tiles & most specifically the walls - when you refer to the inches are you referring to their height or how wide they are? For example, I'm assuming the 1" Walls are 1" wide X 6" Long. But, my ultimate question is how tall are each of those? Amazing channel btw - I'm just getting into the hobby of crafting terrain for my players and I love your videos.
@TabletopWitchCRAFT

Amazing video! I may even feel I inspired enough to get back into crafting. Thank you! Not to step on your dick, I know you get a kickback on the Amazon links. But anyone who is struggling with money can get XPS foam in larger quantities much cheaper at home improvement stores. Especially if you dig through and find large sheets that have been damaged. Point out the damage upon checkout and the cashier will more than likely give you a discount.

Made these the other day and loved how they turned out. Question tho, do you have any recommendations on how to cut the thicker foam into more manageable size? The hot foam cutter was awkward to use to remove it from the whole.

@TabletopWitchCRAFT 2 года назад
Awesome, I'm glad you like them... They are one of my most used crafts. Yeah pick up a large framing square and an OLFA knife to knock down the foam into more manageable pieces. I only use the Proxxon for small detailed cuts.
