yup, i would have in warm dry weather for sure, but not with ice water flowing over me... but then, i would have just found a way to lower his arse when i realized getting him up wasnt going to work, with the logic that, if water flows down there, it has to come out someplace.. worst case. we lower stuff to warm the fool up and feed the idiot and find a way to get them out from there.. this was human stupidity on display for all to see.. caves can be safe, or dangerous, some are just dangerous period, others.. well.. i got a buddy who was in a cave during an earthquake.. when they got outside.. the nearby city was heavily damaged... they had only seen small rocks fall during the shaking inside... (hard rock cave that had also been mined in some areas) i dont go into caves that are sketchy.. fuck that.. but i know a few up in my part of the country that are quite safe and, wonderful during hot summer days... old lava tubes... coming off mt adams.... also know a few up there great to swim in.... as in you are swimming in the mouth of long vertical shaft that a stream falls into and runs out of.. ;)

to a degree, alot of it is people who have no real experience and, well.. bad shit happens. i have been in many caves and the sketchiest shit that ever happened was one jackass jumping into water without a clue how deep it was.. i mean it was def gonna be deep enough to not get hurt from the jump but.... still... fuck sake... this situation, i wouldnt have gone into a stream of cold water, but if i was at the top, rather then try and pull his arse up.. i would lower his arse and hope he at least could get out of the stream of water, i kept wondering why they didnt just lower him knowing shit was fucked either way. anyway, i know people on my states rescue teams and, they say over 90% (from actual stats) of people they have had to rescue have been those with fuck all exp, didnt take anybody with exp with them, and went into caves or mines and got in trouble... more then once they went to rescue cavers whos families got worried only to find that.. everybody is fine and infact had found another entrance/exit to the caves/mines, and just lost track of time... it can happen... ask anybody whos been underground for an extended period.... keeping track of time becomes a "glad i have a watch" situation... as i have told anybody i knew who wanted to check out some caves, stick to safe ones, and go with somebody whos got genuine experience... and what use to be considered common sense... because, like mushroom picking, if you go with an idiot, you could very well endup dead... the worst rescue my friends have been on was actually a mixed team that was a govt project that took down some experienced people but alot of people who had never been underground more then the "ape caves" type stuff.. and yeah.. no deaths but a couple very close calls and alot of injuries, when you see that a cave was also used as a mine, do not touch the support wood, not till you got an experienced person looking the area over and giving the go-ahead... because fuck sake... a logging and mining operation actually got the team in with one of their lift copters, 2 cargo containers with equipment and people inside dropped almost ontop of the cave.. took them 3 days to get them all out... didnt make the news, but most dont, specially when nobody dies.. basic rules of going underground are not to go alone, not to go without people knowing where you will be and are going, always pay attention, even in safe tourist friendly caves.... you never know when somebody else may do or have done something stupid, i could list a bunch honestly but... personally i have heard far more stories about shit like this where, it was a bunch of idiots fucking up... honestly had they just lowered him... if anybody heard about this it would be a cautionary tale rather the tragic... this was human stupidity... and i have seen the same results from idiots doing things in civilization sadly.. we once found a body of somebody who vanished 2 months earlier..everybody even his fam thought he had just gone back to the home country without telling anybody...naa the fool climbed into an old funnel thing used to fill freight cars back in the 50s-70's, trying to open it up apparently.. couldnt get back out and was in crotch deep water that he had broken threw the layer of ice on.. nobody has any idea why he was in there trying to dump the water out.. but.. yeah.. we were told to move the yard engine around and get things setup so that equipment could be used for the first time in close to a decade and.. we found a still mostly frozen corps... he had to have done this at the end of the shift or people would have heard him trying to get help... also saw a foolish woman nearly die after trying to 'fix' something, falling into a funnel chute used for disposing of trash in a highrise rebuild, that had icey water flowing off the roof into it(part of why we had it setup was because it kept the water flowing outside not into the elevator shaft and basement that we had already had to pump out twice..)... she got VERY lucky somebody outside saw her lump clog the chute and they got her out and out of the icewater filled cloths.... she was moved to working at the office they didnt trust she wouldnt get herself or others hurt/killed after that one..

I can't believe I was dumb enough to go into a cave once, when I was a kid- almost died, and you'll never get me back in another one. I was about 20 I think- young enough to still be stupid, old enough to not have anyone to stop you- very dangerous time in most young men's lives. Anyway- long story short- and it is a long story, so forgive me if it seems a bit disjointed because I'm not typing it all out because no one will read it if I do. We stopped on the way to get flashlights at Walmart- bought a pack of like 5 or something for 15 bucks, I think. When someone said "cave" I thought it would be like some little nothing- I didn't think we even had real caves around here- we do. So, we get there, go in- it's nuts man, this is a real, no joke cave- and the way through it is not easy to see, there are little holes and tunnels and stuff running everywhere- you really have to look around to see the way through to the next chamber. And at one point you have to get on your belly and crawl through water several inches deep. So we make it all the way to the point where there's this big underground waterfall- which is the objective- we check it out- turn around to leave. And one by one- each one of the cheapo Walmart lights we bought- died. We didn't make it far on the way out and we were completely out of anything but a cigarette lighter- and like I said before- this is not an easy place to find your way around in- and if you go down the wrong tunnel or crack- no idea where you'll end up. It took a few minutes for the real terror to start setting in- we started arguing, ppl were scared, I was scared- to death. We thought maybe we could make it back to the belly crawl with the lighter but, we knew we couldn't do the crawl with it- no way you could keep a lighter lit while crawling through that water. Besides, I was pretty sure we wouldn't even get back to that point- that we would get lost before we ever got there. If you knew your way, maybe you could use a lighter- but we didn't know our way and the lighter wasn't going to last long either- they never do when you try to use them as a torch like that. Plus, we could've easily walked into a pocket of methane- it's very possible in caves in this area. So, we're arguing about what to do and I'm starting to really panic and thank God- that's when I see a light coming. Someone else had come in to see the waterfall- a church group. I have never been so happy and relieved to see a light in my entire life. We had to sit there and wait for them to go to the end, see the waterfall, and come back- but they did, and we walked out with them. I remember sitting there waiting for them and thinking "What if something happens to them?" But it didn't, and I've never been happier to see the sky- you will never get me in a cave again- never. Yes- I realize we could've bought better lights, been more prepared- but I choose the easier solution- just don't go back. Wasn't anything in there but rocks, darkness, and fear- I aint going back.

It would probably help you understand if you stopped trying to apply your lucid logic of a stable mind to these thrill seekers. It's not about visiting locations, it's about flirting with danger and despair. They call it the "death wish" because to the average person with standard brain chemistry, observing the behavior from the outside, flirting with death and wanting to die are one and the same. We feel compelled to explain it by stupidity (hey, at least you didn't), but in doing so fail to appreciate its complexity and don't stop to think what we could learn about the human nature if instead we'd make an earnest attempt to assign meaning to such deviant behavior. They might have overexpression in genes that would have contributed to being a great explorer, a warrior, or that one guy who made it through a major crisis in a tightly-knit local community with his chin up, and carried everyone forward. Now there is no communality, everywhere is explored and charted out, they mostly live in environments where real immediate danger doesn't exist or is easily avoided, and they end up as a joke on the Internet instead.

An old article says the one girl was calling it cave of death because on a prior trip somebody almost passed out and started mild hypothermia afterwards. What I found interesting is snowmelt in summer Utah dropping rivers to 47, and people jumping in from hot air temps, going into cold water shock instantly and not resurfacing. Thank you for not saying "Prava, Utah". Edits follow. Thanks also for explaining and diagramming that the passage was a 15 foot underwater swim. The two hypotheses about what happened are very clarifying. I watched a slightly earlier video that did not explain half of what this video explained. Swimming 15 feet underwater is not hard, but the difficulty is no doubt increased by restricted movement in a flooded cave. The trick is strict conservation of energy - you get some ridiculous records like 185 feet swum underwater (no fins), and record breath holds of 25 minutes (twenty-five minutes), but for normal folks ... it's not hard to see how 15 feet in a cave could be "unsuccessful", especially when you run into a dead friend blocking the exit. I had to crawl the whole length of the place and it was....not cool.... my coworker was up above waiting for me to drag a network cable over to a hole and shove it up to him.... the entire kitchen staff randomly converged on his position.... and right then...in frustration...I yelled "I hate caves!".... which ...echoed from below and startled a dozen humans.... lol. That’s not actually true. There’s only been 2 cave diving deaths in the last 50 years that were not due to a rule being broken. I’ve never heard of a caver dying who was following the rules, but I’m sure it’s happened a few times as well. All these stories are about fools without training or deliberately thinking they were above the guidelines that were created by the people who invented the sport. Most of us cavers are engineers, doctors and programmers. We tend to be rather quiet folk though, and many of the caving community isn’t on social media. I guess they don’t care how we are viewed, but I think it’s a shame so few people give it a try. So many caves are easy and safe. Obviously though the difficulty of each cave can vary drastically, so it’s important to stay within one’s limits. It’s a slow progression. My first couple caves were huge ones, no small spaces or anything. Not much wildlife besides the occasional cave cricket. It was a 4 mile walk it was really casual and easy. I guess the most risky thing would be falling and twisting an ankle or getting your ankle stuck and snapping a bone. It would be sort of a pain in the ass to carry an injured caver through the cave. Vertical caves obviously are a bit more tricky. I am not experienced enough to attempt a vertical cave but I have been attending training sessions and am signed up for some upcoming rope/cave courses that are taught by the fire station. And when I do finally go, I go with my local grotto so we usually have at least 8 people on every trip and usually a few of them are part of the search and rescue unit in our town. Same people that save dogs from wells and cats from trees. I am joining next year myself. Anyway, for anyone that got this far, go check out your local grotto! Just don’t be an idiot, and use common sense, and you’ll be fine.

Ok can someone answer this question for me. Who tf in their right mind would first go into the cave find a flooded tunnel and say to themselves “lemme swim in this and see if it goes anywhere while having no visibility to find the hidden room.” Then say ya lemme install a rope for people. Like who sees the water and says ya diving into unknown water is an ideal scenario for me. (Talking about the first ever person to find the second tunnel) (in the first story)
@khecht908
@khecht908 Год назад
I had this same question. How did the first person decide to dive in to a narrow water filled tunnel with no knowledge of where it ended or ability to turn around? Or maybe it was dry part of the time, and so they knew where it went, and then put up the rope later for when it did flood? Although that still sounds kinda insane, because how would anyone know whether the air was bad on the other side or not once it did flood? There's clearly something I'm just not getting here.

I recall being sick to my stomach when I first heard about the incident in the news. It was really tragic and I couldn't help but read about it many times over the years since it occurred. I haven't been through all of your videos yet, but I have a *VIDEO SUGGESTION* if you haven't already discussed it- *Nutty Putty Cave* (also not all that far from me in Utah). My friends went there all the time to hang out in one of the open spaces when we were in our teens & 20's. It was really popular amongst a great variety of people. Besides Boy Scouts, there were other therapeutic groups who utilized the cave and the experience as well as people who just wanted to "party" without LE or whomever to bother them. I was invited often, but honestly caves freak me out & especially after hearing about the Cave Of Death, and I'm really claustrophobic. It was essentially my idea of a personal Hell.. It's HORRIBLE what happened to the young man. I can't even begin to imagine what he was thinking and feeling as well as the feelings of those who ventured with him. It was unfortunate Nutty Putty Cave closed bc it was almost a rite of passage for many in the area to visit, but it's also understandable given the circumstances. It's just mind boggling in a way, knowing how many people of varying ages and sizes have been in and out of that area. I suppose part of the thrill is not knowing what you're going to approach next and deciding how you're going to navigate any obstacles.... Thanks for the content! I wish for safety to any and all adventurers/ spelunkers out there. 🕊🤍 R.I.P. I (we) did that many times an was fun. Luckely an accident was spared but it was really dangerous. Now I never ever would try that again if the bunker still excist. Most of the war bunkers are now demolished. Another recent horror storie happened to one of my colleagues who was a researcher inside caves. He went there with a team but when they were inside a flood suddenly appeared. My colleague couldn't escape and drowned. He and the group were experienced cavers. I would recommended every rookie not to go caving without a guide. I will never ever go into small places anymore. Thanks for this story.. It shook some memories of my own.
